mamma's don't let your babies grow up Is this any way to run a rodeo? Alright, Miz Huffman, hand over them pencils. to be cowboys. by Jeanne Statts Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be cowboys. The fearless cowboys who will be competing at Hoover on May 12 and 13 obviously did not heed this warn- ing popularized by Waylon Jennings. They happily risk their necks on bucking broncos with names like Widow Maker and Nut Cracker . They completely ignore the constant threat of serious physical injury for the thrill of victory , not to mention the purse donated by the local merchants. They thrive on the knowledge that every crowd breathes tension to be broken in seconds by the agony of defeat - as in one celebrated spill where a horse kicked its rider in the face while the hapless victim, suspended from one stirrup, was dragged through the rancid mud of the rodeo ring. There is also the kind of genuine pride a man reflects while enduring with grace on a beast gone mad. These thrills are not only for the adult male. The Girls Rodeo Associa- tion was formed with the feminist vigor that typifies our modern culture. The Intercollegiate Rodeo Association gives college students the chance to compete and gain realistic experience. In this organization, the pressures of professionalism are eliminated, while its members also have the added bonus of college enthusiasm and spirit. Even the lit- tle people can get an early taste of competition in the Little Britches League. There are several other interesting aspects of rodeo. For instance, picture the wild bucking broncos in their prime, as they hurl courageous and carefree cowboys through the air. The rodeo clowns add a dash of color while keeping the audience entertained be- tween acts and during the awkward times after the inevitable accidents. Nik, Lf-r Ri 'if-V:- '4' N I lg .
