Students Succeed n S eeial l mpies by Amy Werner In this day and age, more and more Americans are emphasizing the need for a special time when students of the same levels and age groups can get together and participate in competitive as well as social activities. That's what the Special Olympics are all about. The Special Olympics for our region were held on April 30 at Oaks Field in South Charleston. Many students from the Charleston area participated in the Special Olympics including 15 Hoover students. All of these students were on hand at the Olympics from 8:30 to 2:30 p.m. to participate in various athletics such as the 50 meter dash, the standing broad jump, the high jump, the frisbee throw and the softball throw. Hoover students participating in the Special Olympics were: Keith Wilmoth, Sharon Rhodes, Denise Olive, Nora Shaffer, Gary Hodges, Robert Blackwell, Greg Swiney, Lela Stricklen, Clinton Mul- lins, Tim Murdock, James Johnson, Rodney Patton, Charles Newhouse, Billy Weikle, and Jeff Shafer. Six Hoover participants were awarded gold medals for their achieve- ments. They were Lela Stricklen, softball throw, Robert Blackwell, long jump, Billy Weikleg 50 meter dash, Charles Newhouseg frisbee throw, Keith Wilmoth, frisbee throw and Rodney Patton, softball throw. Second place winners were: Gary Hodgesg softball throw, Keith Wilmoth, long jump, Nora Shaffer and Lela Stricklen, frisbee throw, and Robert Blackwell, 50 meter dash. Third place winners were: Sharon Rhodes, frisbee throw, and Robert Blackwell, softball throw. James Johnson won fourth place in the 50 meter dash. All of the students who took a part in the Special Olympics should be recognized and honored for their fine showing. Each student should feel a sense of pride in achieving the goals they set for themselves in the Special Olympics. Special Olympics contestants are from left: Keith Wilmoth, Robert Blackwell, Nora Shaffer, James Johnson, Rod Patton, Charles Newhouse, Sharon Rhodes.
