Jo nson s essage GNCE a man working in a chain factory broke the monotony of his labor by giving each link a name as he joined it with the others. Often he would use the names of his fellow workers., One day his companion, JOe,' was not atihis work and our chain worker was unable to include his name. Completing one of the short but sturdy chains, he threw it upon thelbench and remarked, That chain will be no good. I had to leave Joe out of it.'l I . P I I-lad you ever thought of making a chain by which to live? What arethe links that you will have to leave out and which ones wilI,it be necessaryfor you to include to make a chain of strength? Are you able to weigh values and select the best things for your chain of life? Would youadd one small link labeled Neglect of Duty , one link ','Aiselfish act , one named '.'UnreIiable ? You could not include i RebeIIion . These would weaken your chain, while very many such links would render it entirely useless and would endanger the life which hangs upon it. , I believe that you would keep adding virtues, new ac- complishments, more and more links of patience, honest -en- deavor, acts of good sportsmanship, days of unselfish service to others until you are ,at last able to clamp on the links of success and happiness. I s As I think over the short interviews that I have had with each of the members of the graduating classes of I936, I feel as one who has tried to get a knowledge of a good book by reading a review. Much of the best is not knowngand many of the valuable thoughts of the author are lost and the book cannot be truly enjoyed. But in the months and years that have passed I have seen each one of you as a part of the group and I have become increasingly aware of your abilities in one way or another so that along with my regret at losing you as a member of I-Ierbert I-Ioover I-Iigh School I have great and well founded hopes for your future success in Iifei Floyd A. Qrchestra -l-HERE has been real har- mony at Hoover High this year, and a large part ot the credit tor this happy condition righttully goes to the torty-tive members ot the Hoover orchestra under the able direction ot Mr. Frank Close. While this year the orchestra's activities have been to some extent removed from the school and the class rooms, every opportunity tor musical training and experience has been given to all ot our students who soughtand persevered. The Exposition Junior Symphony, which is taking such a prominent part in matters musical at our Exposition, owes its successtul participation largely to our own organization and-to our director. That San Diego may soon have a year-round Junior Symphony orchestra is the hope ot our director, Mr. Close, and ot our organization. Our orchestra enjoyed a prominent part at the mid-term Commence- ment and at the annual Open House. The big concert, held in May, proved to be one ot the high lights ot the year's orchestral events. The Annual joins the Seniors ot the orchestra in the contident hope that the greatest successes tor the Herbert Hoover orchestra may lie in the years ahead. It consists ot Boys' Glee, Girls' Glee, and Choral Club. This semester the choral ensemble has one hundred and titty voices. The Choral Club numbers forty and its personnel is chosen from the Glee Clubs. This group carries the burden ot most ot the programs- appearing on an average ot once a week in service clubs, churches, and other organizations. The two outstanding programs are the Christmas Pageant and the opera. The latter was not given this year. In its stead an elaborate program ot southern songs-enhanced by one ot Mr. Hasty's famous stage sets- was given tor open house. The entire choral department presented two programs at the Exposition, and again sang at the Ford Bowl tor gradua- tion. The Choral groups furnished all music tor Vesper services. Two social events are traditional in the department, the annual Spring Dance, and the picnic at Mission Beach. r The atfairs ot the three groups were ably managed this year by the presidents and secretaries--James McCoy and Lydia Sheperd ot Choral Club, Cecelia Callahan and Charlotte Rouchleau ot Girls' Glee, and Rich- ard Varley and Duane Kilpatrick ot Boys' Glee. Sixty-eight 2 3 CLUBS E f N w How Society romotes llxforfol Peace -l-l-lE statt has chosen tor the theme ot this annual, World Peace. We chose this subject because it is ot such vital interest to us as students, and to the world as a whole. Much has been done, and much is being done to bring about a better understanding among the ditferent nations to prevent the world's becom- ing enmeshed in another tutile struggle. We have studied in our classrooms in an ettort to understand the changing conditions that make it ditticult tor a nation to stay out ot war-whether it be military rule, economic rivalry, race hatred, imperialistic desires, or other causes. Now, it is up to us to apply the ideas and theories we have learned. Many organizations and clubs outside the school have been doing much to keep alive the interest in peace-an essential it any results are to be obtained. Clubs hold discussions on current developments such as the recent Senate investigations: many organizations sponsor the appearance ot well intormed speakers whom the public is invited to hear. Interna- tional groups, through mutual interest, are doing much to bring about a cosmopolitan attitude ot mind with the hope ot bringing the nations closer together. But these leaders can do nothing it beneath them is a citizenry that can be easily swayed by propagandists, who cleverly cover up their seltish motives with idealistic slogans. The people must be tor- titied against a deluge of war propaganda by knowing the purposes and methods ot propagandist agencies, and through a better understanding ot our toreign neighbors. We who are educated along these lines must keep our minds and eyes open to tind a way through this maze ot economical and political problems to a peaceful and forward-looking world.
