Ecclesiastes, Chap. 7 Verse 12 ON EXCELLENCE: A PARABLE An old philosopher slept under a tree cloaked in a fine silk robe. He was awakened by a Prince accompanied by his young servant. That is a fine robe you have there old man said the Princeg it would rest well on my royal shoulders. The philosopher replied I will give my robe to the person who can answer this question: 'What is excellence? The Prince remained deep in thought for along while. Finally, he gave this response: Excellence is when a number of people attempt the same task and one person performs better than all the rest. Excellence is proving that you are superior to others. The old man looked sadly disappointed. But how can this be? he said. we diminish the stature of our fellow man and this is harmful. Excellence cannot be a destructive things. In asserting our superiority over others, Just then, the Prince's poor young servant spoke up: Sir, excellence is very much like that tree you are sitting un der. Every day it is a bit taller than it was the day before. Each day it gives more fruit than it gave the day before. Ex cellence is growth - and we gain excellence not in surpassing others, but only in surpassing ourselves. The old man removed his robe and placed it on the young boy's shoulders. Wear your garment proudly he said, for you have been found worthy where a Prince was found wanting. Robert Leder 2 Mal Cutler, Deputy Executive Director, Robert Folchi, Superintedent Bronx H.S. My home is the ancient Mt. Q 3 View From My Bedroom Wlndow The airwas crisp and sterile, and a symphony of miniature fowls stood atop a rusty iron fence and cooed eloquently, wistfully for their Sunday supper. Blankets of clouds culminated in a puffy linen white pile, then traversed elegantly across a placid lavender sky, making it look like an enormous, immaculate handkerchief. A gentle breeze lingered and caressed a love-starved tree, which stretched its eager limbs and received its loving gesture. Then suddenly a fierce envious wind stormed by, causing drenched garments to wave frantically for peace, while an array of clothes pins in their khaki uniforms stood at atten- tion and kept a close watch. As a passive sun subsided behind tall beige brick dwellings, a serene, celestial bliss hovered in the air. Birds quivered their inquisitive beaks for food and frolic, and bickered about their places on a defenseless tree, whilethe sun hid behind the accumulating clouds to avoid the contention. Maxine Lewis I Remember . . . I remember how it feels to relax: to lie supine on a warm summer's night undernerneath the twinkling stars, with the moon's beam stresming down on my face, the thick green grass cushioning my weary limbs, a warm breeze softly blowing, the tree's rustling leaves, as my body succumbs to fatigue, ready to sink into a deep, deep, sleep . . . I remember how it feels to get out of fresh water: my drenched hair releasing tiny droplets that roll down onto my moist face and slide down my neck, the slight tremor of my body when the open air and the water on my shin unite, making me turn and plunge back into the stream . . . I remember a beautiful scene: the horizon with all its splendor and magnifi- cence, ocean waves, mighty and furious, crashing down on the coastal rocks, then arriving calmly on the shore: the sun, that luminous ball of life, shining brightly above the earth and sea, slowly descending, joining, blend- ing with the other elements until they are gloriously one . . . I remember my favorite piece of music: quietly sitting, listening to the medley, feeling the mellow serenade rush within me, absorbing the words and chant- ing them aloud: dancing, spinning, leaping and singing, performing my own musicale . . . I remember laughing: the physical pleasure of feeling joy: smiling, glowing, laughing out loud, laughing until it hurts, pure amusement, delight, content, simply enchanted with life . . . I remember soft hair: lock after of silken curls, falling smoothly in my hands I remember a fender kiss: soft, moist lips pressing gently on mine. I am suddenly overwhelmed with joy, blissfully happy. I feel loved, needed and wanted. Roselyn Rodriguez And this is how I view my home. I have heard its many sounds and have observed it from its inner shell: yet now I experience it only through an old memory, a vivid remembrance of sadness, aged and distant in my mind: like worn clothes kept aside: the locked trunk of brass and iron. I hold the key to the trunk in my hand, the presence of the old, warm feeling in my heart. And I feel the love, the old love, bright as day, and glowing like stars, shining in my night. A small flame burns deep inside under the sadness of my memory, and the love still warm and tender. I turn at the key with anticipating hands, then instantly an illusion of happiness, an illusion distant but fresh and filled with pleasant thoughts of yesterday, of beautiful people, enters into my frightened mind - the lovely memory of my home in my heart. This I will always remember. It was soft and tender, like a kiss, like an unbroken promise of undying love. Lorraine Hall Why was I so frightened to touch his hand? Why couldn't I find the receiver when I longed to hear his voice? Why couldn't I hug him just because he was there? Why couldn't I cry before him when my eyes drowned in their own fiery liquid. Why couldn't I share myself? So what if he knows I care? The vulnerability will help me. It will carry us through the gates of where we both should stand. If I delve inside my trembling body and pull out the tears, passions and trepidations If I hand these to him unabounded. With honesty and a deep rooted sense of who we both are He'II feel. He'll feel my naivete for all that I know is inevitable in the long run. Only to chew a nail at every ring As the ringing was replaced by a deep resonant hello His voice perplexed me and shoved my courageous thoughts back into their dark, secure, surroundings, To awaken to the realization of a monetone buzz. Fly, fly you can do so much more for within you is the spirit and it lives in you. Reach out and grasp the whole - for the mystery is yours yours is the question, yours is the answer and yours is the key to unlock the door. Just for a moment rise above all And once you are there you can never fall. Tread the earth enter the oceans feel the wind in your hair, Cleansed with water baptized in fire rise, rise, if you dare There is no limit - endless, boundless eternity is yours Let it enter through your pores Let your mind fall into you cradle it in flowers expand your conscience out from you absorb the universes power Rise, rise you endless child You are free, you are free you are wild. Richard Doc Sanders Lehman High School lost a friend in the untimely death of Richard Doc Sanders on Sunday September 7, 19805 just one day before the start of the new term. Even as he lay in the hospital in his last days, he was concerned with what was going on in Lehman. He called school two days before he died, to find out how the hospitalized parent of one of the teachers was doing. That's a friend. On this summer vacation, though feeling ill, he fulfilled his military obligation for two weeks in August, as a Lieu- tenant Colonel in the Army Reserve College in Pennsylva- nia. Mr. Sanders reputation for motivating learning was wide spread. He was requested by various military schools to demonstate his teaching techniques, and meth- odology. He loved teaching, and he loved his students. Why was Mr. Sanders twice honored as PSAL coach of the year when he coached basketball at Brandeis High School? Simple! He was a masterful teacher and he de- manded very high standard. He stressed being prepared and brought excitement and enthusiasm into the class- 76 . i I I A 1 A Q -, quuuunuulnr '1 . . ,M ,,.,,,,. 5 N nu. . .f .-umm.. . WI. U , f5'. I ff ya . , 0 Ann' S, ., I 1 l Q ii room that was catching. Mr. Sanders was very proud of Lehman. He demonstrat- ed his pride and loyalty to Lehman in many ways. He at- tended countless extracurricular activities, games, shows, musicales, concerts and was Lehman's 111 cheer- leader and fan. He was happy whenever his coaches had a victory and consoled the players after a rough game. He shared the pride of the teams who won championships and medals. When Lehman won, he wore the greatest medal of all, his smile. Much more could be said about the man who entered the lives of everyone here at Lehman, but for now let us prqu that his spirit will continue to pervade the halls of our school. Perhaps when you think you've heard someone say, Set to class , or Whose covering the locker room , or Why don't you take up jogging , or Go get 'em tiger! , you'll raise your fingers to your brow in a salute, and say, O.K. We were dazzled in the field of drama: we were charmed with musicales, we were enriched with art, we were made proud by our teams' victoriesp and still we found time to welcome a new principal, who has proven to be a great asset to our school. The graduating class of Lehman is proud and thankful to have received a mean- ingful education. We are confident that our teachers have properly prepared us for future challenges. We have been fortunate in cultivating strong and lasting friend- ships with many special people. As graduates of Lehman, we will look back on our high school days as a time of learning and maturing as well as a period of carefree youth. We are departing not quite as young as when we began. We have gained the experience and skills to enable us to enter the world with a sense of pride in our accomplishments and with the spirit to make a worthwhile contribution in life. lt is due to Lehman's inculcation of positive feelings and its dedicated staff that we the graduates feel confident enough to make an ambitious statement to the years to comel Desiree Ayala ' un N .
