Led by the enthusiastic instruction of Coach Sallie Baker, the Junior Varsity girl’s basketball team used their ability to the fullest extent. Many injuries were experienced by the players this year, but they defi- nitely pulled through and made the best use of every player. As a whole, the team had great potential, which was a lucky asset due to the inexperience of many of the members. Spirited co-captains, Lori Calabrese Jesse Pernell and Barrie Smithers helped accent the enthusiasm shown by the JV team. Lee-Davis and [Patrick Henry were the two tough- est teams in the district and were a great challenge to Henrico. Many of Coach Baker’s problems were alle- viated this year by two trainers, Jackie Bridges and Anita Williams, who helped Miss Baker manage the girls through this trying season. The 1977 Warrior Varsity football team, under the superb guidance of Coach John Brown, started off the season at a fast pace. The squad rated as one of the area’s best teams and finished in third place ina strong Colonial District; thus having set the best record Henrico has had in the past four years. A new field at Chappell Stadium and the introduction of the “Hustle Team” added enthusiasm to im- pressive home wins. Springing out to a great start with big wins over Meadowbrook and Lee-Davis, the ““Warrior Wishbone” was virtually unbeatable. With Junior Tom Bowles di- recting the attack and experienced Senior halfbacks, Dave Hollis and Randy Plum- mer leading the way, the offense showed great potential. A strong defense, led by co-captains, Steve Dowdy and Kevin Gibson blocked the opponents’ attack. A heartbreaking tie with Thomas Jefferson, played in the mud, dampened spirits, but was followed by a tremendous Homecom- ing win over George Wythe. After a fan- tastic pep-rally before the Hermitage game, the Warriors went on to play their best game, defeating the Panthers. The team suffered their only losses to High- land Springs and Douglas Freeman. Rounding off their schedule with seven wins, the Warriors finished a fine season. Hard work through the hot summer and satisfying practices strengthened the team’s unity and spirit throughout the season. After many years of football, the Seniors experienced a winning season in their final year on the Henrico Varsity football team. f Wallace Clark Quarterback Tom Bowles faces his Bruce Cox, Dave Hollis, and Steve opponent one-on-one.
