In their first year in Group 1-A competition, the Warriors achieved an outstanding record of 6-2-2. Led by tri-captains Chipper Clarke, Doug Moyer, Walter Zyglocke, and the two leading runners, Chip Evans and Carl Jones, the varsity team scored an average of 14.5 points per game. The Warriors won the statistical battle but came out on the short end of a 19-14 score against Thomas Jefferson in the season opener. Henrico gained 174 yards rushing to T. J.’s 130, while T. J. led in passing yardage, 63 to 52. The Warriors scored more first downs, 10-7. Fullback Chip Evans was named ‘Back of the Week”’ by local newspapermen for his outstand- ing play in this game. Evans gained 126 yards on 14 carries and scored both Warrior TD’s. Henrico scored in every period, played all 44 mem- bers of the team, and used a tremendous goal-line stand to preserve a 25-0 shut-out over the Varina Blue Devils. Carl Jones led the ball carriers with 67 yards on 10 carries. Chipper Clarke completed three passes for 41 yards, and Russell Cornett intercepted a pass. Doug Moyer’s blocking and defense were also game highlights, along with a great team defense that held Varina to only 29 total yards. In the John Marshall game, the Justices converted Warrior mistakes into scores, defeating Henrico 13-0. 106 WARRIORS EXCEL OF GROUP 1-A Despite good defensive play, a rain soaked crowd of 3,000 saw the warriors lose, even though they won the statistical battle. The Warriors rebounded with a win over the Meadowbrook Monarchs. After a tackle by Moyer, the ball was fumbled into the hands of Chipper Clarke. He raced 95 yards for the first touchdown in the War- riors 20-0 win over Meadowbrook, as the Warriors chalked up another victory. The Warriors powered their way to touchdowns the first two times they had the ball and crushed Highland Springs’ hopes for a homecoming victory under a 20-0 score. Ron Gibson intercepted a Springer pass and ran 25 yards for the last Warrior touchdown, climax- ing a game that saw the Springers gain only 57 yards. One of the highlights of the 1965 season was the Warrior 21-20 victory over Lee-Davis. With Chipper Clarke, Chipper Collins, and Walter Zyglocke leading the way, Henrico handed Lee-Davis its first and only loss in a spectacular game, before a standing-room- only crowd. After the Confederates scored on the open- ing kickoff, Henric o intercepted a pass on the Lee- Davis 26 yard line and ran for a score. A 49 yard pass to Chipper Collins brought the second touchdown for the Warriors and after a series of passes to McGuinn
