WL it +1 ,Mx . X.. Schuler und Schulerin en Deutscher Klassen. 633, In X X The record rooms of the Henderson Library are well-stocked with selec- tions for use in Speech, English, and Language work, as well as with musical recordings. ILA E. TURNER PERCY TURRENTINE ALLIE C. WILSON ssociate Professor Professor Emeritus Head Librarian BA, Henderson-Brown B.A., Henderson-Brown B.S.E., M.A., University MA-1 Emory University M.A., Ph.D., Harvard of Arkansas E.S., George Peabody College for Teachers languages anh literature The aim of the division is to assist students to understand, use and enioy languages and literature. Obviously, effec- tive understanding and use of English are necessary to every citizen of our country. It is less obvious, but not less true, that ability to enioy the world's greatest literature is necessary to all educated citi- zens. Furthermore, the divi- sion hopes to aid and encour- age those students whose creative ability indicates that they may make some con- tribution to the literature of the English-speaking nations. The objectives in teaching foreign languages - French, German, and Spanish - are the same as those iust set forth, with the exception of the reference to creative writing. Yet, besides this similarity of values in the study of Eng- lish and foreign languages, there stands a great and novel value that can be had only by the study of lan- guages other than our own, namely, the value of becom- ing acquainted with a new world of thought and expres- sion, feeling and tradition. The teaching of speech, which is the first and univer- sal form of language expres- sion, follows a like pattern. The four fields of study are forensics, dramatics, radio and speech correction. The chief obiective is the effective use of spoken English in everyday conversation and in public speaking. The sec- ondary, though extremely important, obiective is the development of individual talent for enioyment or, in the cases of exceptional tal- ent, for a professional career.
