TBAJNERS HOMECOMING QUEEN Tommy Husband, Bill Phillips Queen Barbara lohnsion Captain Baird Peek Coaches: Duke Wells, Robert Thompson, Burris Lowry Tl-IE l945 FCCTBALL SEASON BY BILL HALL1BUE'roN AND IIM GREENE CSports Editors of the StarD We're proud of the record our Henderson Reddies made in football this season. Although Coach Duke Wells was notified only a few days before school opened that the Arkansas Inter-Collegiate Athletic Conference had lifted the three-year ban on football, he took what material was on hand and developed a Well rounded football squad. None of the 1945 Reddies had had any previous experience in college football. Reinforced by returning service men who had played ball in high school, the team steadily improved. There is little doubt that if Coach Wells had had his end-of-season squad as early as September the Reddies would have emerged with a much bright- er record. Statistics for the season read: three games won and five lost, with the Redrnen scoring 62 points to their opponents' 92. But the Reddies were a much better team than the figures indicate. They finished second only to the powerful Arkansas Tech 'Wonder Boys in the A.l.A.C. Henderson also had the distinction of being the only teah in the nation to score against Tech, one of the eleven college and university teams to complete the games with an undefeated and untied record. The Redmen also scored as many extra points and safeties as their opponents. tm A it x-R. Northeast Center team in Monroe, Louisiana. As the Reddies had been drilling only two weeks be- fore the opener, they considered it a moral vic- tory when they held the Louisianans to two touchdowns. REDDIES 21-OUACHITA O Two weeks later the Redmen were ready to meet their traditional cross-town rivals at Ouachita. The Henderson eleven thrilled the large crowd by completely trouncing the Tigers to the tune of 21-O in their own back yard. The game was played under the lights at A. U. Williams Field. By this time they had gained the whole-hearted support ot the Henderson students and fans. REDDIES U-ARKANSAS TECH 22 But the Reddies didn't get the big-head, for they knew that only one week away stood the tough struggle with the Arkansas Tech Wonder Boys in Russellville. Tech-rated by some experts as the best college eleven in the state, including the Arkansas Razorbacks-was held to but three touchdowns and a safety. The Reddies returned home to find the entire student body behind them as always, in vic- tory or in defeat. STARS REDDIES 7-EAST OKLAHOMA TEACHERS 27 The Redmen felt confident of a victory on October 26, the lnauguration Day of our new president, Dr. D. D. 1VIcBrien, but the scheduled Arkansas State Teachers College Bears were forced to cancel their game. Coach Wells was determined to book a game for the big occasion and succeeded in pitting his Henderson Red- dies against the powerful East Oklahoma State Teachers College Tigers. Fans were thrilled upon hearing that another Reddie-Tiger game was on the menu, since any Bengal team is always a bitter enemy. The heavier, more ex- perienced Oklahomans finally wore the scrap- ping Reddies down and scored a 27-to-7 vic- tory. But, as always, we still thought the HSTC lads were plenty good. REDDIES 13-ARKANSAS STATE U The following week the mighty Reddies were hosts to the Arkansas State College Indi- ans from Ionesboro. It was a cold, dark and rainy afternoon, but this didn't bother the Wells Wows. The Reddie spirit soared in the heart of every loyal Hendersonian as the victors marched from the Haygood Stadium where the scoreboard read: 13 to O. lames Gaza Guard, wt. 176 Billy loe Greeson Tackle, wt. 182 Happy Harris Tackle, wt. 172 L. When 2 p. m. on November 16 rolled around, Coach Duke and our Reddies weren't the least bit frightened by the undefeated, untied, unscored- on record of the Wonder Boys. Tech brought its band and a large portion of the student body to witness what they thought would be another push-over. They were disappoint- ed, however, because the Reddies fought them tooth and toenail in their best-played garne of the year before bowing, 25-6. The Reddie spir- it soared again, for our boys had done what no other team had done-THEY HAD SCORED ON TECH!! We were more proud of our six points-the last touchdown of the game-than the Russellville fans were of their 25. Those six points proved to be all that marred an oth- erwise perfect season for Arkansas Tech. REDDIES 15-STATE TEACHERS O The Reddies traveled to Conway to play the Arkansas State Teachers College Bears on the night of November 22. Two bus-loads of loyal Reddie rooters braved the bitter cold and windy weather to support their team in this conference game. They were rewarded by seeing the Redmen whip the Bears in their own den, 15 to O. STARS REDDIES O-OUACHITA 6 And so the last game of the season rolled around. lt was the contest we had been priming for all season-the 35th annual Tur- key Day home-coming football classic with Ouachita. Many local Heddie fans turned down invitations to go home for Thanksgiving just to be on hand for the Reddie-Tiger tussle. After a big pep-rally and parade-like the good ole' pre-war days- the afternoon finally arrived. ln the pre-game ceremony, Barbara Iohnston was crowned queen of the Reddies. She and her maids each presented a big kiss to the captain and players after the coronation. Both grandstands of Haygood Stadium were unable to accommodate the crowd. From the starting play until the final whistle the contest was one of the hardest fought in years. Both teams had been greatly improved since their earlier encounter, and the fans saw a great game. The Tigers eked a touchdown across, during the final period, and the Reddies came back with blood in their eyes. The aerial at- tack began to click, and the Tiger goal was getting closer. But time waits for no one: not even HSTC. The game ended with the Reddies deep in Tiger territory, easily within scoring range. We were stunned, of course, but our Red- men had played a splendid game, and We weren't too down-hearted. lt was a tough one to lose, but after all, we broke even with the Tigers for the season and finished ahead of them in the A.l.A.C. Coach Wells, the Reddies and the Reddie fans are eagerly anticipating a great year for football. Ned Richards if Ti ll! THE 1946 BASKETBALL SEASON BY lIM GREENE CCO-Sports Editor of the Starl Basketball is a game which always offers a large variety of individual accomplishments for the sports writers to play up. Even when a team has an off season, there are invari- ably certain highlights which rank a wee bit higher than those suggested by its opponents. Thus, when the 1946 cage season ended with various quintets above HSTC in the percent- age column, we could still muster enough evidence to prove that the Beddies were the best in Arkansas. ln the first place, our 1946 Beddie aggregation was the highest-scoring team in the state. Their 1421 points for the season ranked second to none. Then, too, the Bedmen were the only conference team to defeat the A.l.A.C. champion Arkansas State Teachers College Bears. Guy Martin, l'lenderson's ace center, was one of the leading scorers of the state, aver- aging ll.5 points for the 22 games in which he played. The leading Arkansas point-maker, Wylie Staggs of Magnolia AGM, had participated in only 12 games to average 16.5. What the Arkansas collegiate coaches thought of the 1946 Reddies is reflected by their selection of two Henderson players on the All-State Basketball Team. ln the selection of a non-scoring guard on the first team, they demonstrated a certain sagacity in regard to the importance of defensive play. That Carroll Wood was the outstanding defensive player in Arkansas is a fact challenged by none. Then, too, lim Fisher gained a forward berth along similar lines. Reporting for practice at mid-term, he was far down the scoring list and was just beginning to hit his stride when the season ended. lt might be mentioned that Henderson's lulius Adams made the second team All-State and Guy Martin the third team. Although near the cellar in A.l.A.C. competition, Coach Duke Wells' Beddies won 16 out of 26 games played during the regular season, ranking second only to Arkansas Tech when non-conference games were considered. After the regular season had ended, the Bed- men entered the A.A.U. tournament in Little Bock and reached the quarter-finals before being ousted in the final minutes of a close game with Ouachita. Considering the three tournament games, the Beddie season for 1946 reads as follows: Won 185 Lost 115 Percent- age .62U. With the ensuing years the wisdom of such a pro- gram became more and more apparentg but the crucial test came with the war. Taking care of our fighting forces necessitated lumber production in quan- tity without precedent. To feed the saw- mills, millions of trees were cut from the Crossett forests. Yet, under the well ad- vanced reforestation program with which is integrated the making of paper and chemicals, these same forests continue to grow and mature millions of new trees, underwriting a continuing timber supply for future harvests. ln the light of this and comparable achievements in manufacture and re- search, Crossett takes the events of the new era in their stride . . . moves to- ward the new horizons confident or brighter days and ever-broadening op- portunities for all those engaged in the lumber industry and trade.
