Henceforth, when you meet us, it will be as indiv- iduals, each with his own place in the universe and not as a group. Tonight marks not only the end of one part of our lives, but the beginning of a whole new and wonderful experience. The frontiers offered in to- day's world are many and varied, and with ambition, initiative, and work, we may achieve the goal at which we aim We must not halt, satisfied, for we are just beginning to live Yes to live in a world with a challenge on every side of us a challenge to dedi cate the forces 09 our youth to the tasks before As a final thou ht, I should like to recall a ngle line from Tennyson's Ulysses "Come, 'tis not too late to seek a newer world " Once more, I bid you welcome, and I hope you enjoy our final part in the history of Hemlock High School THE VALEDICTORY Tonight, we of the graduating class, would like to have you think along the lines of a Master Man and as we examine our characters, see how closely you fit the necessary requirements Since there are about one hundred forty million people in the United States, there are probably many different conceptions, of the Master Man, but an anonymous author su marizes the qualifications tersely and remarkably well, so we shall pattern ourselves according to him The Master Man 'has achieved success," the quo tation states, if he 'has lived well, laughed often and loved much ' As about to be graduates, we have lived well under the expert guidance of parents and teachers We have laughed often, mostly in study hall, when try as we may, those supressed giggles somehow come forth Needless to say, we love much Our model man leaves 'the world better than he found it " Our contribution to world society may citizens brighter of intel be minor but not meaningless We are the of tomorrow and shall strive to make it a more glorious one, but first the barriers erance must be shattered How can we win peace if races do not push aside their grievances a vital A. -. The world must be returned to its natu- status and we, you and I, are the ones to under- take the task. Like the Master Man, swmnon your initiative and plunge forward to leave the world better than you found it. At this point, our comparison may become a con trast The passage says that the Master Man 'has never lacked appreciation of the earth's beauty nor failed to appreciate it How many times have you taken for granted the innumerable beauties of nature? We, as a whole, do not appreciate what nature has placed before us Only those who through some affliction have been deprived of these phenomena appreciate fully their value Continuing the comparison, to live up to the qualifications we must look for the best in others and give the best we have All too frequently, we fail to do this It is not always easy but attempts are never overlooked We wish people to see our talents just as they wish us to see theirs The last standard for us to meet to qualify as Master Men is to make our individual life an "inspi ration and our memory a "bened1ct1on Throughout our school years we have set examples and followed those set for us Our memories are a benedictlon to the years we hope we have spent well In closing, I would like to quote the entire, short passage I have used as a theme It, too, is entitled "THE MASTER MAN' 'He has achieved success who has lived well, laughed often and loved much, who has gained the respect of intelligent men, the trust of pure women and the love of little children, who has filled his niche and accomplished his task, who has left the world better than he found it, whether by an improved poppy, a perfect poem, or a rescued soul, who has never lacked appreciation of the earth's beauty nor failed to appreciate it, who has looked for the best in others and given the best he had, whose life was an inspiration, whose memory is a benediction can only add, Amen We are about to become graduates of Hemlock High School As such, we realize that we have a choice of the professions and should strive to make our decision in such a way as to make our Alma Mater as proud of us as we are of her Someone says, "Pan you do it" It is indeed a challenge but, When Duty whispers low "thou must", The youth replies, I can var if -ap. g, 'Q'-'gf '-'ei-r age if-. ,, ,,,, Z 1-'f gg? 3? 4549 SF , 4' Iggy 6 1 R 5'4- se 5' Q B- 'E'- I " "F s J 1-r,-,L E' if 318 3 "J 1 as fix,-.. 33, 'E lj, T' ' ? .1 PM 'Gig 5 'ff ' 'fl 'YS . w .
