1985 HUSKIE REVUE When we think of Leonard, we think of his slfrsia of humor and out going personality; Wefchink of the way he made the school dances fun and livened up classes. Those of us who $he privilege of knowing him will never forget fiTm. ‘‘Coke” not only helped his fellow classmates, but llso other amputees, lik$ Ted Kennedy Jr. and Paul McDonald, whom to taught to ride a bike. Len biked many miles a aay. One ear after His operation, he mastered the slopes and joined the ski team.'“Coke” took the downhill on his one leg like it as nothing. That’s why the news of his death came as such a sljock. hfsJ extreme determination and personality will be remembered by one and all. He was Hemlock High School’s agricul- ture teacher from 1964 to 1978. He will be remembered not only for his many accomplishments in Future Farmers of America and his development of a vocational agriculture program but also for his caring, thoughtfulness, and dedication. He made a difference for our school. His colleagues, students, and friends will feel his absence. We dedicate the teacher section of the 1985 Year Book to the mem- ory of Ed. ALUMNI Officers—(Itor) Joel Wardin—Secretary, Cheryl Carpenter —Vice President, Don LeClair—Treasurer, Missing, Loren Mueller—President. The primary purpose of the F.F.A. Alumni is to help the F.F.A. The Alumni is an organization for former F.F.A. members, ag. graduates, and farmers. This is the sec- ond year the Hemlock Alumni has been in operation. Early in the year, members lost a close friend, fellow farmer, and active member—Ed Munger. In his memory, they began an agricultural scholarship for F.F.A. members. This scholarship may be avail- able for 1986 high school graduates who plan to study ag. in college. Members elected officers and met once per month from October to May. 62 “IF WINTER COMES, CAN Ah, those glorious snow days, that teachers, students, and even administrators look forward to once in a while became more than we bargained for this year. The area was swamped with blowing and drifting snow and ice. Buses stayed parked and cancellations filled the air waves. Parents bit the bullet and smiled wanly at their children’s faces day after day. Cars groaned, “you want me to do what”, and refused to cooperate. The more diligent managed to clear their drives just in time to have the road trucks fill in the entrance. Those who finally coaxed their vehicles to life went their various ways, like warriors into battle, armed with shovels, salt, and the determination to make their destination if for no other reason than to complain about road conditions. Some kids actually got bored enough to clean their rooms. Day after day with no end seemingly in sight, we kept our sanity by mumbling to ourselves “well, it’s Michigan, give it a day; it’ll change”. Finally, the sun peeped through, the snow stopped and we got back to the norm—oh hum, and I had just settled in for a long winter’s nap. 64 SPRING BE FAR BEHIND?” 1st row (1 to r) Jamie Eskstorm, Karen Reife, Teresa Clark. HHS BAND SOARS TO NEW HEIGHTS 66 The band certainly is soaring high, literally. This past summer they flew to Germany to compete in the Nuremburg Music Festival where they took a first place in concert band and a second place over all. Then, this January, they were off to Washington, D.C. where the concert band again took a first place, and stage band took a second. They will be off on their “wings of glory’’ again this coming fall on their way to Japan to compete in a music festival there. Of course, going to all of these places costs money, and they have been working about as hard on earning money as they have on learning their music. They have hejd a magic show, a bazaar, car washes, spaghetti suppers, and have sold everything from candy to free car raffle tickets. They have been working and will continue to work hard to keep improving the band program. The Hemlock band is definitely a prime example of what a little hard work and determination will accomplish. For the first time, the eight members were able to compete as a team in the four gymnastic events (there must be at least four girls for each event). Before this year, the girls lacked the skills necessary to compete. The high-point this year was participating in the biggest invitational in the state—the 20 team meet at Freeland, where Camie West placed 6th out of the 200 girls that competed. At the meet with Vassar, Becky Cole placed 4th, Laurie West tied for 2nd and Camie West was 1st. The 1985 M.V.P. is Camie West. She qualified for high school regional competition and for the state finals in the United States Gymnastics Federation. I’d like to thank my faithful fellow yearbook staffers—Ann Debozy, Tanya Yaggie, Heather Hammond, Janet Hare, and Rich Davis. I’d also like to thank the other people who participated—Shari Schultz and Cathy Tyra. I’d also like to thank Debbie Shields for all her help and cooperation. Debbie made my job a lot easier. And I’d like to give special thanks to Becky Corzilius from I.C.P. for all her help and patience. I’d like to wish all my fellow classmates good luck in the future and good luck to the classes of ’86 and ’87. Despite all the snow days and set backs, I was glad to have been part of this book and the yearbook staff hopes you’ll find this book as enjoyable as we did. P.S. I think we all owe my mom, Mrs. Beverly Davis, alot of thanks for being advisor for the past two years. She has decided to retire after this year and I hope future staffers will have an advisor that is equally as wonderful as “MOMS DAVIS”.
