HEMLOCK HUSKIES PRESENT MOMENTS TO REMEMBER 1984 DEDICATION Cindy Royal We the staff of the 1984 yearbook have decided to dedicate this year's publication to Cindy Royal, a loyal friend and willing student whose parting left us not only startled but saddened and lonely. We take pride in the fact that we had a chance to know her and take part in her life. Those of us who knew her admired her strength and determination in the face of what to some of us would have been unsurmountable odds. She may be gone, but she's far from forgotten. She left us many moments to remember. 2 HOMECOMING PARADE 3 HOMECOMING COMMITTEE Student Council members make plans for the 1983 homecoming activities as Mr. Baumann listens in. Pictured are Sarah Sarchet, John Morrison, Kim Nehmer, and Tammy Konecny. They chose Show Time as the theme, kicking off activities with a pep assembly and spirit night. Floats drifted down the streets of Hemlock on a beautiful fall evening as the parade caught one and all's attention. The game followed the parade with Hemlock winning the starring place. The homecoming dance Saturday wound up a star studded weekend. Alfred Basner—Secretary Edwin Goodman—Treasurer Richard Campbell—-Trustee Wilbert Preuss—Trustee Rolland Benford—Principal 18 TWENTY FIVE YEARS AGO The Hemlock High School building is 25 years old this year. A lot of memories are abounding in these hall and many more are in the offing. Below is a picture of the old Hemlock High building which has since been torn down. The dedication is the original one from the 1959 Year Book. Recently we bid farewell to an old friend and greeted a new one. That friend, the old high school building, has long been a part of our town and of our lives. As we sit among our new surroundings we find our eyes wan- dering to the windows to gaze at it. If we could recall only a minute part of all the memories we have shared there, what a fortune that would be. Sometimes we laughed, sometimes we cried; but always the school stood calm, undaunted, and ready to greet us. Regardless of what we felt one day we were happy to be a part of it the next. Here at Hemlock we are only a very small part of the great educational system of our State, nation, and world, but still we are like one big family held together by common inter- est, activities, and tradition. Our old building was the center about which our lives revolved up until a few short months ago. Even though it has been replaced by a new building it will never be replaced in our hearts and minds. 19 CENTRAL ADMINISTRATION L. Gariglio—Superintendent Left to Right—G. Sanford, P. Dupuis, S. Rick—Assistant Principal How do I spell relief? J. Rivard—Secretary Anyone else hear that ticking in here? We are very fond of our office staff and are using some well intended humor on them. They are never too busy to show patience and aid to one and all. Thanks for the memories. 21 Ready For Family Feud STUDENT COUNCIL Standing left to right Cindy Honig, Dave Byron, Shelley Dufort, Jeff Durfee, Virginia Klopf, Davna Golombisky Sitting left to right Jonell Davis, Tammy Konecny—Secre- tary, Sarah Sarchet—President, John Morrison—Vice President, Kim Nehmer—Trea- surer, Lauretta Oravitz This year's spectacular Home- coming was the result of the hard work of the Student Council. This year's Student Council worked to give us dances and assemblies, and brightened Christmas for all by decorating a tree in the Student Cen- ter. The group helped to fill many empty Xmas stockings by merging with the F.F.A. in a food drive. Activities not only affected the high school but also the elementary when they dressed up and passed out candy on Halloween. Thanks to the Student Council for not only serving as an in- put for the student body but also for all they've done for the school and community 22 Hey! Mr. Baumann and Mr. Benford hosted the evening, greeting one and all with wide smiles and out stretched hands. Mr. Gippert and band members entertained while refreshments were served by Student Council and F.F.A. members. Visitors strolled the hallways, spoke with the teaching staff, and viewed student projects. For some it was a first visit, but for many a trip down memory lane as they re- called their own days at Hemlock High. 49 Front row (1 to r) Keith Gross, John Moore, Robert Betz, Mike Kraniak, Joe Mikek, Jonell Davis, Brenda Frederick, Steve Barnovitz, John Meechem, Steve Knoerr, Steve Rogers Back row (1 to r) Howard Patterson, Lance Wright, Richard Davis, Mike Radosa, Troy Beyersdorf, Tim Bray, Marty Neuenfeldt, Steve Tessin, Doug Hollingsworth, Tina Mull, Ron Kraniak, LeRoy Zastrow. Joe Mikek and Troy Beyersdorf taking care of the soybean harvest. This was one of the most successful years for the Future Farmers of America. This year, former Hemlock Agriculture students formed an alumni group to help the FFA. FFA members attended Leader- ship Contests at Breckenridge and brought home first, second and third place wins. The officers went on retreat to the Shera- ton Hotel to plan activities for National FFA Week. The chapter also played a game of Donkey Basketball against the faculty. They attended the State FFA convention at M.S.U. and made profits by selling seeds and fruit. Troy Beyersdorf and Joe Mikek worked the chapter field. They harvested 30-32 bushels of soybeans per acre on the 48 acre field. 50 1984 FFA Officers are (1 to r) Kevin Wardin (Historian), Jonell Davis (Treasurer), Mike Kraniak (Vice-President), Mia Durham (President), Mike Radosa (Secretary) Steve Barnovitz (Reporter), Brenda Frederick (Sentinel). This year's High School Band is really going places, literally. For the past two years they have competed in international competitions in Niagra Falls and Toronto which, with the help and recommendation of Scottish band director Trevor Green (he was visiting Hemlock as part of a tour of American school band programs), they have qualified for the Nuremburg Music Festival in Nuremburg, Germany in July of this year. They will be the first American band to attend the festival ever. The band has been working towards the trip since last year and will keep working until they leave this summer. They have been holding car washes, card parties, selling candy, selling raffle tickets, and many other fund raising activities. The band has been having concerts since the begin- ning of the school year which have been quite successful. At the District Band Festival they received straight l's (a perfect score). The first band ever to do so in Hemlock. We wish the band much luck for their coming trip. Membership is an excellent reference to a student's character and provides an impetus for consistent academic achievement and continued service to the school and community. Membership is a nationally recognized honor and is open to Hemlock juniors and seniors who are selected by a faculty council upon recommen- dation by the faculty. Members host the Awards Assembly each spring and act as goodwill ambassadors for such events as baccalaureate, and graduation. Bea Wallace is the Hemlock chapter's adviser. 82 REFLECTIONS Time to reflect upon our school building which is 25 years old this year; and upon our Principal who is more than 25 years old this year. So quietly standing unable to speak Time makes you older, renders you weak Memories keep you young, no need for remorse Mere wood, brick, and mortar aren't your governing force In days to come we will reflect Upon these years with circumspect And find that these above all the rest Really were the very best BEFORE—1959 AFTER—1984 What a difference a day makes! Try 25 years. Notice the happy almost serene face of the class room teacher and coach as compared to that of the steely-eyed, iron-jawed Principal of a high school holding off marauders armed with lunch trays and cameras. Thanks Mr. Baumann for all the years of dedication and for maintaining your unique sense of humor. 83 TOGA, TOGA, TOGA In April the Senior Class presented a play called Toga, Toga, Toga, which deals with an unauthorized frat house nicknamed The Zoo . Payments on the Zoo are met by renting to an odd assortment of characters. At a wild toga party in honor of the first mortgage payment, everything explodes, and so sets the scenario for this exceptionally well acted play. We worked ahead of all of our deadlines and although none of us had any prior experience, we managed to produce what we hope you'll find to be a great book. I'd like to thank my fellow yearbook staffers for all their hard work and I'd especially like to thank our advisor Mrs. (Dastardly) Davis, Mr. Adams our financial manager, and Kris and Mary Kirby and Tom Vranich from ICP. Jonell Davis Editor P.S. Congratulations Class of 1984. Best of luck to you and remember as you go down life's path you know when you're growing old when—your little black book contains only names ending in M.D., You get wind- ed playing chess. You sit in a rocking chair and can't get it started. Your knees buckle but not your belt. You sink your teeth into a steak and they stay there. Have a sense of humor, keep your chin up, and strive to be the best at whatever you choose to do. 127 IN FOND MEMORY OF LEONARD J. BUTKO COKE Coke passed away April 21, 1984 after a lengthy illness. He will be sadly missed, and fondly remembered by everyone. ✓
