The student council had a successful year. It helped bright- en the school by donating tbe paint for tbe abstract mural in the hallway. From profits made at the basketball concession stands, the organization placed the first payment on the intercom system. The members spent a day at Birch Run to see how their student leaders worked. The student council sponsored a valentine Morp dance, in which females asked males. Also in February, they organized spirit week. There were dress-up days and activities during lunch. 18 Back Row: Advisor Mrs. Gunther. Dawn Starke. Ben Crump. Dirk Entzian. Joe King. Front Row: Cathy Tyra, Linda Cross. Ann Debozy. Tammy Case. A group of students, headed by Mrs. Gunther, produced a paper monthly to keep the students informed of the school’s events. The imaginative illustrations and the advice column were ingredi- ents that were never seen before in previous papers. o c QJ Vi 3 O ro Vi ro ( ) n o o 19 O c fU CO (Row I): Sarah Sarchet. They kept the community well entertained with con- certs throughout the year. They helped with homecoming by constructing a float and playing for the game. The band aided the school’s assemblies by leading the student body in the school song. They had a Christmas concert which filled the audi- ence with the holiday spirit. The HHS band received a I at District and a II at State which is the best they have done in the past few years. The band traveled to Toronto for an international music festi- val, where they took second place. They played at the Bavarian Festival in Frankenmuth, too. The musi- cians fund raisers were a rock-a-thon, car wash, candy sales, spaghetti dinner, T-Shirt sales, kit sale, canister sale, and a Bar-B-Que. These helped finance their Toronto trip and European Tour scheduled for the summer of '84. The sky's the limit for the band, and the talent is shining through. 20 Kristi Wegner. BOEC has completed another successful year. Hemlock’s members should be proud of themselves. They represented the school with fine style. Several fundraisers were undertaken enthusiastically. The money helped finance the trip to the state competition at the Detroit Rennaisance Center. Here, ten placed with two qualifying for nationals. Jean Rauchholz and Cathy Priest went to Chicago and successfully placed here too. Hemlock definitely completed another year with dignity. 23 Cathy Priest. Jean Rauchholz. It's High Time” was presented on January 13 and 15, 1983. Hard work, dedication, and determination made the play a huge success. Bill Wade, the director, had the assistance of Andrea Johnston, the student di- rector. in producing an exciting presentation. 31 Krazy This year’s production of the Senior Play turned out extremely well. The class of 1983 put on Krazy Kamp for the public’s enjoyment and amusement. It was a light-hearted comedy centered around the mixing of an all-girls camp and an all-boys camp. The resulting affects were hilarious, creating three days of fine per- formances. 32 Kamp Eve Hunnicutt.......... Alva Doright........... Adam Apple............. Willard................ It was against St. Peter and Paul. The individuals who partici- pated showed enthusiasm and excitement. Unfortunately, that wasn’t quite enough to win the meet. Hemlock slipped behind in the first section which consisted of 20 different written tests which proved to be rather challenging. Artists' skills were tested in the second section-, they used charcoal and chalk to draw their perspective of a still life. The Huskies did quite well in section three by earning 49 points; St. Peter and Paul’s score was kept down to 39. When all events were over, Hemlock's competition came out ahead with a score of 152 while we had 105. A special thanks to all coaches, participants, and supporters. 34 Academic Track Meet Point Winners: Mary Ayre—Dramatic Read (2nd) Tim Breternitz—Instrum Group Ann Debozy—Geography (3rd) Pam Diener—General Math (3rd) Matt Ewald—Instrum Solo (1st) Brenda Frederick—Digit-O-Clock (2nd) Paul Greskowiak—Instrum Group Keith Grubaugh—Instrum Group Fleather Hammond—Word-O-Clock (1st) Amy Hubbard—Girls Trio Denise Hubbell—Human Ecol. The memories of Prom will be in the hearts of all who attended forever. 41 An 'Apple’ for the Students The technology of Apple moved to Hemlock High School this year. Through the generosity of Dow Chemical and the Hemlock School Board, four computers were purchased for Hemlock. The high school’s class schedule was expanded to offer new classes to initi- ate the new computers. The addition of these computers made it possible for each student to have more exposure during class hours and more time to work with them. At regionals, they captured first place by outdistancing their competitors. This feat assured them a ticket to the state finals. The team’s top runner, sopho- more Julie Watson, broke a school record with a time of 18:47. Finnish ex- change student Susanna Sarva made a new senior record. The team won all their dual meets and did well at invitationals. The man behind the team was coach Bill Agresta. By working hard and giving valuable advice, he helped the team reach success. 44 Sets the Pace Back Row: Greg Updike. John Morrison. Jeff Greskowiak. Bill Nyman. Curt Mielke. Richard Gofton. Front Row: Todd Ware. Rick Majeski, Ben Walker. Brian Oldenburg. Doug Hegenauer. The boys’ cross-country team of 1982 was something the community of Hemlock can be proud of. The team of runners was defeated in only one dual meet by a tough Garber squad. At the regional meet the team was confident. With a full team effort, they placed second. At the re- gional meet, the Hemlock squad placed second also, losing only to the Garber by three points. Going into the state meet, Hemlock’s cross- country team was rated 7th. On a cold November morning, the men pulled off a complete team effort and finished an impressive 4th in the state. 45 Huskie Varsity Football Third Row: Paul Jurek. Tim Bretermtz. Tom Neunfeldt. You've made it—Sophomores of '85. We're the best! The rest aren't alive! ’Cause we’re the Class of 1985. It’s been hectic but lots of funl Thanks for teaching us how to be advisers. GOOD LUCK CLASS OF '83 PATRONS 135 Editor’s Last Words Warm thanks to . . . Mr. Adams, our financial advisor, for all of his support and encouragement. Bob Hutfiltz, our advisor, for his guidance and the work he contributed to this book. The marketing class, for selling the ads. Chris and Mary Kirby, for their words of advice and guidance. The yearbook staff members, for their undying sense of dedication and determination. May I sigh with reliefs the 1983 yearbook has finally reached completion. There was much controversy this year, on whether Hemlock High School would even have a yearbook. Various students, interested and enthusiastic, kept a staff in existence. We had a fairly inexperienced group this year, myself in- cluded. We all learned the ropes together. A lot of hard work has been put into The Huskie Hall of Fame. The tedious hours seemed endless at times. We managed to overcome all of the many obstacles however, and turn in all 136 pages. The frantic rush to meet deadlines, the time needed to revise lay- outs, the choosing of those special pictures, and all of the copy that had to be written is finally over. I’d like to thank the staff members that stuck it out until the end. They had the patience, dedication, and determination necessary to finish this book. The staff now anxiously awaits the arrival of the final production, hoping that all the time spent was worthwhile. I hope in years to come, you can look back through this yearbook and reflect on the meaningful memories that you have acquired during your high school times. It has been a pleasant and unique experience working with the yearbook staff in creating this book. I am glad I was able to be a part of it.
