----- 11 This time, like all times, 3 Student Council r Top To Bottom: Dave Madden (12), Kristi Wegner (11), Vice President Keith Carey, Betsy Wardin (FFA). Secretary Lynn Erskine, Helen Madden (11), Treasurer Tom Zolinski, Cris Gudaits (10), Pat Rutkiewicz (10), President Cheryl Weise, Kris Carey (Band), Janice Kade (Pom Pon). The student council helped to pull us through this year. They organized many pep assemblies to lift our spirits including the Homecoming pep assembly. Later on, In the winter, they helped keep the spirit going by putting on SPIRIT Week where students could dress up as their favorite sport, as a slob, as a punk rocker, and as a cowboy or Indian. Not only did they keep our spirit going, they voiced the opinion of the student body. President Cheryl Weise spoke at the S.T.E.P. meeting held at the school In February. 5 is a very good one 6 7 6u!UUOO0uuoh 8 Despite the cold weather, the Homecoming this year was one ot our more happier times. It began at the pep assembly where the king and queen were announced. Later on, the queen and her court, the class floats, and the senior concert band made their way around Hemlock in the Homecoming parade. After the parade was over, the football game against Carrollton began. All In all, It turned out to be a good night for Hemlock. We won over the Cavaliers, 28 to 6. 9 Pom Pon Girls This year was one of the best years for the 1981-82 Pom Pon squad. With the help of their advisor, Jackie Heath, the girls performed at pep assemblies, football games, and basketball games. They added entertainment to our gatherings by presenting routines with gloves, pom pons, and flashlights. They arranged the parents’ night for varsity football and for girls’ varsity basketball. The 1981-82 Pom Pon squad attended clinics, and they also made a special performance for the Fashion Square Skating Center. All in all, this group of fifteen girls has done an outstanding job representing our school. Top to bottom, left to right: Cindy Beck, Captain Rhonda Clare, Ann Brindley, Tracy Pacholke, Co-Captain Willajean Yahn, Karen Mlkek, Julie Turner, Kelly Draper, Kathy Smith, Jill Murphy, Dee Kenny, Peggy Curtis, Janice Kade. Front Row: Diane Thorington, Ann Wudel, Diane Pavllch, Lynn Erskine. JV Below Lett: Back Row: Tammy Konecny, Sarah Sarchet, Tammy Ostrowski. Middle: Kim Fatura Front Row; Jackie Heinz, Debbie Giles, Holly Cushman. The J.V. and Varsity Cheerleading squads' main goals this year were to increase spirit in the school and community. Posters and locker decorations were seen throughout the building adding a special touch to otherwise plain walls. Both squads worked together with the help of their advisors, Mrs. Erskine and Mrs. Fatura. The squads put on nearly all pep assemblies and sponsored the basketball team's Parents’ Night. The squads worked with many community and school fund-raising functions and strived to uphold the fine name the Hemlock athletes have achieved. In most opinions, the year ended on a very successful note and next year’s cheerleaders are already set to begin! n Homecoming Seated: King Todd Smith and Queen Debbie Darby. The music of Star Rider entertained all that attended. During the evening, the Homecoming court was introduced, and then they danced to the theme song Step By Step . All in all, this year's Homecoming was one to remember. 13 if we but know what to do with it.” emerson M Dedication J Normally choosing a person to dedicate a yearbook to can be very difficult. Do you dedicate it to someone special in administration, an outstanding faculty member, a deeply missed unemployed I teacher? True, normally the task is very difficult, but this year it was simple. It was probably the only thing that was simple ye realize times are hard in Hemlock. Let’s ze it, times are hard all over. But there is a Iain special attitude that pulls us through difficult times. Fortunately, Hemlock has people with this attitude. Our choice is clear. Ve dedicate this book to those people, who, sspite the hard times, really care about Hemlock High School. Y- night prepared everyone for a day of excitement at Cedar Point. The climax of the day was the roller coasters, the Wildcat, the Corkscrew, and, of course, the Gemini. But all of the fun ended on the way home on the bus, when most everyone crashed. 43 Graduation This year's graduation was a time of celebration for many. For seniors, it meant the end of high school, the beginning of a new life. Commencement service was a time for the valedictorian and the salutatorian to address fellow classmates, a time for recognition of hard work. At the end of the service, smiles were seen, and shouts were heard as many of the graduates' caps sailed into the air. College, work, marriage—the graduates will go separate ways, yet they will be held together as the 1982 graduating class of Hemlock High School. 45 Going around with a camera for a nose isn’t all fun and games. Standing on the corner watching all the humans go by. Our own Larry, Moe, Curly, and Shepp. Where da ya want it, Lady? Ooo. Baby! Ya don't have to get so spastic! See what felt markers will do to ya? Couples started arriving at Delta soon after 8:30. There were long dresses and tuxedos everywhere. The night was crisp and breezy but that didn't seem to bother anyone. Inside it was cozy and warm. The lights were dim candlelight, which came from every table. The music was slow at first, as the night progressed It made a swing to rock 'n roll. When the crowd and music became too much, there was the stroll under the moonlight in the courtyard to enjoy. The evening was filled with much to do. There still were pictures to be taken, everyone wondering if they “looked alright?” Every couple had to find the cloud with their names on it written in glitter. There was cake and punch for anyone who was hungry during the busy evening. Then, something that no one wanted to happen, happened. The last song the D.J. would play for the night was played. The night of elegance and romance had come to an end. No one will ever forget that night for the rest of their lives. 69 Junior Senior banquet A wards Most Spirited . . As do most plays, this one has a happy ending. The plane made it safely to the ground after all its harrowing experiences. The play was presented on January 14 and 16, in the High School Auditorium. 79 The first academic track meet, held March 23, 1982, against Valley Lutheran High School was both invigorating and exciting. There were 16 areas of academic testing in the first section, which ended with a score of 57-83, in their favor. At the same time, section two was held for 40 minutes in art. There were three participants in charcoal and three in dry color. In section three, the Huskies outshined Valley Lutheran by getting 7 of the 10 events. The final score was 121% to our 106%. Even though we were defeated, everyone had fun and are anxiously waiting for another meet. The audience was dominated by Hemlock supporters. The coaches all did a super job. The coaches for the academic fields were: Bill Agresta, Jim Blue, Mary Dennis, John Luebkert, Bruce Sutton, and Bob Taylor. The coaches for the events section were: Carolyn Hubbard and Elinor Mull. Hopefully, next year we will have more meets with somewhat different results. 80 Point Winners: Linda Alaniz—Girls Trio Laura Belisle—Comm.-Arts (1st) Mark Bohlen—Boys Quartet Mike Butcher—Potpourri Leonard Butko—Boys Quartet Denise Emery—Art (3rd) Cathy Gerken—Chemistry (2nd) Ann Gorney—Biology (1st), Interp.-read (2nd) Theresa Grzesiak—Word-O-Clock (2nd) Heather Hammond—Word-O-Clock (1st) Amy Hubbard—Vocal Solo (2nd), Girls Trio Bob Hutfilz—Potpourri. Although being smaller than most of the teams this year, aggressiveness was the key to turning the season around to make it a successful year. After suffering losses to undefeated MacArthur, Conference Champ’s, Frankenmuth and title contender Millington, the players vowed they would never lose again. The six straight convincing victories were led by a crushing defense that only gave up a season average of 2.8 yds. per carry and an average of only 30 yds. per game. All season only 5 touchdowns were scored by rushing. The opponents paid the full price for every yard with the Carrollton game (Homecoming), an outstanding example. This season, the offense worked like a well oiled machine. The close friendship on the offensive line showed its worth as the Huskies executed their plays crisply and with confidence and precision. Coach Wallace received many comments of the team's excellence throughout the year. 95 J.V. Football Back Row (L. to R.): Coach Bob Taylor, Assistant Coach Jim Blue. Hemlock 9th and 10th grade wrestlers were also champions of the 9th and 10th grade tournament. 109 The original weight room contained only a universal machine. Two years ago, a few coaches organized a student project to pay for some free weights. Since then the updated weight room has provided a place for athletes to improve their overall strength and conditioning. No matter what sport, whether male or female, weight training helps prevent injuries by strengthing not only the muscles, but also the tendons and ligaments. If an injury does occur, the weights can be used to speed the recovery process. Serious weight- training demands self- discipline and sound nutritional practices. The Sport of Weights Mark Chapin benchpressing. Bob Seeber is shown here squatting 430 lbs. at the state competition. Bob won the deadlift championship in the 181 lb. division (his weight 171) at the Michigan State High School Powerlifting Championship with 485 lbs. He also placed 4th overall in the meet, (which also Included the benchpress). The meet included 212 competitors and was the largest prep meet in the midwest. Bob was coached by Andy Huegel of Saginaw. no Parent’s Night at Hemlock Football parent's night was sponsored by the Pom Pon Squad before the last home game against Birch Run. It’s held annually for the varsity team to honor the athletes parents for their support, time and guidance. For washing uniforms, rewarming late dinners and staying up late in the cold. Driving sometimes long distances to non-conference games. Unfortunately, sometimes driving to a doctor or hospital for an injury and paying the bill. For all this we thank our parents. It is also held for the sports of wrestling, volleyball and boys and girls basketball with various sponsors, sometimes the cheerleaders. in Chariots of Fire H O Carrollton 99 24 E-Garber 78' 4 44M Swan Valley 93 30 Bullock Creek 95 28 Millington 90 32 Birch Run 111 12 Frankenmuth 92 41 Invitationals St. Louis 2na Birch Run 3rd St. Charles 2nd Clare 1st Ferris 4th M.S.U. 4th This year's Girls Track Team was the best team in Hemlock track history. Trackmen Second in Conference The Huskies had a successful track season this year with a final record of 6 and 1 and captured 2nd place in the conference. The Huskies were led by a powerful sprint team and were backed up by Hemlock's traditionally strong field events and long distance crew. The Huskies had many exciting track meets this year as the scores remained close throughout the meets and in many cases the last events decided who would win. A season milestone was the defeat of Bullock Creek. Conference Champs for the last two years. At the St. Charles Invitational, we captured a 1st place trophy. It was a very happy event as it was the first, 1st place trophy In more than 10 years. The team was led by commanding 1st place finishes in the discus, shotput and mile relay team. The Huskies 1982 JV baseball season had a terrific start, winning six in a row and nine of the first ten. Then their winning came to a halt, as they lost their last seven In a row. Some consolation can be found in the fact that six of ten of their losses were only by one run. Leading hitters for the season were Jeff Gosen. Paul Stevenson, Rob Freier, and Tom Neuenfeldt. Leading pitchers were Tom Neuenfeldt and Brian Nalevayko. They ended their season with a 12-10 record under the fine coaching of Mr. Pacholke. 117 Softball Isn’t for Softies. Each coach gave the MVP award for their sport. Sometimes an MVP Award is chosen strictly by vote of the team, or points earned like in track or sometimes the coach himself makes the decision. Coaches commented that referees have said they would ref our school sports anytime because our sportsmen hold themselves in such high esteem and behave maturally and like sportsmen and gentlemen. The athletes were told that they don’t realize how much they give to all the parents. It would have been a long winter without sports. The banquet is sponsored annually by the Sports Boosters. 121 All Sports Trophy The Hemlock Huskies have captured the 1981-82 Tri-Valley All-Conference Trophy, symbolic of overall athletic supremacy versus league schools. Hemlock amassed 148 total points to outdistance Essexville-Gatber, with 144 points, to win the prestigious traveling trophy. Frankenmuth was 3rd with 117; Swan Valley, 4th, 106; Bullock Creek, 5th, 93; Birch Run, 6th, 91; Millington, 7th, 73; and Carrollton, 8th, 62. The Huskies won outright league titles in Golf, Girls Cross Country, Boys Basketball and Girls Track, while sharing the Boys Cross Country crown with Garber. We also won 2nd places In Football and Boys Track. The Huskie athletic program is funded entirely by the Hemlock Sports Boosters. Hemlock was fortunate to again have an athletic trainer. Although, she could only stay for the first semester, she was Irreplaceable. She administered first aid and physical therapy and monitored the recuperation process to make sure the athletes were ready to return to athletic competition as quickly as possible. Carol Glover Athletic Trainer In appreciation to the Hemlock Boosters, the student body of Hemlock High School would like to thank the Boosters for a Super job In helping to support our athletic program and other programs which you have been asked to support. The budget for 1981-1982 was $90,000, and it would not have been possible for us to have a sports program without the help and total support of the Hemlock Boosters. We started the year with the possibility of not having athletics, due to lack of funds, We ended the year with the “All Sports Award from the league. One of the best years in the history of Hemlock. The Boosters in turn would like to thank the athletes for all the effort they put into their sports, the dedication and good sportsmanship. The Boosters are proud of the athletes. The Boosters feel the athletes worked hard and lived up to the faith they placed in them when they sponsored the sports program. It was a hard year to earn the money, but the community support made the Boosters a success. The long hours spent waiting for pictures to arrive, layouts to be done, copy sheets to come in was finally over. Now, the only time spent is the months of anticipation and nervousness waiting to see how the final book will turn out and hoping that all of the time spent working on it with all of the misunderstandings and arguments was not wasted. And now that the book is completed, I hope it captured a certain event or sparked a memory that was special to you so that it will be preserved for many years to come. And lastly. I close this note with a large sigh of relief buf also with one of regret. It has been truly a pleasure working with the yearbook staff to help create this book, and I hope that you will enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed being a part of it.
