Miss Kossayda is the most important person as far as the yearbook is concerned. She has been the advisor for six hard, frustrating, and yet enjoyable years. When asked why she remains being the advisor, and having such a tough job, she simply replies, Well if I didn't have it to do I would really miss it. Being the advisor of the yearbook isn't all Miss Kossayda does, she also teaches five hours of art classes. These classes are Art I, Drawing and Painting I, Drawing and Painting II, Drawing and Painting III, and Commercial Art. Having these classes, alone, means spending lots of time out of school just to correct papers. Yet, Miss Kossayda spends lots of time helping on the construction of the yearbook; setting up displays for plays, open house, and the bulletin board In the cafeteria; and going to meetings and art exhibits so that she can supply her students with many creative ideas. So what can we say, but thanks Miss Kossayda for all that you have done! The Yearbook Staff 1979 4 Zimes We Shared 9 As We Paraded Down Memory Cane ... This year's homecoming parade had ten floats. Businesses and churches of our community entered their floats in the float contest, along with those of the High School classes and organizations. Steve Root, the student council president, made arrangements for the parade to travel down M-46 — the first time in years. The Junior float took first place in the float contest, the Methodist Church won second, and F.F.A. was given a third place. The Huskie band played the homecoming theme in the parade. All of this made the parade a bigger and more enjoyable one then usual. 11 We Showed Our Spirit ... The homecoming activities began Friday, October 20, with a pep assembly In the gym. Murph handed Steve Root, student council president, the envelopes containing the results of the homecoming election. The court and the crowd waited in suspense while Steve slowly opened the envelope. Finally he read the list of names. Steve Baumann and Michelle Wise were elected 1978 homecoming King and Queen. Upon hearing the announcement, Michelle's fellow cheerleaders gathered around her, almost knocking her over In the excitement. The pep assembly ended with the school song. At Zke Assembly And Qame Bullock Creek provided a stiff challenge for our Huskies on Homecoming night in a rough and difficult game. Hemlock came out on top with a score of 20-17. The Huskies had a mediocre first half and were down 10-7 at halftime. They came out fired up for the second half and blitzed Bullock Creek for two quick touchdowns. The defense stifled the Lancers the rest of the way doing a superb job. 13 We Swayed Jn Zke Music Of Slectra Cigkt FRONT ROW (I. to r.): King Steve Baumann, Queen Michelle Wise, and former queen Bonita Roggow. For the dance, the gym was decorated by the Junior Class to go along with the theme. There was a long and winding road on which the 1978 Queen Michelle, King Steve, their court and the class representatives walked, as Grand MarshalT Steve Root announced them. Michelle received a dozen red roses and Steve was presented with a silver mug. The queen's court — Val Bryan, Jodi Eckstorm, and Brenda Gulliver — all received a rose. King's attendants were Rob Beyersdorf, Dave Schafer, and Bob Vukovich. This was held on October 21, a date to remember. 15 £fya.- 2up CPj ycfyis o l , ak ,OA3 Zhe Central Administration . . She was hired on August 15, 1957. At that time she assumed responsibility for all the secretarial work needed by the school district. Lawrence Gariglio, superintendent, described Mrs. Nothelfer, in THE HEMLOCK AND MERRILL MONITOR-HERALD, as a super secretary . He went on to say that she was extremely conscientious; and that her attention to detail made her indispensible. THE MONITOR-HERALD quoted Mrs. Nothelfer from her letter of resignation as saying; I have enjoyed my twenty years as an employee of the Hemlock School District and know I shall miss the close association and good relationship I have had with so many wonderful people. We, the students, say thank you, Mrs. Nothelfer. 19 High School Administration Keeps School Running Smoothly Lawrence Baumann Principal Glenn Rick Assistant Principal, Athletic Director Maureen Murphy Secretary Joan Rivard Secretary People Helping With Our Plans Judy Shearer Counselor Jim Sheltraw Counselor Jane Swarthout Secretary (Second Semester) NOT PICTURED: Rosemary Smith Secretary (First Semester) Bea Wallace Librarian Irene Miller Library Aide BELOW: Students get career information from the M.O.I.S. computer program. After the corn was harvested and stored Mr. Cook sent some members to the state and national conventions. At the state convention the delegates from all over Michigan voted on new and existing policies of the Future Farmers of America organization. At the national convention delegates from all all over the nation were present. President Carter and Mr. Paul Harvey were present at this convention to talk to these delegates. In the early spring the F.F.A. sponsored the donkey basketball game which pitted the F.F.A. against the high school teachers, and the varsity cheerleaders against the volleyball team. The teachers and the cheerleaders won their games and then played each other. The cheerleaders ended up as the ultimate victors. The three act comedy centered on a big Football Game between the Central Frogs and the Northview Nomads. Sam Pennywinner, coach of the Frogs, found his job riding on the outcome of the game. He was not too disturbed, however, because he was determined to win. Suddenly his son Buzz, who played on the Frog team, became sick. Then, Spook Mullins, the star fullback of the team, was infured. Sam Pennywinner's hopes to win were ruined because he was their last hope for the Frogs to win. But the game was not lost due to Peggy Pennywinner, who took Buzz's position on the field secretly, and won the game for the Frogs. Director ................ Student Director ........ In addition, Mary was a member of the National Honor Society in her junior and senior years; she was the student representative for the cheerleaders her senior year; she has been a cheerleader all through high school; and she was a member of the track team in her sophomore, junior, and senior years. After graduating from Hemlock, Mary plans to attend Ferris State College and major in medical technology. The salutatorian of the 1979 graduating class is Bob Vukovich. Bob graduated with a 3.875 grade-point average. Bob has participated in football and basketball for four years, track and tennis for one year, yearbook for one year, and he was in the Junior and Senior plays. Bob's hobbies are creative writing, reading, and playing all kinds of sports. Bob, who was the senior class president, received awards for Biology I, physics, college English writing, Midland Daily News All-Area Football award for quarterback, and a National Merit Scholarship award. Bob plans to attend Michigan Tech, after graduation and major in chemical engineering. After college. Bob would like to get a job in some kind of science, and later in life thinks that he might like to go into politics. Class Of '79 JCeads Zhe Way 106 CLASS OFFICERS (I. to r.): Michelle Wise, vice- president; Julee Phillips, secretary; Bob Vukovich, president; Rob Beyersdorf, treasurer. Cream Of Zhe Crop Robert Beyersdorf Mary Czymbor Debbie Eberling Paul Hilbrandt Kim Kern Grant Mayer Barb Pretzer Tim Rivard Eileen Wiechmann Jim Zietler 107 Our foreign friends There were three foreign exchange students at Hemlock High this year. The first to arrive was Ismael Collazos from Bogota, Colombia. He stayed with Mr. and Mrs. George Smith at 3805 Fehn Road. Ismael enjoyed sports. His favorites are basketball, swimming, baseball, and tennis. Ismael has two sisters and one brother in Colombia. During his stay in the United States he went to New York with Jarle Gjerdalen. They enjoyed the big city. Jarle Gjerdalen joined us next. He made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Birt Rogers at 3838 N. Hemlock Road. Jarle has one sister at home in Honefoss, Norway. Sports ranked high among his favorite activities. His favorite sports are basketball and skiing. Jarle was a member of our ski team. Another activity he enjoys is reading. The only female exchange student at Hemlock High during the 1978-1979 year was Paulina Estrella from Monica, Equador. After graduating from Hemlock, Paulina plans to go to a university. Her goal after leaving Hemlock High is to be either a systems engineer or an English teacher. Her stay at Mr. and Mrs. Crowford Lindsay at 18464 Nelson Road in St. Charles, and the many new friends at Hemlock made her stay a very enjoyable experience. graduates Of ’79 The Seniors began their final year by selling seat cushions and working in the concession stand at football games. Later they sold hot-n-cold mugs to earn more money for their trip to Cedar Point. They brightened the dull winter months by attending the Winter Blitz, sponsored by the Saginaw Department of Recreation. The Seniors won the pep jug for their skit presented at the pep assembly marking the finale of Spirit Week . They showed their acting ability on a larger scale when they presented the Senior Play in March. It was entitled They Run in Our Family and was directed by Mr. Fisher. The Seniors began their trip by renting the Y.M.C.A. on the night of May 29. Everyone enjoyed themselves by swimming, playing handball, pool, basketball, and other sports. The best part was being with friends; the worst part was leaving for Cedar Point at 6 a.m. after being up all night. Of course, special mention must go to Mr. Blue and Miss Darland, who were class advisors. The senior trip was a great success and the help of the advisors made the going easier. The year was culminated by graduation, held on Sunday, June 3. Elmer Schiefer of Zion Lutheran Church, Hemlock. Two hymns were sung by Mary Sherman and Judith Zastrow. The sermon of Rev Schiefer brought out the thought that one thing is sure when the tassel is moved, we are still children of God. Before the benediction was said everyone sang How Great Thou Art. 124 graduation: Zke Significant Suent The first annual outdoor graduation was held on the football field on Sunday, June 3, 1979, at 2 p.m. Rev. Two hours after leaving the Y, the seniors were off to Cedar Point. The trip started at 6 a.m. Wednesday morning and ended when the chartered buses arrived back in Hemlock at 11:45 p.m. on Wednesday night. In spite of the long schedule, everyone enjoyed themselves. Not even the rain dampened the senior's spirit and enthusiasm. Sditor’s Sign Off BiinsNft TrfiwiS I would like to thank all of my friends who helped me in the construction of this book. There was a lot of hard and laborious work involved in the making, but I feel that the outcome was well worth it. For now the '78-'79 school year is captured in' ink and paper so that it can be eternally re-lived in our minds. Finally I would like to say that I worked on this book for the entire student body, but I must say that I did it mostly for my fellow '79 graduates. As a closing statement I wish to say, May we never be strangers, as long as we both shall live! 139 ■ r‘iv'H• H?j f■ • U:!v‘j|;. y Mm si 11«; l 1 ’f-H I • I h!
