We have Worked very hard on this annual and We hope that you will enjoy the results of our ettorts. We also would like to thank you tor your cooperation, without which thisfannual could not have been published. Enjoy and treasure this Vigilante. it is yours. DEDICATION AMSEL GREENE MISS GREENE The Vigilante for l958 is dedicated with respect and admiration to our Latin and Word Clues teacher, Miss Amsel Greene. Miss Greene, mindful of the need of students for expanding their vocabularies and their command of the English language, developed a unique course of study she called Word Clues. Since there were no suitable textbooks on this subject she wrote her own. A measure of the success of this undertaking is to be found in the high ranking of Helena High students in various scholarship and college entrance examinations. During her career in Helena, Miss Greene has taught in all five High Schools. Her first assignment was in the old stone building on Warren Street, now used as a Naval Training Center. She moved to what was then the new High School on Rodney Street when it was opened in l935 only to be closed in October because of the damage caused by the earth- quakes. Until the school could be rebuilt, classes were temporarily held in railroad chair cars. Now after only three years in the Helena Senior High School which was finished just in time for the 1955-1956 school year, Miss Greene is resigning to devote her time to the teaching of adults in her chosen field of word culture. We of the Vigilante staff proudly dedicate our Annual to a devoted, honored and revf ered teacher and friend. PAGE FIVE ONE GF OUR DAYS The Honor Society luncheon given by the Exchange Club. We, the class of 1958, as very young, green freshmen entered the halls of the old HHS in the fall of 1954, when 250 of us got off to a good start by electing class officers: Bud Glas- by, president: Breck Howard, vice-president: Madalyne Casebolt, secretary: Sharon Sangray, treasurer and Martin Welch, representative. Iudy King Howard and Karen Anderson were chosen as our first Princess Candidates, Iudy winning. We surely were proud of her and we felt that we had a real place in Helena High School. In May 1955, we entered our first Vigilante Parade and since we had the most prize-win- ning floats we were awarded the Wahl Cup. That brought to a happy end our care-free freshman year. We began our sophomore year in the new high school. We were still the youngest so it didn't seem as if we had made much progress. This year we elected Duane Laible as our president: Don Braun, vice-president: Diane Liedle, secretary: Verna Norling, treasurer and Dick Shope, representative. Football claimed Bud Glasby, Breck Howard, Spike Moe and Spud McCullough. Iim Child made the varsity basketball team and Steve Barnes, Iim Richeson, Bob Sewell, Frank Stephenson, Larry Michaelson and Don Nichwander, the wrestling team. Unlucky Ianuary 13 was the date of our Friday the l3th Sophomore Dance. As big juniors, we got the year started by electing our class officers. Bob Redpath led us as president, with Chuck Thomas as vice-president: Sue Clarke, secretary: Verna Norling, treasurer and lim Richeson, representative. Sue Clarke and Barbara Holland were our candidates for Princess Vigilante that year. April 13, 1957 was the date of our Iunior Prom. The theme of our Prom was Moonglow, and it was the first dance to be held in our new gym. ln the fall of '57 we came back as mighty seniors ready to run the school. Under the leadership of Bob Mann, president: Ted Stoneberg, vice-president: Claire Hendrickson, sec- retary: Betty Blenkarn, treasurer and Dave Carlson, representative we got off on our best foot. The first order of business was the Senior Barn Dance. We carried off a rip-roaring one. The football team took second place honors in the state. Spud McCullough also got an All- American Award. Verna Norling was given the DAR Award with Sue Clarke and Io Dye as runners-up. Our Class has several distinctions which can never be duplicated. First we are the first Class to go through the new Helena Senior High School. We also are the last class to have four years of real high school. And we are the last class to have gone to the old high school when it was a high school. For these things at least we should be remembered. Mrs. Hartzog, Mr. Henry, and Mrs. Williams are our sponsors. PAGE NINE SENICDR BARN DANCE Have you ever felt like a scare cr ow? PAGE THIRTY-SIX CLASS OF '59 Charles Marshall, president: Al Dougherty. vice president: Iacquelyn King. treasurer: Charlene Holland. secretary: Thomas Allen. representative. We, the class of 59 entered the halls of HHS in the fall of '56, just two years ago all set to show those juniors and seniors just what a fine and prom- ising class we were. We immediately began to show our fine qualities by falling out of the desks every time the bell rang, and showing other traits which marked us as unique and more than promising. To start the year out we elected Max Baucus, Sue Thompson, Carol Cooper, Bev Holshue and Clayton Linebarger, class officers. Everything and everybody were new to us but we were still determined to show them and after several adjustments We did better. Our Sophomore Dance was the best ever. Loads of kids danced to the music of Bob C1ark's orchestra and really enjoyed themselves. Kay Cooney became crown princess to rule over the student body for a year and a day. Many ot our boys lettered in football, wrestling and track. And so through our Sophomore year to our junior year. Chuck Marshall, Al Dougherty, Charlene Holland, Jacque King and Torn Allen were chosen as the leaders of our class. Margie Anderson was elected Princess Vigilante giving the class of 59 the distinction of having a princess both of their years at the Senior High. Athletic-minded members in our class again participated in football, bas- ketball, wrestling, and track. As Iuniors We presented one of the best proms ever given. In the Spring a Young Man's Fancy Was our theme. Kay Glover was this year's DeMolay Sweetheart. Mrs. Goodhart, Mrs. McCarthy and Mr. Stafford are our sponsors. PACE THIRTY-SEVEN Caught again! We, the class of '60 entered the halls of HHS in the fall of 1957, thinking that we would be able to set the whole world, not only the school, on fire. Soon though, our great plans were proved not so great as we found that we weren't the only class in the whole school and that there were some others who thought that they were just as good as we thought we Were. But since then we have done many things to make us more noticeable. Our first duty to the school was to elect our class officers to lead us through our first year. They were: Conn Norling, president: Karen Tichenor, vice-pres identp Connie Spurlock, secretary: Phyllis Schimpf, treasurer and Tom Ken- ney, representative. As Princess Candidates we nominated Karen Tichenor and Carol Farris. We have been active in our first year of high school, many in athletics. We also made up a large percentage of Philharmonic, Girls' Ensemble, Boys' Ensemble, Mixed Ensemble, Band and Orchestra. We also have members in Latin Club, French Club, and since this spring, we proudly have seven members in 3-7-77's. Another great honor that has been bestowed upon our class is the Mr. HHS title which was awarded to Dave Didriksen. We participated in the Vigilante Parade for our first time, and had many prize-winning floats. Well, maybe we didn't set the school on fire but we did get a good start and we have two more years left to do it. Our sponsors are Mr. Annala, Mrs. Matulys, and Miss Morse, PAGE FORTY FIVE IN MEMORIAM Y . ,ar I fn. Several other means were tried, but none of them were success- ful in fulfilling the need for something to do. ln 1924, a conference of the Iunior and Senior classes was called and the Parade was de- cided upon as a means of entertainment. The parade has been a great success from the first and has been held every year, except during the War. On the first Friday in May at 12 o'clock, the cavalcade begins winding its way down Last Chance Gulch. The prizes which are donated by local merchants are awarded at a dance that night. The Roberts Cup, reward for the class with the highest percent of participation and the Wahl Cup for the class with the most prize winning floats are also awarded then. This year they were both awarded to the senior class. The Vigilante Parade has rounded out a third of a century, and may it go on and round out the other two thirds. Great Falls Band played here on Ianuary 28. They played one concert in the gym for the students and in the evening they gave another performance for the general public. The Helena Senior High Band returned the visit on March 4. They also played two con- certs. At each they performed the note worthy feat of having at least one per- son fall off the risers during each of the concerts. In the line of more usual events, the band gave a Winter concert on Fri- day, February 28. They played during the basketball and football games and performed at the Class AA and Class C Basketball Tournaments. According to tradition, they also led the Vigilante Parade. On Friday, April l8, the solos and ensembles went to the District Music Meet and on the day after, the whole band competed. Several were sent to the State Music Meet in Missoula. The complete band played at several pep assemblies and the Pep Band played at the others putting on one entire pep assembly by themselves. An- other new section of the band is the Varsity Band. STATE BUNNEBS-UP I-lelena's Crimson Bengal team for 1957 proved to be the finest grid squad since the Ben- gal team of 23 years ago. Coaches Hansen and Cohn turned out a team which possessed an over-all record of 7 wins and 2 losses and turned in a 6-1 record in conference play. To begin the successful 1957 season, the Bengals trounced Havre 26-0, and then were edged by Butte 12-'7 in non-conference tilt. The scrappy Bengals took it out on Livingston 47- 6, in their first conference game. Hansen's crew started a string of wins with the Livingston game and followed with a 20-12 Win over highly touted Great Falls, thumped Anaconda 18- O, fought over Bozeman 21-13, and Walked over Kalispell 26-6. Helena's title hopes were then dimmed by a 33-12 loss to vastly improved Billings. The Bengals finished the season with a hard fought Win over Butte Central 13-6. The Bengal's season record of 6-1 was good for a second place tie with Butte. The Mis- soula Spartans won the Class AA Championship.
