■■ ■ ' ■ m LEJJiiCOUNTy PUBLIC LIBRARY ' . ■ . ' I -s 1776 Independence jicentennia! Bulletinboard by Mrs. ames Mrs. Differding. This was the first flag of the United States, raised on January 1, 1776 as the standard of the Conti- nental Army led by George Wash- ington. In July, of the same year, the United States declared their inde- pendence from Great Britain. Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declara- tion of Independence to show Brit- ain how the United States felt to- ward them. Supposedly, the Liberty Bell was rung after the Declaration was read. 1976 SENECA Hebron High School Hebron, Indiana Dedication W(! tho Senior class of 1976 dedi- cate our yearbook to Mr. Phillip Lawson, a devoted teacher and an even more inspiring yearbook advi- sor. Since this is our bicentennial our yearbook is more colorful than any other and to show our apprecia- tion we would like to dedicate it to Mr. Lawson, the person who made it all possible. We dedicate this to you from the greatest class ever lo th(! greatest teacher ever!! Introduction A comparison of the past with the present. Hebron school around the turn of the country and NOW. ' !!; ' iir-. As the 1975-76 school year comes to a close we SENIORS look for- ward to the end of our high school grind. Finally!! As we leave we have tried to leave as accurate an account as possible. As our part of the nation wide bi- centennial celebration we have se- lected dates of important events, na- tional, state, and local, to com- memorate on the division pages. We have also filled some blank spaces wath eagles, and cannons in a patri- otic gesture. Our yearbook is illustrated with color on the division and patrons pages in celebration of the bi- centennial. We would like to thank the Athletic Department for contrib- uting the largest amount of money, and a special thanks to all the other classes and clubs for making the color possible. Only the Art Club German Club prevented this edition of the Seneca from being an all school project. There are some old pictures of Hebron and Hebron School and we would like to thank Mrs. Edith Viant for trusting them to us. ■ Xf 1787 A Constitution Dan [ohn iiKvavs si ' i ' tn to svr KYE I EYE?!?!? One of the most important things they did was to clean the school grounds which in itself is a huge undertaking. Also for Homecoming they decorated the store windows uptown which unfor- tunately meant they also had to wash them. For a money making project they sold apples during lunch hour. John Taylor and Dawn Donaldson, our two Junior Editors, did make it through one year but might not another. Last but not least an unusual thank-you to an unusual staff for working as hard as they did as long as they did. Drama Club Now That the Children are Grown was the Drama Club ' s spring play. It was a drama about the lives of people whose marriage disintegrated and the children suf- fered. The unfortunate couple was Bill (Curt Taylor) and Charlotte (Lynn Shipley) and one of the suf- fering children was Chad (Todd Cooley). The Fall play was a comedy. The program began at 6:25 with the presentation of the flag by the American Legion. The J.V. played a good game winning by a score of 57-38. Between games, the presentation of queen candidates and court took place in which Gail Robertson was crowned Queen. Di- rectly preceeding the Varsity game was the announcing of the players, coaches, managers, and cheer- leaders and the giving of flowers to the parents. At half time of the Var- sity game, the pom pom girls per- formed. The Varsity defeated the Rensselaer Bombers 77-69. Follow- ing the game the Booster Club and Honor Society sponsored a sock- hop. Prom Cal e What an exciting Post Prom. Sharon Steffel, Dawn Cassel, and Greg Stalbaum Prom Prom: The 1975 Prom as usual was a great success. The theme for the evening was Stairway to Heaven. It was exciting to see everyone in their formal attire, but strange to see them without their jeans. The reading of the will and prophesy was one of the many climaxes of the evening and everyone got a few good laughs. Debbie Stalbaum and Larry Cooley were crowned queen and king of the affair. After more dancing and re- freshments the highlight of the eve- ning came— the post prom. There were some problems getting out of our good clothes and back into our jeans but everyone finally made it. At the post prom we had the choice of either bowling, playing pool, or staying by the food. Then for some there was the fun of going some- where the next day and dying of ex- haustion. The prom was enjoyed by all and again pulled off successfully. 1886 Hebron Incorporated The year 1886 showed a decHne in the age of the cowboys. The last frontier was being settled until America had no more lands to be developed. 1886 also marked the time that Hebron was incorporated. In this year the flag contained thirty- eight stars on its field of blue. The old picture on this page shows the result of a large snowstorm in down- town Hebron, date unknown. Their only losses were a 13-16 deci- sion to Crown Point and a 22-23 thriller at the hands of Washington. Their most convincing victory was over LaCrosse 46-6. Laurie Fisher was high scorer and leading reboun- der. Kathy Tangeman was only one rebound behind Laurie. Tina Cooley led the team in field goal percentage with 35%. Girls Varsity Basketball Hebron has had a tradition of fielding weak girls ' teams and the 75-76 edition was no exception. The girls improved on last year ' s record by gaining victories over La Crosse, Westville. and Kouts. The Kouts win (by two points) was the highlight of the season. The ' 76 Hawks provided plenty of fireworks and (!xcitement while having a Star Spangled sea- son. The team rolled to one of the finest seasons of any Hebron team. The first big coup was the South County Tourney with a bonus prize of the KEG. After a nail-biter against Morgan they rolled over Boone Grove and LaCrosse to cap- ture the Porter County Tourney. Only in PCC did the team falter, tying for second with a 6-2 record. In the sectional the Hawks mas- tered Rensselaer and Lowell for the second time. North Newton man- aged to stay close for six minutes, but the Hawks flew past them in route to the sectional crown. In the regional the Hawks put 6 points on the board in the last 31 seconds to best a stubborn Frontier team by 7. The tall Hawks ended a fine season by bowing to a taller La- fayette Jefferson team by 12 points. Season scoring leaders were Phil Searle, Dick Rust, and Bob Pass. However, the last part of the season was less than a great success as they finished with a 7-7 record. Jeff Patz led the team in scoring and rebounding. The seventh grade got started on the right track with a one point win over Demotte Christian. The young team was then derailed as Lowell doubled the score on them. The damage was so extensive they couldn ' t get rolling the remainder of the season and closed with a 1-11 record. High hopes!! Where ' s the ball? Duug Earl. Gary Asher. Keep your eyes on the bouncing ball! Scoll Wil- son, loc Delli Colli. JV Baseball Coach Blank ' s fine leadership gave the J.V. a good season, losing only their first game to Morgan in a 5-6 loss. Later on in the season we avenged our loss by beating them in another close game of 4-3. Playing Boone Grove twice was 2 easy wins. In the first game against B.G. we won 19-2 and the second game 11-8. Jr. High Baseball Taxi!!!! Alan Kirpatrick Watching Waiting. Alan Asher Better luck next time!?! Shutouts were gained over La- Crosse and Westville with the Hawks scoring 5 each time for their only victories. With a little luck two one run losses (Washington Mor- gan) could have been turned into wins. The ball didn ' t bounce right and the team finished with a 2-6 record. Baseball The spring season produced two wins (Boone Grove and LaCrosse) and a tie with Gary Emerson as darkness prevailed before either team could score that third run. A regular season shutout by Han- over Central was duplicated in the sectional. The final record was 2Vi wins against 5 ' losses. During the fall season, the team showed a slight improvement over the spring record. A tie was gained against Morgan while Washington, Wheeler and Westville fell to the Hawks attack. One run (5-6) losses to Kouts and Hanover kept the Hawks from a winning season as they fin- ished with a 3 ' 4-4 ' A record. Dick Rust lead the team in hitting with a 435 average. Bob Pass did most of the pitching posting a 3-2 record and an earned run average of 3.26. Hebron Sireiiker incognito! Donnie Hough Open moulh-in.si rt fool. Dimny Largi ' nl Strike 3! The team ran over all oppo- sition in the P.C.C. for a 6-0 record. The only dual meet loss was to an excellent River Forest team for a 9-1 record. Frustration was the name of the game for the big meets, however. The sweet fruit of victory was taken away by a disqualification in both the P.C.C. meet and Hebron In- vitational as the Hawks had to settle for second. A second place finish was also recorded in the Lowell Invitational. Duane Peregrine set a school record in the high hurdles of 15.6. Dick Rust ran the 880 in a school record time of 2:02.2. The mile relay team of Charles Stone, Larry Cooley, Tom Steinhilber, and Dick Rust also covered the oval in the record time of 3:34.6. Bob Thurner, Larry Cooley, Tom Steinhilber, and Dick Rust com- bined in the distance medley for a record 8:20.9. The powerful Hawk squad was led in scoring by Dick Rust and Duane Peregrine. The last meet was the most exciting as the girls edged Washington 52-51. That victory gave them a 4-5 season record. Their ef- forts were culminated in a sixth place finish in the P.C.C. meet, where Annette Cervik placed sec- ond in the half mile run. Jill Bell lead the team in scoring. Jr. High Track Cross Country It ' s tough running a mile on one leg. Steven Ledferd Frank Straw shows true grit . One gust of wind and he ' ll be off. Mark Zuchowski The Jr. High track team posted a 1- 2 dual meet record: winning over Morgan and losing to Hanover Cen- tral and Kankakee Valley. In tri- angular competition the young Hawks managed a second and a third. The boys ran fourth in both the Hebron Invitational and PCC meet. The cross country team featured many of the same runners as track, with similar results. Dual meet com- petition netted one victory (Lowell 7th grade) in four runs. Hebron fin- ished in the middle of their only tri- angular meet. A strong performance by Frank Stra%v was good for third in the PCC, but Hebron still finished sixth. Cross Country Led by Dick Rust, Bruce Zuch- ovvski. and Bob Witt the Hawks couldn ' t get enough team depth to be a consistant threat. A losing sea- son (4-6) in dual meets was assured with a two point loss to Kouts. Their efforts were only sufficient for fifth in the North Newton and Kankakee Valley invitationals, and a seventh place finish at New Prairie. Even with a five second place perfor- mance by Dick Rust in the Porter County Conference meet, the team only placfHl fifth. That poor showing ended Hebrons seven year string of being conference champs or runnerups. What a run around! Dick Rust I ' m almost there!
