She opened our class to a better understanding of the outside world. So our Class of 1974-the one and only-would like to dedi- cate our one and only book, to the one and only you-Mrs. Shirley Roberts-Thanks. I TRODUCTIO These few paragraphs are to do nothing more than to introduce you to the new things that are go- ing on around the High School. Beginning with the happenings around the school, we have been attributed with three new teach- ers to the Hebron staff-Mr. Bai- ley, who calculates us with Chem- istryg Mrs. Differding, who stirs us in to the interest of Home-Ecg and Mrs. Matanich, who leads the youngsters to music. To change the decor of two of our rooms, namely the old Study Hall and the auditorium, new desks were piled to the ceiling awaiting their day to be placed in the new rooms. And speaking of the new rooms, everyone has been looking at the new gym and waiting . . . and waiting . . . and waiting . . . To celebrate the opening of our new school, we all eagerly awaited our very first Homecoming, con- sisting of a dance and Senior queen. Last, but not least, the greatest class entered their Senior year with their class mascot, Pherlin the Aardvark. In this select group of pictures, we first see Randy Als. displaying his prize win- ning bubble. Keep 'em blowing, Randy! Next we see John Wineland saluting and singing to his favorite song Bunsen Burner. At the bonfire, the cheerleaders were really swinging leg, swinging that is! But as some people say-Monkey see, Mon- key do! No one wished more to have the new gym done than the old volleyball play- ers. Right, Phyllis?! And do you believe that one day children came in and overran the school! The question to what is WHY? Debbie Cramer is caught with her mouth open again, saying AAH, what did you say? Here come the twirlers and pom-pom girls leading the way for sweet music. Kathy Kinne demonstrates her great taste of fifties clothing. What is it? It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a frog-A FROG-No it's SUPER PHERLIN!!!! 5 Y v Hey Mr. Blank-where's the cows and chickens you promised to show us? And you thought being married was no fun? 'X 4 JU IOR HIGH BA D The Pep Band helped to boost the team during home basketball games by playing rhythmic tunes to cheer by and keep the crowd alive. They also played the Star Spangled Banner before the Var- sity's home games. The group con- sists of volunteer members of the band class. 42 This year's Junior High Band was very active. They sold tumblers and raised enough money to buy three parade drums. In December they played when Santa came to town and had a caroling party. In February they played at the He- bron-Kankakee Valley Game. PEP BA D The Art Club again took aqstrong stand in helping the Booster Club and Cheerleaders in making props for the P.C.C. Tourney. Also they have been working all year on love lights, which they have been selling to individuals for 53.50. Also during the year they may en- ter their own projects into an art show. Tom Steinhilber, Lori Ay- lesworth are shown working on their art projects. ART CLUB Yells and screams led the Hebron Booster Club into a close second place at the Porter County Tourney, losing first by two points. The theme for the block, Keep on Truckin , was printed on the student's shirts. The game became quite close at times and the block put all their fingers and their ahs' into motion. The Big Wheelers rolled into action by imitating the other County School's mascots. But working for the tourney wasn't all the club and cheerleaders did. They also decorated halls and tried to revive the school's spirit, keep it, and throw it at the team before a ball game. The yell leaders also en- couraged the student body during spirit week and produced a fine four days of the romping 50's, lick 'em day, hats off day, and red and white day. 44 CLUB Drama Club The talent of the Drama Club was shown last year by two fine plays. The musical You're a Good Man Charlie Brown was a lot of fun for the actors, but also a lot of work as shown by Cheryl Blood and Betty Hough w working on Kevin Cutrell and Snoopy Sharon Jenks, so they looked like their parts. Songs were sung by Lucy Susan Stone, to Schroeder and the whole Charlie gang, Cfeaturing Patti and Snoopy on the old benchl. Bonnie Robers and Sha- ron Jenks hold a girl-to-dog talk to turn the lights off. l 46 The fall play, Lost Horizon, had the audience held in suspense, even the children were in aw when Bonnie, Gregg Daunora, and Gregg Price were putting on the trial performance. Shown at the night of the play were Scott Norris, and Wendy Shipley posing by the Great Buddah. In the spring the club planned for two one act plays. GAA The GAA sponsored by Ma Per- egrine led the officers and group into an active and fun year. The Seniors had a wild time initiating new members and they loved ev- ery minute of it! Jane, Cathy, An- nette, and Patty eagerly ate the cupcakes baked for them and then couldn't wait for more. Robbie Gericke led the sugary, chocolatey group in a can-can in front of the High School. Both volleyball teams did a fine job this year with the varsity leading the way to the K.V. Sectional and losing to them. Janet Wilson, Debbie Stalbaum, and Marie Schuster showed what it was like to be a VB member. The basketball team, still young in its years, fought hard but couldn't get ahead. Other activi- ties included sponsoring the Olympic games and going to the GAA Banquet in May. 48 49 ATIO AL HO OR SOCIETY The National Honor Society is a group of hard working students that must maintain a B average throughout the year. Also they must belong to a certain number of clubs. Some of the groups activ- ities this year included picking up leaves from Hebron citizen's yards, and sponsoring the Hebron Homecoming. Also the members have their own individual projects such as tutoring and visiting Se- nior Citizens. Danny Wagner is shown kissing his mother before the start of the River Forest Homecoming Game. 50 STUDENT COUNCIL Led by President Kathy Taylor, this years Student Council was very active. They started out the year by throwing a pool party. Next they added a new look to the baseball diamond by painting and repairing the bleachers. Lending a helping hand is Val Fisher and Patty Broughton. Each year the Council also sponsors our con- vocations, one of these being on Narcotics. Tom Steinhilber was one of the few boys who helped the grade school children cross the street and get home safely. Susan Strong was this year's delegate for Girl's State, at Indiana Uni- versity. There, Susan had a won- derful time enjoying many activi- ties and meeting new friends. Her alternate was Kathy Schne- kenburger. Susan also won the D.A.R. award, which is based on leadership, dependability, patri- otism, and service. Peggy Zeiber, Butch Welch, Mark Singleton, Joe Kuhn, Kathy Rayner, Cindy Wease, and Nora Ritter helped to make Miss Corbitt's days in the li- brary a little less hectic. a ! Q 52 HO OR l i A DRECOG ITIO S Steve Osburn was chosen to repre- sent Hebron High School this year at Boy's State. Dan Wagner served as alternate in case any- thing happened to Steve. Lynn Birky, Debbie Hargis, Cindy Fickle, Gayl fRileyJ Elam, Sharon Evans, Kathy Taylor, and Karen Gilson helped Mrs. Guillod and anyone else that they could in the office every school day. Out of the many Senior girls who took the test, Donna Sherman was the re- cipient of the Betty Crocker Homemaker award. This test ranged from everyday living questions to the hard nose facts of government. 53 The Hebron Home Economics Club was a new organization this year. Most people would remem- ber it as being the F.H.A. This club deals with helping the com- munity in certain ways. One thing they did was baby sit the children of parents attending the Hebron basketball games. They also baked cookies for the coke party after the River Forest game. Shown are some of the creative baking skills of a few Home Ee. members: Jamie Steffel-the bear, Stephanie Kirkpatrick-the heart, and Denise Urbas and Sha- ron Deal-the rabbit. 54 Jr. High Booster Club YZEHIU , I N g ff' ,- HH KP O The Jr Hlgh Booster Club, spon- sored by Mrs Harnach had an ac- tive flrst year The members col- lected donations for Tommy Wise at one game besides actively backing then' Jr Hlgh teams. They also provlded much noise and enthuslasm at the Porter County Tourney 55 SPANISH CLUB The X-mas party was quite a thrill for Spanish Club members this year held at Mrs. Franzman's home. They enjoyed eating Span- ish Food so much that they had dinner again at a Spanish restau- rant in Hammond. But eating isn't all the club did as shown by Jeff Good trying hard to write a report. The club also planned to see the plan Man of La Mancha in Valparaiso and have a progres- sive dinner. The German Club is an organiza- tion for old and new German stu- dents. This year many new mem- bers joined the clan including Curt Taylor, listening intently with his new set of ears, and Nora Ritter. Their activities of this year included going to German Town where they ate German foods and shopped in German stores. Also, later on in the year, they planned to have a German monopoly party and eat at a Ger- man restaurant. 57 RIFLE CL UB The Rifle Club this year got a slow start in practice shooting be- cause of no where to fire their arms. This year the club sold con- cessions at Hebron home basket- ball games as shown by Sharon Steffel fixing popcorn bags. Also, this year they sold magazines to raise money. During the Home- coming game they took on the job of Raising the Colors. 58 SCIENCE CLUB l I One of the smaller clubs in the high school was the Science Club. The few members planned on tak- ing two fields trips sometime dur- ing the year. One was to the Science and Industry Museum and the other was to Cook's Nuclear Power Plant. They worked on Science Fair projects that were judged in the middle of March. Greg Nethery and John Wineland record data and increase their sci- entific minds. SENECA TAFF The Seneca staff of 1974 has to be the hardest Working organization known. Even though this group gives the Hook 'Em sign, their aching muscles feel the fatigue of drudging through the snow, sleet, or rain to come to their meeting every Monday night. Conversa- tions form while completing rough drafts between Danny Wagner and Cindy Fickle, Kathy Kinne and Shelley Tysen, and Te- resa Hessling and herself. Jackie Riggs and Susan Strong, the year- book's two editors, make final cor- rections feven though there aren't manylj. 60 HA WKER TAFF The head of the Hawker staff was again Mrs. Gwin. This staff met after school to try and publish a monthly Hawker. This year they tried to make it more informative than in years past. They also tried to get student's opinions on cer- tain areas. The work is all type ...type...type...asshown by Wendy Shipley, Debbie Har- gis, and Shelley Tysen diligently working their fingers to the bone. bl PRO I The 1973 Prom was one to be re- membered. It was the first time for a Hebron prom to be held out- side the school and away from city limits. The Juniors of then, now Seniors, picked a beautiful loca- tion in which to hold their gay cel- ebration. This was at Jonynus Hall which set a wonderful back- ground for the theme, Bridge over Troubled Waters. Shown here are some of the activities the now departed Seniors shared in. Rolin Elam and Debbie Daunora accepted the title of King and Queen for the evening. Also I'm sure they will remember their great enthusiasm when they lis- tened to Janet Wilson reading the class prophecies. Chris Lintner and Stephan Cervic seem to be enjoying themselves. Susan had the pleasure of crowning the King and Queen. Lori Aylesworth is shown serving Joanie a glass of punch. 62 Part of the cross country team is shown resting after a hard run on the V.U.'s run- ning course. Pictured from left are Larry Cooley, giving his victory sign, Brian Bell, conversing with a Boone Grove Wolf, Mark Stokke, Mike Chapman, Chris Barker, and Bobby Witt. Mark Stokke, Mike Chapman and Rex Werner show off the new white uniforms while battling Washington for the basketball. While the baseball team gets ready, Coach Lord, Brian Bell, and Coach Matanich watch the other team. Bobby Thurner pulls at the air to help him get a winning jump. A THLETIC The Hebron Hawks baseball team won the PCC title for the fourth consecutive year with a 5-1 record. Coach Matanich's squad had only three returning lettermen, but steady play by first-year starters made the Hawks a contender from the beginning. This year's team had many close games, which wasn't traditional by past Hawk teams. The first game of the season found the Hawks scor- ing four runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Boone Grove 7- 6. Hebron had no problems the next two games as they defeated Washington 12-2 and Kouts 14-4. The Hawks then ran into trouble as Morgan defeated them 1-0 for the first Hebron loss in their last nineteen PCC games, extending over three years. Hebron then bounced back to knock off Han- over Central 10-9 in a hard fought contest. This victory left Hanover and Hebron in a tie for first. In the last game of the Round Robin, the Hawks knocked off Wheeler 13-11 and finished 5-1 for the year. Due to Hanover's loss to Boone Grove, the Hawks again had won the title. In the tourney, the Hawks again lost to Boone Grove 6-3, but this did not have l 64 BASEBALL any effect on the Conference standings. Senior Dan Wagner led the PCC in hitting for the second con- secutive year with a .542 average. He was also the RBI and Home Run leader and compiled a 2-0 pitching record. Sophomore Matt Hren and Senior Jeff Good also had fine years with .500 and .437 batting respectively. Junior first baseman Don Largent hit .421 and Senior catcher Randy Al- smeyer hit .350. Senior Rex Wer- ner had a great defensive year at third base with a 1.000 fielding percentage. Brian Bell played in- field with his usual adequacy and Steve Hallberg played a steady left field. Les Serles had a 1-1 pitching record, Mike Chapman was 1-0 with a .500 batting aver- age and Greg Stalbaum was 1-0. Lead foot fRexj makes the big move. Our baseball team attracts all age groups. By the showing of Se- niors, Juniors, Sophomores, Freshmen, and little Julie Chapman. Don Largent adds a ballet step to help him slug the ball. Brian throws a fast one. This gave the Hawks a near finished record of 12-7, not count- ing the sectional games. The He- bron team tied for second place in the conference with Boone Grove, losing to both Morgan and Wheeler during the season. The Hawks tallied another win in the South County Tourney by defeat- ing Kouts by two points in the last few seconds of an overtime. Unfortunately the team could not get up enough steam to over- whelm Morgan in the P.C.C. The Lord was with us all the way when we won the K.V. Sectional for the second straight year. And Mark said, Let there be light. Mike hits the rim for two. The Great Juggler Brian Bell bal- ances the ball. Aah? Help, Rex, he's trying to get me. A look of astonishment sweeps over the faces of the boys, as Coach Lord tells of his secret life. iQ CROSS COUNTRY After a slow start the Harriers came on strong to post a 9-3 dual record and win the Round Robin series for the fifth time in six years and the PCC Meet the third time in four years. The leading runner was Tom Steinhilber. Tom placed second in the conference meet and third in the Lake Cen- tral Invitational. Joining Tom in the scoring column were Steve Os- burn, Brian Bell, Larry Cooley, and Mark Stokke. Tom Schroeder ran well early in the season before developing shin splints. Dick Rust and Bob Pass came out for the team after the baseball season and ran sixth and seventh man in the conference meet. Others par- ticipating this season were Dan DeYoung, Chris Barker, Bob Witt, Louis Straw, and Mike Chapman. Three top runners for Hebron High, Steve, Mark and Larry, model their winning muscles. One Brian and three Tom's CRum- ford, Steinhilber and Schroederj try and get a running start, with Lowell Red Devils. Wg 69 TRA CK The Hebron track team did an all out good job this year and won six of their annual meets and two meets involving more than one other team. The Hebron relays drew a large crowd as usual, be- cause the Hawks had many boys with fine individual perfor- mances. Brian Bell received a trophy for scoring the most points throughout the season. He also went to the sectional for pole vaulting. Larry Cooley and Dick Rust went for their high jumping ability. To mention some other of our great deeds, we again won the Porter County Track Meet and Round Robin. Also we helped to win the Bi-County Meet, because Oregon Davis didn't come until the last race. In it we had a no. of lst places. Chapman in low hur- dles, Cooley in high jump, Bell in pole vault, and Hebron relay team in the mile relay. 70 Steve works hard to help the team get a placement. Mark makes a tremendous jump into the sand pile, hoping to out- do the next guy. Brian makes a leaping bound to get ahead. The younger Hawk team lost to Mor- gan in the lst game of their tourney, played in our new gym, but they didn't lose their enthusi- asm and went on to defeat other teams. Herb tries for two while Matt and Phil put on their breaks. l 74 FRESH M A The Hebron Freshman, under the mentoring of coach Dave Walker, suffered through a 3-9 season. The young Hawks stood 2-2 after four games and appeared to be on their winning ways. But five straight losses ended the coaches dream of a winning season. Wes Stokke lead the freshmen in scor- ing. With the experience gained in these games, the J. V. of next year should be a very good one. l l 75 fl' 77 JR. HIGH BA KET- BALL TAM This year's Junior High squads had some trouble winning games. The B team was unable to win any games and this was due to lack of size. Coach Schroeder's A team had the talent, but still l came up 1 game short of an even record.
