The Seneca Staff adopted a new yearbook format. The Seventh Grade section was omitted due to lack of space, and the fact that the Seventh Grade was moved into the elementary building. A special features section on the students and the teachers was created for the enjoyment of the readers. For variety the data under the senior pictures was changed from the majors and minors of each student to the signature and a verse about each senior. The data under the faculty pic- tures was also rearranged to include only the classes taught and the clubs sponsored by each faculty member. In the school program the modular system was established to give the students more individual study time. The new teachers who hopefully had a fine year at H.H.S. included Mr. Blank, Miss Corbitt, Mr. Fox, Mrs. Harnach, Mrs. Siegers, and Mrs. Nelson. The dress code was relaxed slightly giving the students a bit more freedom and individualism. All in all, the 1970-71 school year was a success at Hebron High, even though the seniors are glad it ' s all over!! ' ' One in a Million ' ' The Senior Class of Hebron High Dedicates this yearbook to a special guy Mr. Rutherford is his name The mad scientist of reknown fame. He tried his best to help us grow In thought and deed though we were slow. His patience and humor stayed to the end Thanks, Mr. Rutherford, you ' ve been a real friend. Juonito Finnerty is a prime example of a typical Hebron High School Se- nior with her good looks, charming personality, studious attitude, per- severence, and her love for learning. The serious manner in which she un- dertakes her academic work is ex- emplified OS she conscientiously pre- pares her shorthand assignment. Her yearning desire to be helpful and to serve her school is portrayed as she gives freely of her services in the of- fice. Of course, even Juanito cannot be business-like all day. Everybody has to have a little mischievous fun during the day, right Mr. Broughton? Here Juonito quiets her classmates as she proceeds to seorch for that secret something in Mrs. Gwin ' s desk. The day goes all too quickly for Juonito, but she leoves school happily with the understanding that she will be bock in her beloved paradise tomorrow. One minute he is lecturing about a map of Asia. Then, he is drawing checks on papers. Next, he consumes some prepared potion. Fi- nally, he searches through the trash can, determined to find something. Hmm . . . what is it about teachers that makes them so hard to explain? Do they know something we students don ' t know? The offensive power of the Hawks exploded as the team averaged over ten runs per gome and hit lofty .367. Defensively, the infield was outstanding and the outfield averaged less than two errors per gome. The team finished 8-2 with a tie for the Porter County Conference. There were several individual perfornv onces. Pot Murphy, o sophomore, shut out the Boone Grove teom twice and hod o sensotional earned run overage of .542. The first .500 hitter since 1967 was Mike Broughton, a sophomore, who wound up the leading hitter in the county hitting, .515. He hod more RBI ' s (19) and hits (17) than any player in Hebron history. Three other hitters who hit over .400 this season were Al Karnes, Sr. .412; Randy Bell Jr. .424; and Brian Bell, Fr. .412. The leading home run hitter in the conference was Mark Griffey, a junior, with four. Randy Bell was the leading doubles hitter in the P.C.C. with six two-bag- gers. Each and every individual on this team contributed to the fine effort. Pictured, Randy Bell waits patiently for the right pitch. Randy proctices his powerful cut with the bat. Dwight Scroggins scores big in every department. He ' s got the looks, per- sonality, and athletic talent of a chan pion. Notice the poise and grace that he possesses on the court and the deep concentration he exhibits while under- taking a shot. These ore some of the qualities that make Dwight an asset to Hebron High School and its basketball team. Hard Work Pays Off! Cheerleading is filled with glamour, laughter, fun, and thrills. But as with any task in life, it involves a lot of per- serverence and hard work. Just ask the dedicated Hawk cheerleader Robbie Gericke. She looks sharp in her uni- form as she puts some final touches on her hair. But behind the scenes, Robbie spends hours every week stretching, pulling, and reaching toward perfec- tion. It ' s worth every tedious minute though, right Robbie? Fine Flying Fellows! The Hebron Junior High track teom ran away with six victories and only one defeat this year. In the county meet, the team had a flashing first place finish. With their speed and po- tential, this team may represent Hebron in the Olympics. Keep running! Not only did they excel in their scholastic achievements, but they got involved in school and con munity activities. They literally worked on their hands and knees to help others. This fact is illustrated by Steve Dilley, Dick Nethery, and Randy Bell OS they industriously wash and wax one of the library tables. The club sponsored an environmental clean-up campaign. This involved a Don ' t Burn ' Em, Bag ' Em project of collecting leaves to prevent burning leaves and air pollution. They picked up the trash around the school, painted trash cans, and collected bottles, tin cans, and newspapers for recirculation. Also they used their artistic talents to decorate the school bulletin boards monthly and to make Valentines for some elderly people. They sponsored a math contest in which the coveted first prize went to Steve Osburn. They collected food, clothing, and toys for a needy family. When there was work to be done, the Honor Society was there. The members strived to serve their fellowmon. Hopefully, many students will try to get into this club in the years to come. Action! Get Involved! The Hebron students selected this group of intelligent individuals to rep- resent them in the student council. The council sponsored a queen contest, a senior-faculty basketball gome, and a school dance. They also invited an ac- robatic celebrity to perform the an- cient skills of yoga for the students. This organization has a lot of poten- tial. It provides a way for students to improve conditions and express their viewpoints by working within the system. Mike Broughton and Pat Murphy were always there to lend their services and comments on any council committee. If you have a sug- gestion or complaint, take it to one of your student representatives. It is your student council and it will be as suc- cessful OS you, the student body, makes it. Mary Lou Eichelberger represented Hebron honorably at Bloomington for girls ' state. Linda Taylor was her alter- nate. Mary Lou also received the D.A.R. award and went on to win the county D.A.R. award. Congratulations Mary. Jack Haberlin was named boys ' stater to represent Hebron at Bloomington. Scott Hoagland was Jack ' s alternate, Sandy Rust, Juanita Finnerty, Cindy Thomas, Lois Schultz, Cheryl Bales, and Velma Hefner helped Mrs. Guillod in the office. The girls typed, counted money, ran off tests, and did all kinds of odds and ends to help shorten Jo ' s busy days. The Betty Crocker Award went to the future homemaker, Lois Schultz. Con- gratulations, Lois! Dick Nethery cooled the students thirsts by filling the pop machine daily. Thanks Orph! Don Osburn, Lynn Birky, Jeff Hartz, Jerry Thatcher, Todd Steffel, Ann Donaldson, Dan DeYoung, Gloria Rust, Ginny Fox, Dawn Curry, and Anthony Genakos helped Miss Corbitt in the brary. Thanks for your help. Honors and Recognitions for Service Twirlers — Cindy Mason, Robin Elam, Kim Block, Mary Sprctley Drum Mu|or Rolin tiam Let ' s Play! The Hebron High School bond spent year of hard work and playing (their instruments, of course!) They en- thralled their audiences with the an- nual winter and spring concerts. They participated in a solo and ensembel contest and these talented musicians took second place in the Valparaiso University Homecoming Parade. During the summer the dedicated group spent hours practicing for the Fourth of July festivities. They also marched for the only varsity basket- ball game at Hebron. Practicing up for a big opening night is Kathy Robertson, Diane Birky, Brenda Hoi- seth, and Colleen Wilson. Sing Along With Jerry! This year ' s chorus sang for the members of the H.E.B., at Teibles, and ot the Aylesworth Club House. They also sang for the student body with Gwen Birky accompanying them on the guitar. At the state solo and Erv sembel contest, Vicki Pitzer won a first for the chorus, if was a good year for choruS; and Hebron has one of the best! We ' ve Only Just Begun Our Junior High Band has done an outstanding job this year which includes attending State Band Contest. These students have really been reaching in the field of music by playing easier band pieces played in previous years by the High School Band. Remember, practice makes per- fect! «■ Sprechen Sie Deutsch? — Ja, a, wir sprechen deutsch. Der deutsch Klub hat ein sehr gut time this year. They baked deutsch Sch- wachlichkeit which they served at their meetings. An amerikanisch student who spent sechs months studying in Deutschlond gave the club ein interes- sant slide and oral presentation on her stay in Europe. The club also took a Strauchein to German town in Chicago. Debbie Daunora concen- trates very hard as she translates from a German magazine. Das ist plies for this year. Have ein gut Sommer! Fiesta Time The romantic and colorful flavor of Spanish life was evident in the ac- tivities of the Hebron Spanish club. The group began the year v ith a fiesta party. Later, a Spaniard came and talked to the group about life in his country. Finally, the club sponsored a trip to the Art Institute of Chicago v hich proved to be a highly enjoyable and informative activity. Adios til next fall! The Skeleton The Hebron High School Drama Club enjoyed its second year of exis- tence under the new leadership of Mrs. Siegers and Mrs. Nelson. In an attempt to stimulate interest in the theatre, the Dromo Club members attended the musical Brigodoon in Valparaiso and they also gove o moving shadow production, Silent Night and the Seven O ' Clock News, during the school Christmas program. For their annual fall play, the club presented The Skeleton Walks. Pic- tured in this Hebron premier, Phil Cooley, Donna Lilley, Paula Runyon, and Debi Ingram come to the rescue of o horrified Mary Lou Eichelberger. Betty Hough faints with fright? into the open arms of Allan Karnes. Debi Ingram fells Allan Karnes of her near kidnapping. Behind the scenes, Robin Elam tries to make Debbie Daunora look like a mysterious, old woman. Walks 1971 Atomic Age of the Hawks The Booster Club mode it through another yeor of intensely anxious, suspenseful moments with few ca- sualties except for some extreme coses of high blood pressure and laryngitis. The members including Paula Runyan, Gail DeFries, Cindy Mason, and Patti Mullins made posters to keep the student body informed of upcoming sporting events. They also sponsored a contest for the varsity basketball player with the most kissable lips. Melvin Morrow, a player on that acclaimed Hebron squad had some tips for the young ladies concerning the matter. At the Porter County Tourney, the Booster Club with their theme of the 1971 Atomic Age of the Hawks exploded with support and spirit which sparked the Hawks triurr - phant attack. Great team work. Boost- er Club members! lE , ' i«S KeiSBSS T®«s 7: tliif Live a Little The G.A.A. had another fun-filled, action-packed year. Who says girls con ' t equal the physical capabilities of the mole set? Observe the powerful windup of the pitcher, the alertness of the boserunners, the mighty stance of the batter, and the rugged physique of the ballplayers. Why, with the stamina, sure-hondedness, and con- fidence illustrated by Paula Gesse, some of these girls would be shoe-ins for the Chicogo White Sox! Of course, G.A.A. tries to promote grace and poise in its members, too. Just ask the chorming young lodies (Bonnie El- dridge and Darlene Karnes) pictured ot the initiation ceremony. Volleyball Results Won 2— Lost 9 Ladies! Betty Crocker The Future Homemokers of America cooked up olot of fun tfiis year. For the new members, the FHA sponsored a masquerade Halloween party com- plete with apple bobbing, spooks, relay races, and prizes! They also shared their homemoking skills with the children at the Vale Day School and with the elderly at Whispering Pines. Guest speakers demonstrated some of the arts of being a home economist. To acquaint the student body with the FHA, members spon- sored FHA week. Don Cooley, Kim Block, Paulo Geese, and other fashion- conscious students display their sharp sense of color coordination during Flash and Clash Day. Well, that about sews up the FHA activities for this year. Fro772 Here, Where? The inquisitive members of the Science Club spent another year of questioning and probing for knowl- edge and a better understanding of the universe. They owed the fifth through ninth graders with their scien- tific achievements during their magic show. In the spring the club sponsored its annuo! Hebron Science Fair. The two intelligent-looking, young scientists shown expounding on the properties of higher physics in relation to their science fair project ore Mark Finstead and the president of the organization Kevin DeYoung. In the biology section, Chris Steinhilber discusses the forma- tion and growth of some common molds. Remember these thinking indi- viduals. Perhaps one of them will become Hebron ' s first Nobel Prize Winner! Hebron Sharpshooters The newly organized Rifle Club has been working hard to perfect their ac- curacy of shooting and their sport- manship and safety in rifle shooting. Every Monday night these students would practice this skill from 7-9 p.m. Hebron competed against the Mich- igan City Rifle Club and the Culver Military Academy in several prelim- inary matches. Representing Hebron against more than 300 riflemen from the state were Mike Steffel, Benny Yonkauskas, Don Cooley and Jack Haberlin, Jim Sherman, Mark Finstad, Tom Riggs, Paula Alyea, Bruce Steffel, Todd Steffel, and Jim Rayner. The sponsors are Roy Rutherford and Ken- neth Schiek, who is shown loading the trap while Jim Sherman and Don Cooley aim at the target. This group shows much determination. Who knows — next year it may be state chomp! Did you hear about . . .: Want to know the latest news items at Hebron High School? Just get in touch with one of the Hawker Mem- bers. They know everything from who mode honor roll to who wore a midi last Thursday! They work hours col- lecting information, writing up articles, typing, making drawings and laying out the paper. Many a night these dedicated public servants go home with sore swollen fingers as the editor, Vicki Hessling, Brenda Einspahr, Bonnie Rosenbaum, Gwen Birky, and Juanito Finnerty could testify. Workers at Work Ever wonder what goes on in that lonely lighted, second story room in the high school every Monday night? Strange, weird, mysterious happenings! Students draw pages and pages of squares and rectangles with curious codes written on them. A teacher sits meditating with a mystical turban on his head. Erry noises break the uneasy silence. Secret signals are flashed from the window. What is the meaning of all of this? Is it some underground force conspiring to overthrow the town of Hebron? Goodness, NO! It is only the busy dedicated stoff of the Seneca writing, typing, laying out pages, taking pictures, and having a little fun in order that you might have this 1971 yearbook! A Hawaiian Paradise in Hebron?? With a romantic South Pacific atmo- sphere, the 1970 Junior-Senior Prom took place in the Hebron gymnasium with was transformed, as if magically (just osk Dwight Scroggins) into on en- chanting Hawoiian Paradise. Under the pale blue sky were the palm trees and the silhouettes of the grass huts and Hawaiian villages, while in the ba ckground was the soft, stirring sounds of the Rensselaer Dance Band. The king for the memorable evening was Don Bales and Margaret Hrivnak was the queen. Attending the royal couple were Jeff Rust, Yvonne Dernay, Daryl Riley, and Patti Jo Rust. The sponsors who helped moke the evening o success were Mrs. Roberts, Mr. Seeman, ond Mr. Lord. The islanders who served the Hawaiian delica- cies — intricately decorated petit fours and mysteriously steoming punch — were Daryl Riley, Susan Blood, Patty Steinhilber, Yvonne Bernay, and Randy Bell. Some of those who en- joyed themyelves during the Grand March were Kothy Chopmon, Thadd Smok, Dick Tysen, Andrew Slager, and Gwen Birky.
