' ' ' ' 1965 SQTOYOMAN VOLUME LX1 1, . .. HEALDSBURG SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL HEALDSBURG, CALIFORNIA I 1 DEDICATION Mr. Richard Watson Healdsburg High School Healdsburg, California Dear Mr. Watson: Your 1966 Sotoyoman Staff dedicates this year's Sotoyoman to you in recognition of your patient help and guidance, not only to us on Saturday mornings, but to your many students as Well. From all have come well-deserved respect and admiration for your many fine personal qualities. Throughout your teaching experience at Healdsburg High School, you have revealed knowledge to students with competence and warmth. We will always remember you as a friend, not just as an instructor. But more than that, we Will remember that it was you, Mr. Watson, more than anyone else, perhaps, who helped us develop our capacities and our understanding of life. It is, therefore, with deep appreciation, that we affectionately dedicate the 1966 Sotoyoman to you. Sincerely, THE SOTOYOMAN STAFF CONTENTS SCHOOL LIFE PAGE 18 CLUBS PAGE 34 SPORTS PAGE 46 UN DERCLASSMEN PAGE 62 SENIORS PAGE 84 ADVERTISERS PAGE 112 DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENT Mr. Homer Hoyt If there is no tomorrow, all of the yesterdays will have been for naught. Humanity's struggle throughout the centuries has been to achieve freedom. Our founders won in their time and bequeathed us that great heritage of liberty which is our American birthright and the world's best hope. The present world with its fear, confusion, and tension has made current life more threatening and disturbing than ever before. Foremost is the clash of arms and minds in a life-and-death struggle between the democratic ways of life and those forces which would destroy it, cancel all human rights, and enslave the World. As the pages of history unfold in the classrooms of our country, you have the opportunity to understand and accept the political, economic, and social meaning of the American way of life. You will learn about the greatness of America in terms of her natural resources, political citizenship, productive power, economic system, cultural and scientific achievementsftechnology, and advances in the general wel- fare. You will discover that our citizens enjoy more basic rights under the goals and framework of our free institutions than at any other time or place. You will come to cherish the privilege of putting your creative talents to work in developing your abilities and skills to their highest level. You will come to appre- ciate the wisdom and ways of our democratic society and ways of upholding and improving it. Nothing on the public school program is more important than this background of training for citizenship. However, you must come to realize also that these rights involve many responsibilities both now and in the future. In the days and years ahead, you will be called upon to close the gap between principles and practice, build unity and strength at home and friendships abroad, repel any efforts to blot out freedom, demonstrate to the world that democracy works here, and give new hope for humanity in its struggle for liberty, opportunity, and brotherhood. 5 K AD I I TRTIO Z A 1 X Hnnmunq, 6 wa: '3s awww In - ROBERT L. It plays a vital part in the activities of the language de- partment. The lab enables each student to have more individual attention. The new process of mastering a language consists of first learning how to speak it and then learning how to write it. Now that the language lab has been in existence for several years, teachers and students both agree that it plays a successful and worth- while role in the foreign language curriculum. The Student Free Speech Movement cried for Civil Rights and Anti and Pro- Vietnam dis- cussions took place from New York to Cali- fornia. The in apparel, too, has seemed at un- rest. Hemlines were rising above the knees one day, and occasionally turned toward great mod- esty by falling to the ankles as the Granny Dress was Worn. Concerning out of school wear, it was said that the young sexes seemed to have merged into one as we found boys and girls, both with long hair and fashions created for either, both, and or. Revolutionary dances entered the dance WORK AND FUN IN 1-aff' Xqgfiicx 1 l 5 t if f A group of sophomore girls decorate for their popular Mardi Gras . floors. From the Twist of the early '60's we developed such strange steps as they Frug, the Pony, and the Jerk performed to the music of the Beatles, the Kinks, and the Rolling Stones. New developments took place at school this year also. We particularly want to remember the new library. This year the school news- paper was revived with the hope that it will continue. The school year of 1965-1966 past at a rapid pace with dramatic developments in the nation and the world, and further, the pace does not seem to be slackening and the job of learning to become tomorrows citizens contin- ues to be of prime importance. 20 L OUR CTIVE STUDE T BODY The Pep Band and Mr. Sbrana hard at work. 1 K , in Mr. Caldwell, our student activi- ty director, is always on hand to stimulate school spirit. Gota SOTOYOMAN DIRECTORS Richard Watson, Yearbook Advisor 1 I l Marta Thompson and Barbie Meyer, Yearbook Co-Editors Gene LuHreIl, Yearbook Advisor The Sotoyoman Staff meets every Sat- urday morning from nine to twelve in order to provide you with your yearbook in the Spring. These meetings begin the first week of school in September and end in the last of March. They are conducted in our new library under the supervision and with the help of Mr. Watson and Mr. Luttrell. The staff members have a hard and de- manding job and they do it well. It consists of cropping pictures, drawing up pages, pre- paring write-ups, and finally typing up the needed information. On page thirty-three is the, Business Staff. Every fall they visit the town mer- chants and get contracts totaling from eighty to ninety ads. Through their diligent work comes most of the money that is necessary to finance our yearbook. Due to the hard Work and close co-operation of the Business and Editorial Staffs, you are able to have such a fine yearbook as the 1966 Sotoyoman. gf it V , 5, EDITORIAL STAFF K Vqyvyk ' 7 rr? : Q Mary Ann Henderlong and Julie Segeshio N-I Joyce Rodden and Karen Lodrago K,-.LA 1.-ar Marta Thompson, Lee Henderlong and Barbie Meyer Linda Ramsey, Darla Murhammer, Barbara Hayes, and Trudi Murhammer Annette Trucco and Penny Cumming 32 ma, e 'x xr? . Vicky was a very enjoyable person as she took an active part in our school life and we will long remember her visit. Our exchange student, Sandro Carpi. Alessandro fSandroJ Carpi arrived at San Francisco International Airport during the late summer of 1965. There he met his American par- ents, the Alvin Cadds. Sandro's home lies near Milan, Italy, in the Po Valley. This is a rich agricultural area with many diversified crops being cultivated. Sandro arrived in time to help with the harvesting of prunes in our area. Fishing and hunting are two sports that have captivated Sandro's attention in Healdsburg as well as tennis. He is also an active participant in the drama productions and enjoys the opportunity to use his English. His warm personality, delightful smile, and outgoing manner have insured Sandro of many Healdsburg friends. Our wish is that Sandro will return again to visit Healdsburg. The team went winless through the month of December including the Redwood Empire Tournament. As practice and experience began to build, January rolled around, and the team began to post some victories. At last as league play got underway, the young team - mostly Juniors - began to work together and the exciting league action showed that the Healdsburg Varsity was a hard-working, competitive team that could beat almost any team in Sonoma County. Several very thrilling cliff hangers took place including the game at Sonoma when Healdsburg came from a 20 point deficit to tie and almost defeat the League Champions. When league play ended, Healdsburg was tied for third place with a respect- able 5 win-5 loss record. Since there were mostly Juniors on the team, we are all looking forward to next year when Captain Rick Rossiter will be joined by many returning lettermen and another great Basket- ball season. In addition to the Varsity, Healdsburg also sent to the floor a fine J .V. Team, a B Team, and for the first time, a Freshman Team. Each of these teams won their share of games and enjoyed loyal support from the fans. Once again we want to thank coaches and teams for another successful year of Basketball. 'Ilhe class of '69 wishes to thank everyone at Healdsburg High School for the wonderful year we have had. In the beginning of the year we didn't know what to expect. Gradually, however, we became en- volved in school and class activities We have been busy with all our money-making projects. We were quite successful in our cookie, cupcake, and cake sales. The beginning band keeps busy under the direction of Mr. Sbrana. The highlight of our money-making ventures was the Freshman Dance, held in March. We have learned a great deal this year about high school life. We hope to continue to learn more next year and the year after so we can be the greatest sen- iors in Healdsburg history. 54 . . x. -L ' Q it .s f ve- 'X if ag? - ' ' T 1 J. On November 10 we had our Sophomore Dance, The Mardi Gras, featuring the Hip Noticsg we had a very good turn-out. The school introduced a new activity, an annual Turkey Trot, which was held on De- cember 24, the activity contained three divisions: an egg toss, a tug-of-war event, and a cross-country meet. Our class was hoping to win all three divisions, but unfortun- ately we only won the tug-of-war and a Sophomore, Dick Metheny, came in third in the cross-country meet. CThe mighty Juniors won everything elselj . 1, V-'f-'S-Y' fi M ! Sandy Remolif, Margie DuVander, Barbara Paffenberger worked hard on the Sophomore Class Dance. We also took charge of concessions at some of the games. To make more money this year, we had our annual spa- ghetti dinner which was held February 10. The theme of our dinner was Fior de Italia which means flower of Italy. The dinner was a great success as the multi purpose room was decorated just like an Italian restau- rant. Our class now has a substantial treasury and is looking forward to the events of next year. - ' in Lee Adams '- Emily Aleiandro XR K 5- in I 75 i Cindy Allen l 3 S -ef' Gary Armitage B Av'll ruce I a Joanna Awe Paul Ayala Diane Balentine Janice Barrctta Linda Barrena Kathy Barry Donna Bateman Judy Batt Larry Biagi Karen Biocca Yolanda Beltran June Black Mike Bradford Joe Brandt Chantell Elrookins Nancy Brown Tim Buchignani Linda Budeau Bruce Campbell avyk --A - .D P?- fg if r 'ng , X I , Wi ei at f f is so s L. We the class of 1966 entered Healdsburg Senior High School as the second Freshman class to enroll. Our first activity was to put on the Freshman dance entitled the Leprechaun Leap. Its success was due, primarily, to the efforts of our class officers: Kathy Savoie, Presidentg Charlotte Wenke, Vice-President, Pam Young, Secretary-Treasurer, Kathy Williams, Yell Leader. We elected as our officers in 1964-65: Frank Diaz, President, Ken Prat, Vice-President, Linda Schafer, Secretary-Treasurer, Don Vannucci, Yell Leader. Dur- ing this year We held the Sophomore dance. The officers who helped make our Junior year a success Were: Marie Ramazzotti, President, Ruth Ubol- di, Vice-Presidentg Pam Young, Secretary-Treasurerg Cliff Wass, Yell Leader. The Gridiron Queen Contest started off a series of money-making projects for the Prom. For the first time at Healdsburg High, the 86 Prom was held at the Villa and the theme was Arrive- derci Roma. Our Senior activities began this year with the Senior Dinner and Dance at the Villa, followed by Sen- ior Dress-Up Day, Senior Sneak Day, the Senior Break- fast, Baccalaureate, and last, but not least, Graduation. In the four years We've spent here at Healdsburg High, our class has seen many changes. Last year our school Alma Mater was written, the Smith Robinson Gyim was completed and our school flag pole was erected. This year the new school library was dedi- cated and opened for use to the student body. Our class of 1966 wishes to express our thanks to those teachers, parents, and friends who have helped to make the last four years inspiring years in which we came to better understand the world, our country, and ourselves.
