First marching ban For Hazen's concert band 1971 was a landmark year-it was the first time they marched as a group in their three year history. Appearing at all home games, the finale of the fall season was a per- formance combining the Hazen and Renton marching bands, which took place at the halftime of the Hazen- Renton football game. Mike Poole, president, was pleased with the way the student body supported the marching band during the season. The appreciation of our efforts helped us improve our standards of perfor- mance, he stated. Cadet band, where potential concert 172 band members learned technique and style, came a long way in 1970-71, all the way to the point of being able to per- form as a pep band at basketball games. They also attended Band Contest. Orchestra hit an all time high with 34 participating members. With a larg- er group, they also achieved a larger sound-and the high level of competence was remarkable. Valerie Gorton, orches- tra president, was selected to perform with the Seattle Symphony in a per- formance during March. Directing the three groups was Mr. Gleason, director of Hazen's band and orchestra groups for the past three years. The 1971 Drum Major was Keith Cromie.

The 1970-71 Hazen stage band carried on the fine tradition begun by the 1969-70 group. The band played with a high de- gree of emotionalism and spirit and this was very evident to anyone who heard them perform. They continually amazed themselves with the level of performance they could attain when they worked at peak efficiency. Director Mr. Gleason expressed this opinion about Stage Band. This year, the band performed not only at school functions, but in the com- munity as well. Festivals, concerts, and contests made up much of their busy schedule. Much of the same was true of the Studio Singers. This group of students, under the direction of Mr. McManus, entertained all over the area for every- yr ll b Om 174
