This year, Room 300 would have been the origin of singing voices heard in the halls. Vibrations were heard from Hazen's three major singing groups, Acappella Choir, Advanced Glee and the Freshman Glee. Under a new di- rector, Mr. McManus, they have done an outstanding job. Acappella Choir contained both males and females and was the main preforming group. Sue Dobes was choir president, and she did,her best to see that the mem- bers enjoyed working together, and, more important, were able to work to- gether un selfishly. The All-Northwest Choir chose three Hazen performers for a concert in March. They were Denise Syjud, Diane Turcott, and Bonnie Higgins. E Advanced Glee was composed of soph- omore, junior, and senior girls who performed at all music concerts. Incoming frosh participated in the Freshman Glee, to develope their music- ianship and understanding. A Freshman Nonette was formed and they also pre- formed at concerts along with several outside engagements. 1970-71 was a year when the music department didn't grow in numbers, but grew in another special way. The mem- bers grew to be big enough to get along with others to the extent that the group is one and consequently more important that the individual, in the words of Mr. McManus.

First marching ban For Hazen's concert band 1971 was a landmark year-it was the first time they marched as a group in their three year history. Appearing at all home games, the finale of the fall season was a per- formance combining the Hazen and Renton marching bands, which took place at the halftime of the Hazen- Renton football game. Mike Poole, president, was pleased with the way the student body supported the marching band during the season. The appreciation of our efforts helped us improve our standards of perfor- mance, he stated. Cadet band, where potential concert 172 band members learned technique and style, came a long way in 1970-71, all the way to the point of being able to per- form as a pep band at basketball games. They also attended Band Contest. Orchestra hit an all time high with 34 participating members. With a larg- er group, they also achieved a larger sound-and the high level of competence was remarkable. Valerie Gorton, orches- tra president, was selected to perform with the Seattle Symphony in a per- formance during March. Directing the three groups was Mr. Gleason, director of Hazen's band and orchestra groups for the past three years. The 1971 Drum Major was Keith Cromie.
