Heated battles of skill 8L will come victorious r I WW! 158 Programs to control pollution in the United States, in the words of one Hazen debater, was a challenging yet wearing topic if debated all yearf, And, under the guidance of Coach Rem- linger, it was, indeed, debated all year- by both varsity and junior varsity mem- bers ofthe team. From the University of Puget Sound to league debates to a couple of two day tournaments-one at Pacific Lutheran University and another at Seattle Pacific College, the debaters never lost their enthusiasm for a real goodn debate! By the first part of second semester Hazen debaters were third in the North Puget Sound League Standings. That same semester, they acquired extra prac- tice time by debating at grade schools. When the end of the year came, mem- bers, having just received the new re- solution, were already practicing for the next year.

This year, throwing water balloons at Mr. Suzick and racing with tricycles were just a few of the opportunities offered to Hazen students by the Pep Club. For the first time in Hazen's short history, a Pep Club finally got it all together by actually involving the stu- dents. Guided by an appointed Pep Cc Jn- cil, the new members swung into action at the first of the year by electing Nancy Lorig president. Organization of a club, made up of all students who wished to join, was the first accomplishment of the council. Crepe paper streamers and a fire-hoop signified the next accomplishment. Mem- bers spent hours decorating both the Hazen halls and the stadium for the football game with Renton. Climaxing the pep year was Pep Week. That one week in February, before the Hazen-Renton basketball game, was a week to top all weeks! ln addi- tion to the previously mentioned water balloon throw and tricycle race there was a beard growing contest, a sucker sale, a door-decorating contest, and several other attractions. Nancy Lorig summed up the impact of this club when she said, I have received so many compliments from the Hazen staff and students that it is un- believable. lg a, UJUP j MV? Dedication, dexterity combine to create models. f. -.. ,Q .v---vDw.L i I ! -hi jd' Kings, queens, knights and check- mate!-all important ingredients in the game of chess. This was what Hazen's chess club was all about. Their purpose was to provide a place where people interested in chess could find friendly competition to test their skills. Their advisor was Mr. Bolf. Q!!! Ships, amour, cars, and planes were just a few of the model categories used by the model club this year. Under the leadership of advisor Mr. Howland and president Bill Spears, the members strove to learn new techniques of model building. Also, they organized a model-of-the-month award based on the previously mentioned categories. Their handiwork was often seen in the up- stairs display window. 159
