Hazen started the season right by jumping to a 2-0 record, defeating both Kennedy and Sammamish decisively. Then came a real test, South Puget Sound League favorite Auburn. Hazen led all the way but a few bad breaks in the last minute spelled doom and the Highlanders lost 53-50. The first league game was another heartbreaker as Kentridge topped Hazen by two points. Hazen bounced back by smashing Tyee. This set the stage fog the Hazen-Renton game. Both teams exchanged baskets for three quarters, but early in the fourth quarter Renton scored 13 unanswered points and hung on to win. A non-league loss to Bellevue followed, but the Highlanders rallied back to squeak past Highline by three points. Hazen then traveled to Mt. Rainier and suffered a devastating loss. The under- dog Highlanders then rebounded to de- feat Kent-Meridian by five points on Hazen's home court. 4 -wh if f i . ,... .NN , f u. On February 12, I-lazen's Afro-Amer- ican club sponsored their second annual show, Psychedelic Soul , which was presented every period in the large group room. Joyce Reed, president, opened the show by introducing Janet Jones, Debbie Weathers, and Linda Swanigan, who performed an authentic African dance. One of the highlights of the show was the reading of black poetry, where indi- viduals read poems by black authors. Other highlights of the show were a modern dance performance, an African drum number, and a commercial. The show was considered a great suc- cess, performing to standing room only crowds every period. Mr. Donely was the group's advisor. .. .139 , 5 'i D i if i 'S xl. at K' , iii ' it Z .5 fi + :A .sf if ' 5 3 . 139

These include most games won consecutively, best scoring average per season, and best field goal percentage for the season. Hazen was a young, scrappy team best known for their blazing fast break. Highlander victories were keyed by two factors. When they had few turnovers or fouls during a game they seemed to win. Even losses were highlighted by the fact the team never gave up. As Coach Huckle termed it, Despite wins or loss- es the team displayed a consistently line attitude toward the game throughout the season.
