Education- appreciation and learning I think these young ladies work harder than any group in school. There is very little reward for them. Mr.Long- well had that to say about the usher club which he advises. Composed of twenty-five girls, the usher club performed ushering duties at most school functions. President Cindy Collie was largely responsible for the management of the club this year.

Remember the tall, green Christmas tree in the cafeteria? Thanks to Torch members and their advisor, Mr.Long- well, a bit of Christmas spirit was added to Hazen last December. Torch is an honorary club, comprised of students who earn at least a 3.2 grade average for three quarters of each school year. This year, at one of the two yearly meetings, president Melody Hamilton passed out certificates of achievement to the members ofTorch.

Critiquing teaching methods, tutoring elementary school students, and selling Christmas candle sets were all on the FTA club schedule this year. President Mary Blencoe stated that i . Winter clad nights and a running fountain were familiar ingredients indi- cating pleasant times for lit club mem- bers. Before being admitted to the Seattle Center Playhouse - that place most often visited by lit club - members would find themselves grouped around the Play- house fountain occupied with friendly conversation. Advisors Mrs. Dunn and Mr.Longwell, accompanied the club to all the reper- tory plays beginning with a Flea in Her Ear . At a fall meeting president Joy Swart- fager expressed hopes of also attending Renton Little Theater productions. Highlighting the entire year, accord- ing to members, was the meeting of actress Mryna Loy from the Thin Man Series. Meeting twice a month, the members of Spades contributed their time to the service ofthe handicapped. Trips to Buckley, a food drive for the Renton Food Bank, and a Christmas party were among a few of the things accomplished by members. Perhaps president Sue McFadden summed up Spades when she said it was good-natured, warm hearted, and giving. l33
