Hazen 33 Evergreen 0 Hazen stretched its league record to 2-0 with an overwhelming 33-0 victory over Evergreen. Behind a well-polished offensive line, Hazen runners scrambled for 5 touchdowns-the longest being a 41 yard scamper by halfback Gary Reed. Hazen's strong defense held Ever- green to an unbelievable 8 yards rushing, thanks to the defensive front four of the Highlanders, while the backlield intercepted 3 Wolverine passes. Before the night was over, Hazen was to rush for 327 yards with Darrell Beane again leading the way with 128 and Gary Reed close behind with 96. Coach Bill Diambfi Hazen end Dirk Crump hauls in a pass as Wol- verine defenders move in for the kill. Hazen O - Kent-Meridian 22 Hazen's 2-0 league record was snapped by the Kent-Meridian Royals 22-0 in a game where Hazen just couldn't get going. The Royals, rated number four in the state, led at halftime 8-0 and then scored twice in the second half much to the dismay ofHazen fans. Hazen had many good gains which were called back at crucial times because of costly penalties and in doing so, had to give up valuable possession of the ball. The game turned into a defensive battle in which Kent got all the breaks including the recovery of three Hazen fumbles and the interception of a Tim Lambro pass. Hazen 0 - Newport 20 Hazen opened its football season with hopes of repeating the previous year's rout of Newport. A surprise was in store for Hazen as Newport tumed the tide and won, 20-O. Hazen couldnlt get anything going as Newport outgained the Highlanders 282 to 85. Newport got off 57 offensive plays to only 25 for Hazen as the non- league opener was dropped. Mt.Rainier, one of the early favorite to take the championship, met a toug Hazen defense which held them to onl 58 yards rushing while the Hazen groun machine piled up 276 yards led by Dar rell Beane's I33. Mt.Rainier took a quick lead an then Hazen came back with 34 straigh points. Behind excellent blocking, Haze backs ran for 4 touchdowns. First Homecoming sets exciting traditions Hazen 21 Highline O Hazen's first Homecoming was a happy one as the Highlanders over- powered the Highline Pirates 21-0. After the halftime show, Hazen scored two more touchdowns to add assurance to their 7-0 halftime lead. The High- landers had one of the best games ofthe season as the fantastic defense stopped Highline for a puny 5 yards rushing. During the evening Frank Reed scored twice and threw to Dirk Crump for the other touchdown as the entire Highlander offensive team outmanned Highline's defense. H6
