Hazen had good balance both offensively and defensively making it very hard for the opposition to find weaknesses in the Highlanders. Hazen placed three players on the NPSL all-star team: Mark Carr at defen- sive tackle, Nevin Miller at linebacker, and Tom Lambro was the unanimous choice as place kicker. This year at the football banquet Darrell Beane was voted the Most Im- proved Player. Dirk Henningsen received the Inspirational Award and Nevin Miller was voted Team Captain and winner ofthe Elk's Achievement Award. Head coach Don Anderson summed up the season this way: You always try to finish first and we almost did but we were very pleased with our second place finish. The tremen- dous support of the student body was greatly appreciated by the team and it really helped us to know the students were behind us. To finish second place in the school's second varsity year is a real accomplishment and with a fine retuming nucleus next year we may do even betterf, P- I S Head Coach Don Anderson W L Kent-Meridian 8 0 HAZEN , up ysti , tiivi 1 2 s 4 ryw c lasis A 3 Highline .2 3 ' 2 4 Kentndge , e T ' 7 if K ,sg Wifi' gk. Hazen 33 Evergreen 0 Hazen stretched its league record to 2-0 with an overwhelming 33-0 victory over Evergreen. Behind a well-polished offensive line, Hazen runners scrambled for 5 touchdowns-the longest being a 41 yard scamper by halfback Gary Reed. Hazen O - Kent-Meridian 22 Hazen's 2-0 league record was snapped by the Kent-Meridian Royals 22-0 in a game where Hazen just couldn't get going. The Royals, rated number four in the state, led at halftime 8-0 and then scored twice in the second half much to the dismay ofHazen fans. Hazen had many good gains which were called back at crucial times because of costly penalties and in doing so, had to give up valuable possession of the ball. The game turned into a defensive battle in which Kent got all the breaks including the recovery of three Hazen fumbles and the interception of a Tim Lambro pass.
