The active majorettes who marched and traveled with the Band are shown ABOVE from left to right: Karyn Aarthun, Bonnie Weigum, Nelda Allen, Debbie Allen, and Judy Fandrich. At the district music festival at Bismarck the trumpet trio composed of Kathy Buchholz, Lynn Oelke, and Ricard Sarff received a number 1 rating and went on to compete at the state music festival at Jamestown and brought home another number 1 rating. Other participants at music festival were: Susan Garner and Bonnie Hanson, alto saxophone soloists; Jeff Chapman, Clarinet soloist; and the clarinet quartet composed of Connie Heine, Bonnie Weigum, Lana Sailer and Jeff Chapman. The band is eagerly looking forward to their June 23-26 trip to Winnipeg, Canada this summer. 17

Ervin, senior repres.; P. Donavan, president. The Hazen Band attended the first annual Rapid City Band Festival, June 10-13 last summer. Our band was in the group that had the distinction of being in the group of bands that were in 1st place. Saturday the Mass Band Concert was held at the football field. Sunday was spent touring the Black Hills. On Monday the group attended a outdoor barbecue at Buffalo, South Dakota, Sponsored by the South Dakota Stockgrowers Association. Shiela Albers was Hazen's queen candidate. The majorettes also accompanied the band. The chaperones were Mrs. Sarff and Mrs. Karges. Mr. Lucas Foss and Mr. Sarff drove the buses. 16

Krieg, L. CONCERT CHOIR SCORES The Hazen High School's Concert Choir received a number 1 rating after competition was completed at the district music festival at Bismarck, North Dakota. The warmup selection was Incline Thine Thine Ear , and the test selection was Hallelujah to the Lord. Also receiving number 1 ratings in the festival held one week later was Marshall Karges, as a soloist, and the boys’ quartet composed of Tim Krause, Syver Vinje, Glenn Mueller, and Marshall Karges. We are proud to say the boys' quartet and Marshall, as a soloist, competed in the state music festival at Jamestown, North Dakota, and also received number 1 ratings again. Other vocal soloists that competed were: Lynette Zilsdorf, Karyn Aarthun, Kathy Buchholz, Glenn Mueller, and Larry Wagner.
