Since this was the first year anything ol' the kind had been introduced, they might well be con- sidered a success and a benefit to our student body government. The Court func- tioned several times during the year and relieved the faculty from taking any action. THE WINGED H jUNE '25 HAYWARD HIGH SCHOOL The John Gamble Memorial At dedicatory exercises held in the school auditorium on March twenty-ninth, a bronze tablet commemorating Dr. john Gamble was unveiled. Dr. Gamble, who died last year, was at one time, as most of you probably know, the principal of our Hayward High School and was loved and revered by all of his pupils. He was a man of high hopes and great prowess, and aimed always to instill in his pupils some bit of the love of knowledge that was his. His was a wonderful character, sympathetic and quick to understand. He always gave ample praise where it was due, but never, as his pupils remember, used harsh terms in rebuke of anyone. Some of his former students were present at the memorial service-Mr. W. T. Helms, of the Class of '95, now Superintendent of Schools in Richmond, Mr. Sterry Lamson, Class of '98, and Oscar Morgan, Class of '97, at one time editor of the Hayward Review . judge Harder was chairman of the day, and spoke briefly of the significance of the occasion. Mr. Helms spoke on john Gamble, Educator. Strange and impossible as it must seem to you who are struggling with Latin, it is quoted that, should you have started with any quotation from Cicero, Dr. Gamble could take it up and go on, giving page after page from memory. It is said, too, that in his class- room work, he never used the text-book to teach the lesson, but was able to give it without keeping one eye on the book and the other on the class, but with his keen eyes both on the class, could easily detect any culprit in the commission of a misdeed. Mr. Sterry Lamson, in a eulogy of Dr. Gamble, fittingly expressed the regard of his former classmates and friends for the friend and teacher of them all. Mr. Morgan, after a few brief remarks, unveiled the tablet, which is strikingly beautiful in its very simplicity. It bears the inscription: jOHN GAMBLE 1840 - 1924 A TEACHER t-A Tribute from his Pupils The quiet beauty of the bronze and the deep feeling behind those few simple words combine to make this tribute the most fitting that could be offered to the memory of such a gentleman and scholar as Dr. Gamble. During the course of the program, a few appropriate numbers were rendered by the High School Orchestra and the Girl's Glee Club. Lead, Kindly Light - Dr. Gamble's favorite hymn-was given as one of the selections by the Glee Club. Dr. Gamble, during his life time, made an ineffaceable impression on all who came in contact with him, and the influence of his scholarship and noble character has been with Hayward High to this day, making it the fine school that it is, and always will be. rHEiwiNoeDiujuNi5'z5 if M' HAYWAEDCHICHSSCHOOIS l THE ASSOCIATED GIRLS HE ASSOCIATED GIRLS STUDENTS is the name given to the girls or- ganization which was established in the spring l925. The enrollment of our high school has been increasing so rapidly during the last few years that it became quite necessary to have some sort of an organization. The girls, assisted and instructed by four able women members of the facul- ty, took it upon themselves to form a united body. The Constitutional Commit- tee appointed, drew up a constitution which provided for the election of the gen- eral officers. The officers elected were as follows: Frances Winslow, presidentg Alice Wilkins, vice-presidentg Inez Miller, secretary, Elizabeth Meyer, treasurer and Lola Kavanaugh, athletic manager. The constitution also provided for a division of the girls into four groups. Each group is headed by one of the follow- ing girls: Angela Hotchkiss, Bernice Flores, Kathryn Rohrer and Miriam Prowse. Through the A. G. S. we hope to intermingle the upper and lower classmen in a more amiable way and on a more sociable basis. By the A. G. S. we endeavor to establish something that will be profitable, serviceable and advantageous to the school. The girls have extended their generous attention to the various clubs in the school, such as the Dramatic, Radio, and Tennis Clubs and especially to the Annual Staff in their numerous sales and drives. The association has been very successfully managed this year. Next year the executive committee expects to enlarge upon the work, now that the prob- lems of organization have been successfully solved. Y. NEC-1, '25. Page Twenty-five
