You may lose something that makes you feel real bad, but nothing hurts as much as loosing one of the best friends you ever had. WE LOVE YOU SIS ... Regina Hay Glenda Sykes We reserve these pages in memory of Linda Arlene Sutherland, a former senior of HHS, who was killed last September in an automobile ac- cident. She was greatly loved and liked by the entire senior class, and we will never forget her. This year the annual staff would like to dedicate the yearbook to a woman who is appreciated by everyone. She is always around to help whenever needed; wheth- er it has to do with library assistance or other school activities. She is always understanding and friendly; and that is why she is admired and respected by all of us. For these reasons, and many more, we dedicate our yearbook to you — MRS. VELMA CRABTREE. That must be a good book. DEDICATION Mrs. Crabtree, our librarian and friend. Does anyone have any chapstick? A relatively young band, the majority being seventh, eighth, and ninth graders, this group has gone through many changes. Since last year, flag girls have been added to the ranks of the band, providing more col- or and life. New band uniforms have helped the band to stand tall and look proud. Several band members have shown their flexibility and musician- ship by switching to different instru- ments as the need arose. The band has shown they have more spirit than any other group, as they've helped shout and play their team on to victo- ry. Several individuals have been recog- ; nized for their accomplishments. Bry- an Caldwell, Kevin Edwards, and Patty i Owens were awarded scholarships and attended the marching bands of America band camp in Whitewater, Wisconsin, over the summer. Carol Deel and Patty Owens were awarded nominations to the McDonald’s All- American Marching Band. Several stu- dents will make All-regional Band and the E.T.$.U. Honors Band. Under the very capable leadership of its seniors and section leaders, the band was able to provide two diffeent marching shows for the _ football games. Besides the band competitions and parades, the band also plans on attending and competing in the con- cert festival. In the spring, the new jazz band which was started last year will again return and plans to be even ‘ more involved. 79 80 The choir, under the direction of John R. Whitner is doing very well this year. They started this year with their first concert at the Annual Fall Festival in Haysi, then with a concert at the Open House PTA at Haysi High School. There are many more con- certs planned and also a spring tour is planned. On Halloween the cohir, along with the band, participated in having a Haunted House, and the choir held games at the Sandlick Halloween Carnival to raise money for the spring tour. Four of five students who au- ditioned for All-Regional Choir placed in the tryouts. Those students were: Jerri Whitner and Devin Robinson, First Choir; Karen Owens and Char- lotte Compton, Second Choir. Congratulations!! face! I’m sure | speak for the team and the other coaches in thanking all for this support. We hope that we can repeat and even improve upon this season in the 1985 campaign. We have a lot of | valuable people returning. If this year’s juniors can emulate the lead- ership of this year’s seniors, we have a real shot at another success- ful season next year. To the seniors | say, congratulations for a job well done, and good luck; | wish you the same success in life as you’ve en- joyed on the field this year. To the underclassmen, congratulations, too, and see you next year! Coach Colley SS ers ————— | el MOST SUCCESSFUL SEASO ay zs 5 DeWayne Stanley, SE, CB. Py | scbehyp i oe od ‘inontnatt Jeff Colley, CB, RB. The 1984 fo otball season f was very successful for the i Seniors and underclassmen alike. The Seniors will be missed immensely for their outstanding play and lead- ership this year. Hard work and dedication led this team to the most successful regular season in the school’s history, 8-2. For all the players, but for the Sen- iors especially, this season will live in their memories ; for many years to come. Coach Colley s . Mark Justice, FB. Kevin Perrigan, T. Did you see this year’s football cheerleaders, they don’t wear skirts any more; they’re wearing pants. They do look nice! This year’s squad had a lot to cheer about. The team finished with a 4-3 record and ‘showed promise for the future by defeating Garden and Hurley. One of the best games of the year was the match up with Clintwood, who had not lost a game. Even though we were doubled in team size we con- trolled the game but lost by a 6-0 score. 91 rn -_3er et ee This year the Tigerettes had one of their smallest teams ever. They made up for their lack of size with tremendous quickness. With a few lucky breaks in close games, the Ti- gerettes would have been near the top in the district. Next year looks very good for the Tigerettes. They will have 4 girls coming back with a lot of experience. Coach Deel can be proud of his girls this year and look forward to next year with high hopes. The 1985 season was one that continued the success of baseball at Hysi. For the fourth consecutive season the Tigers qualified for the regionals. The Tigers opened the regionals with an exciting 3-2 win over Ervinton on a rain drenched field at St. Paul. The Tigers lost to Jonesville 5-I in the semi-finals. One of the bright spots of the season was the pitching of Brian Stanley, who concluded his career with 24 wins, which are the most in school history. The 1985 Tigers expect to be very competitive, and hopeful- ly will continue the success. We will have 7 returning starters from the semi-final loss.
