Text from Pages 1 - 176 of the 1982 volume:

i- _ TIGERE REFLECTIONS ... CAPTURED MOMENTS, MIRRORED MEMORIES, IMAGES OF YESTERDAY. Reflections of the times and faces of the year of ’82 (of course, froma Tigerseye point of view) ... pretty girls and beauty queens, quiet mo- ments, special faces, smiles and victories, brothers in friendship, even a human pyr- amid ... Reflections are the essence of the year, the memories of good times, and great friends. 2 Theme { Theme 3 TIGEREYE DEDICATION We dedicate our 1982 yearbook to a man whom we all respect and ad- mired. Always the professional, yet always available to those students who need to talk — he “embodies” the ideal of a true teacher. For all your history know-how and your friendly smiles, we thank you and we give you this annual as a symbol of our appreciation ... Mr. Raymond McCarty Profile of a dedicated professor. Pam Mitchell and Mr. McCarty shares a few laughs in the gym. A quiet moment after a busy day. Yes, we know you are the greatest. 4 Dedication LEADERS In order to keep our school running smoothly, Mr. Yates and Mr. Bartley set rules and guidelines and did their best to make each student to abide by them. On the other hand, they were always there to listen to everyone’s problems and help many students with their algebra. Through endless mornings of writing excuses and making last minute an- nouncements, they patiently stood be- side us. Patsy Kilgore, Secretary Nancy Sutherland, Cafeteria Clerk 6 Administration SCHOOL LEADERSHIP iC Mr. Ronnie Bartley, Assistant Principal The guidance counselors have been influential in helping us plan our education and very patient through all the schedule changes. Each student was informed of the requirements needed for their certain curriculm. More importantly, they gave advice when needed. Aside from the usual duties of teaching, activities like coaching, sponsoring clubs and forensics involve the faculty. Extra time is re- quired, but this goes into the formulation of a complete teaching staff. Even so, the whole point of being a teacher may be that gleam of understanding in the eye of a student that makes it all worth while. But as the end came nearer, shock re- placed anxiousness as we real- ized how little time we had left and that being a senior meant making the best of our time. As our high school years faded into memories, we made it known that we were the spirited class of “82”. Could literature be so boring that Pam decides to leave? The shar- ing of dreams and _ interests through the years, fussing about teachers, and even those little arguments help make the year special. Leaving these friends who have become such a major part of one’s life brings insecur- ity, but also there’s a sense of gratitude for the moments we had together. Being in the eighth grade also means a lot of hard work and effort, not to men- tion endless trips to the fourth floor, band room and agriculture buildings. r But all in all being an eighth grader means being with your friends, meeting new people and taking on , more responsibilities and slowly but surely working your way to the top. BETA’S RECOGNIZED The Beta Club consists of those stu- dents who have a B average or better. It is a non-profit, leadership-service organization for high school students. Its purpose is to stimulate effort, re- ward achievement, and to encourage and assist its members to continue their education after high school. We built the traditional Homecoming float for the queen and her court. One of our objectives was to sponsor a needy child for Christmas. Another one of our major goals was to raise money to attend the state Beta Club Convention. Last year, I6 students at- tended the state convention in Nor- folk, Va. Brenda Edwards ran for the state office of Vice-President. She re- ceived the place of first runner-up which was a great honor considering the size of our school compared to the size of the other schools that partici- pated. This year, we again sponsored a stu- dent to run for office at the state con- vention in Roanoke. Missy O’Quinn ran for the office of Vice-President. Brenda K. The year’s officers are: Jackie Rose — Pres., Lisa Thomas — V. Pres., Denechia Owens — Sec. Treas. This year’s club is the largest ever even though the members had to make paper mache masks for their initiation. In the fall four of the club’s members and its sponsor attended a craft workshop held at Pound. The club is now learning to make Christmas tree orna- ments. 64 Clubs YOUN i Ae the same time. BAND RECEIVES “DIVISION I” AT SCIENCE HILL The Haysi Tiger Marching Band proved to “Have that Spirit” by marching on the field to an exciting drumbeat then proceeding to build the spirit with snappy tunes and lively dances. They attended the Norton Invitational Band Festival, and the Lonesome Pine Band Festival. ACTIVITIES A WEEK OF EXCITEMENT Life at Haysi High is pretty well based on routine procedures such as going to the same classes at the same time everyday; it’s seeing the same teacher and friends and learning their own unique personalities. But there’s one week every year when all these routine things seem to suddenly reverse and life seems to be thrown into chaos. This is Spirit Week. The week that dig- nified teachers become informal and the week your so called “good” stu- dents are the ones you have the most trouble hunting down. But most impor- tantly of all, it’s the week that a special spirit sweeps the school. A spirit of pride and union that rises during the preparations for the arriving Home- coming, that makes even the most apa- thetic student want to get up and get involved. Bob and Norma seem to be all tied up. 96 Spirit Week one. Spirit Week 97 HOMECOMING “81” Lisa Thomas — Homecoming Queen of I98I. Homecoming at Haysi High is always a very special night and this year was no exception. People come from all around Haysi to enjoy the Homecoming festivi- ties. This year the fans witnessed a Tiger football victory, a dance, but most impor- tantly of all, seven beautiful girls repre- senting their classes in the Homecoming Court of 1981. Many hours of hard work were put into preparing for Homecoming. Hours spent with mothers getting the right dress ready for their daughters, clubs working on floats, and the coaches preparing the football team. Tension and nervousness seem to be a constant companion of all the participants of Homecoming. But all these things were forgotten with the crowning of the Queen, Lisa Thomas. And the joy that showed on all seven girls faces couldn't help but make everyone of the parents, clubs, and coaches say, “'It was worth it.” d Senior representatives — Lisa Thomas, Tina Fields, and Leasha Viers. _ A NIGHT OF BEAUTY Missy Thomas — Eighth Grade, Pam Owens — Soph., Leasha Viers — Sen., Lisa Thomas — Sen., Tina Fields — Sen., Cindy Stanley — Junior, Sherry O’quinn — Freshman THIS NIGHT WAS OURS BECAUSE The Juniors worked hard to make the night of May 9, I98I a big success. REPLI N TED TIGEREYE CREATORS The 1982 an nual staff worked hard creating their version of the Tigereye. Each member got it togeth- er, but usually forgot where they put it. Rushing to meet deadlines and trying to decide which pictures to use, often became frustrating. Everyone worked closely together which occassionally was cause for slight irritations, but they were all unified at the end of their creation. : We hope each page represents a special memory for each individual at H.H.S. Duane — Watching everyone else work. Tigereye Staff 159 REFLECTIONS OF THE YEAR Though we have come to a close, we have a few special memories that will always stay with us: trying to get Mary quiet Keeping Duane in the room constantly laughing at Tim, Russell, and Steve and trying to get along with each other. We would like to thank Mr. David Yates and Mr. Ronnie Bartley for letting us get away with things, Mr. Danny Boring for helping us understand, Mr. Andy Turner for all the sports pictures, Miss Edwards for cleaning up our mess, but most of all, Mrs. Slusher for helping us meet deadlines and being so sweet and nasty! Thank you staff.
