SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMEIS A student of Bluefield College and Clinch Valley College, Mr. Butch Kiser graduated with an A.A. degree and a B.A. degree. He teaches Government to all our Seniors. Mr. Kiser is also Head Varsity Foot¬ ball Coach. He enjoys fishing and riding and waxing his jeep, but more than anything Coach Kiser is interested in football . . . football . . . football! A man of many talents describes Mr. Zane Counts. He attended Clinch Valley College and East Tennessee State University. He graduated from college with a B.S. degree, and he teaches World History and Sociology classes. Mr. Counts is a sponsor of the Beta Club, and he enjoys hunting, fishing, and painting. He is well hked by all his stu¬ dents. Mr. Maynard Owens is a graduate of the University of Tennessee. He received a B.S. degree and teaches World Geography and United States History. Mr. Owens likes to go Fishing and hunting, and he always has a tall tale to relate to his students. 18

SEE DEPARTMENT SCIENCE D Mr. Darrell Gray Silcox was a student of the University of Western Kentucky. He re¬ ceived a B.S. degree and teaches Earth Science and Bio¬ logy. He is a sponsor of the A.M.P.C. Photography Club. He has given much of his time to helping the Annual Staff in developing pictures. Mr. Silcox enjoys sports, hunting, and photography. As a guidance counselor and a Biology II teacher, Mrs. Betty F. Deel has a lot of work to do. Not only does she have her job, but she also has many outside interests such as sewing, woodcarving, ceramics, baking, quilting, and cooking. She has a B.S. degree in Biology and a minor in geography from East Tennessee State University. Mrs. Deel is-the sponsor of the 4-H Club and has done post graduate work in Biology at East Tennessee State University. 17

r SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTME Mr. William R. McCarty, Jr. attended both Hiwassee Col¬ lege, where he received an A.A. degree, and East Tennessee State University where he graduated with a B.S. degree. He teaches United States His¬ tory and sponsors the Mono¬ gram Club. Mr. McCarty spent two years in the United States Army before teaching at Haysi. He enjoys sports, weight¬ lifting, and reading, and he is Assistant Varsity Football Coach and Track Coach. AGRICULTURE DEPARTMEN1 A new Agriculture teacher is Mr. William Allen Doss. He attended VPI and SU and received a B.S. degree in Agriculture Education. Mr. Doss is a spon¬ sor of the FFA, and he enjoys hunting, fishing, and motorcycle racing. Mr. Ray McAllister graduated from Emory Henry College. He then stayed 2 years in the Army, spending 16 months in Korea. He went to VPI for 2 years studying Agriculture; he has a B.S. degree. Mr. McAllister spent several years operating a small fam¬ ily farm. He taught at Bland and Flatwood, Virginia and then came to teach at Haysi.
