GUIDANCE DEPARTMENT GUI Our Director of Guidance and good friend Mrs. Negatha Gour- ley Powers, is always ready to listen and give advice. She re¬ ceived her Bachelor of Science from East Tennessee State Uni¬ versity and a Masters degree from the University of Florida. She is a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, which is a National Hon¬ or Society of Women Teachers. She also belongs to Psi Chi. Mrs. Powers enjoys reading and weav¬ ing. She is interested in Research in Geneology. She also likes garden¬ ing, crossword puzzles, and playing scrabble. Mrs. Powers shall always be remembered for her guidance, help, and under¬ standing, without which none of us would be where we are today. AUGUST AUGUST Aside from being our assistant Guidance Counselor, Mrs. Betty Deel also teaches advanced Biology. She received her B.S. degree at East Tennessee State University with a major in bio¬ logy and a minor in geography. She did post-graduate work in biology at ETSU and in guidance at the University of Virginia. Mrs. Deel has an imense number of outside interests and activities. She sponsors the 4-H Club at school and is a member of the Crewettes. She has interests in handicrafts such as woodcarving, decoupage, embroidery, ceram¬ ics, and pottery. Mrs. Deel is an extremely talented and likeable person and we as students are proud to have her with us at Hay si High. -V- '

ADM IN IS TRA TION ADMIN IS 1 Mr. Erdman W. Mullins is a man well qualified for his position as Principal of Haysi High School. He received a B.S. and M.S. degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, State University. In addition to one year of graduate work, he is presently involved in all school activities. He is especially active in the Band Boosters and the Athletic Boosters Club. He is a member of the Board of Directors, Haysi Kiwanis, and the Haysi Town Council. Mr. Mullins is Vice-Mayor of Haysi and the spends a lot of his time working with the Dickenson Education Asso¬ ciation. Mr. Finis McCoy, our Assistant Principal, graduated from LMU and ETSU where he received his Bachelor and Masters degrees. He has been associated with different schools for the past 36 years. “My interest is my work,” says Mr. Mc¬ Coy, who enjoys hunting, gardening, collecting guns and knives, and working in his orchard. He is a Mason and a member of the United Commercial Travelers. Our school secretary is Miss Patsy Kilgore. She is one of the key factors in the smooth operation of the school. 10

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT ENG With a B.A. degree, Mrs. Jewell Askins is well qualified for her job. She received her degree from Clinch Valley College. In addition to teaching English 10 12, she also instructs German I II classes and is a sponsor of the Pep Club, Book Club, and Junior Class. This year, Mrs. Askins helped the Annual Staff greatly. She enjoys reading, writing, and cooking. Mr. Bill Wright is a new addition to our English department. He is also the advisor of the Annual Staff and a sponsor of the Senior Class. Mr. Wright attended East Tenn. State University and the University of Va. He has a B.S. degree. His interests are fishing, hunting, golf, and flying. Mr. John Johnson prepares the 8th and 9th graders for their other years of high school English. He has a B.S. degree which he received from Pikeville College.
