We would like to show you on these few pages our thoughts and images of the past year, all the things we’ve shared together. We leave to you the joy of remembering these changes, and your “Life At The Top of the Hill”. HAYSI PUBLIC LIBRARY HAYSI. It was also com¬ mon to see friends riding back and forth to school to¬ gether, enjoying getting home earlier. However, an¬ other means of transportation was the familiar yellow school bus, a popular way of traveling. Students hurry to their cars to make a quick get away. By the 3:15 bell, everyone is ready to go home. Jack Colley rides again. Nancy and Sue Sutherland wait for their ride home. 4 FUN , FOOD Thirty minutes out of each day was spent in sheer heaven by many students at Haysi. They enjoyed a hearty meal prepared by a skillful staff. The thirty minutes at lunchtime were always welcomed by the smokers. The only time alloted for cigarette smokers was before and after school and during the lunch periods. James Hill and David Hall enjoy a cigarette after lunch. GLORY. ... A group of 8th graders have fun getting together and talking while eating lunch. 5 School Spirit—Abounds Mr. Mullins directs outdoor pep rally Ronnie Bartley and Nancy Hudson show school spirit on Country Bumpkin Day. The Spirit of Youth. It envelopes a school with motivation and pride which seem unreal to a generation of realists. It serves as the life thread for an age that tells it like it is. Haysi’s spirit is vibrant, steeped in tradition, yet deeply concerned with building a future for those here now and those yet to come. Carter Branham takes his turn at the Deacon smash-up car. Keith O’Quinn and Preston Rose play Bluegrass music at pep rally on Country Bumpkin Day 6 I ' ve Never Gone to a Teacher for Help That That Teacher Didn ' t Help Me, J. Belcher Mr. Smith is always willing to help. The faculty of HHS offered more to students than just their teaching abil¬ ity. They were willing to help some¬ one with a problem, even if it meant sacrificing some of their own time. They were dedicated, to say the least, to preparing the students for the rough roads after high school. Though their schedules were heavy, they often found time for extracurricu¬ lar activities. Despite family, and school, these ac¬ tivities gave the faculty of HHS the freedom they deserved to maintain their individuality. MR. HAROLD BYERS INSPECTION, RESPECTION Mr. Harold Byers is always willing to help those students who ask for his help. He has an in¬ terest in every student and spreads his time evenly among all of them. Mr. Byers inspires those he teaches, making them want to learn and put forth that extra effort. Even though Mr. Byers is qualified for other higher paying jobs, instead he chose teaching as his profession. We should be thankful to him for his patience and all the time and interest he has taken in us. He puts the students on the same level as he does himself and the other teachers. For all that he has done for us we feel he more than deserves to have dedicated to him our “1976 Life At The Top Of The Hill”. 8 Teach Us. Show Us. Guide Us. Mold Us. The only team to give them com¬ petition was Lebanon. We feel that they will be just as strong next season. But regret to lose 3 seniors, Jedda Belcher, Portia Burnett, and Linda O’quinn. As coach, Judy Compton says, “I would have to say a job well done by my players. I feel we had good team effort throughout the season. I can now look back and see things I would have done differently. But I wouldn’t have wanted any of my girls to be any dif¬ ferent. The mutual respect they had for me and for each other was out¬ standing. We pulled together as a team and stayed together through some tough moments.” So it is evident that this team doesn’t like to lose. We hope that they continue to bring championship trophies to Haysi High School. Jedda Belcher goes in for an easy lay-up. Sue Sutherland dribbles in close against Jonesville. The team set some records, by most points scored 241 for a 24.1 average and least amount scored against them 166 for a 16.6 average. The team had all of the essen¬ tials needed to have a winning season including great hustle and long hours of practice. They set many goals and accomplished most of them. After downing Honaker the Tiger offense exploded for 52 points against Ervinton. In the second and ninth games we shut out our op¬ ponents. The Tigers then closed out their regular season with their second spectacular romp over St. Paul (48-12). Individually two Tiger players captured team records. Ricky Owens holds records for most yards rushing, 877, most points scored by a player, 100, most touchdowns, 15. VARSITY SQUAD BATTLES MOST DIFFICULT AND DEMANDING SEASON Coach Norman Mullins and the Haysi Tigers faced its most difficult season in a number of years. The 3-12 re¬ cord was a let down to the school and the boys on the team, especially the seniors. Dedication, leadership, ability and character are necessary qualities for a winning season and year. We feel that in the beginning we were lacking in some of these qualities. This year’s team was led by seniors Freddie Sutherland and Philip Sutherland. Fred said, “Playing basketball is a lot of fun to me, like a lot of other things are fun to others. The three years I have spent on varsity have been very rewarding. It’s kind of disheartening when you really work hard for something and it doesn’t work out.” Even though the team had an upsetting season the coaches feel that as a whole, the team learned to cooperate and will benefit from their experience. 35 Seniors Philip Sutherland, Freddie Sutherland and Ricky Owens take advice from Coaches Bill Deel and Norman Mullins. Going against the Ervinton Rebels the starters for the game show their “Tiger Spirit!” Steve Potter walks off the court after a hard-fought game. 36 J.V. CHEERS LEAD FOR VARSITY FOOTBALL Tigger the Tiger, better known as Karen Stanley is always around to cheer the Tigers on to victory. This year’s Football Cheerleaders managed to keep the spirit of Haysi high. They have worked long hard hours in preparation for the games and pep rallies. They have cheered their team to winning victories and have learned to accept the agony of defeat. But to be a cheerleader, is a victory over all. Kathy Kiser, Debbie Branham, Nancy Colley and Tammy Fuller ‘keep the spirit alive!’ VARSITY BASKETBALL CHEERLEADERS Regina O’Quinn, Portia Burnett, Jedda Belcher, and Sandy Sykes show the smiles of success. Sandy Sykes, Jedda Belcher, Portia Burnett, Regina O’Quinn, Bridgette Mullins are the communication when it comes to the players and the fans. The ' 75-’76 basketball cheerleaders have proven to be a vital part of our team by boosting the school’s spirit. We are proud to have such an influencing and determined group of girls. We hope that in the future the forthcoming cheerleaders will have the same school spirit and drive. We take this opportu¬ nity to thank two seniors, Portia Burnett and Jedda Belcher, who have contributed more than their share to our school spirit. 42 JUNIOR VARSITY Linda Viers works hard on school spirit signs. Fortaste of The Future With the close of the school year, the Seniors faced an ending to one part of their lives. The situation was new and a little frightening. Many found them¬ selves wishing that graduation would never come. Some chose to attend col¬ lege after high school. Others were al¬ ready trained for jobs at the vocational school. A Little Bit of Everything Lonnie Viers and Victor Wallace attend a special as¬ sembly program held on Parent’s Day. Richard Rasnick always knows exactly what he is talking about. But Giles Wallace, Billy Viers and Gurty Turner know better. Tammy Fuller is nervous, but Mattie Charles is confident that she passed government. Becky Puckett got an A in government. Key The Door Closes . . . As we walk through these halls for the last time, we glance into each room and re¬ member . . . the teachers, the lessons, the exams we passed—and some we didn’t. The friends we made, the fun and the laughter. We remember what we learned—and what we didn’t, the songs we sang, and those that were sung for us. We remember the study halls, the Friday 3:15 bell. We remember the football games, the basket¬ ball games, the soc-hops that always followed. We remember the proms, the Home¬ coming Dances, and the class parties. We remember the graduations, the Senior Day, the struggles, and the triumphs. We remember the tear-stained eyes after grad¬ uation. We wonder about the 22 classes before ours, whether they really wanted to leave. Then we ask ourselves if we really want to leave. The door closes behind us, our memories are all we have left. Mary Jo Roberts, Carolyn Davis, Ronald Thomas, and Laura Turner discuss today’s events during homeroom period. Donald Duncan, Debi Branham, Jedda Belcher, and Philip Sutherland discuss the circumference (or maybe the diameter) of this basketball. SENIORS Charles O’Quinn, Levi Hall, Robert Kiser and Ermel Owens, gather around the heater, but as usual there is no heat. Nancy Colley sneaks up behind Clauetta Gil¬ bert. Questions, questions, and more questions were being asked. Everyone was interested in knowing what we were going to do. We had quite a few questions of our own..Do we have enough money for everything, when will it be, what is the theme going to be??? But onward we went, to begin our decoration of the gym. This seems to be a declared holiday for the Juniors; to get out of class for two days we would decorate the whole school! It took a lot of time and patience on the part of Mrs. Lana Taylor, Mrs. Velma Crabtree, and Mr. Lee Deel to achieve our goal; but when the last of the crepe paper was hung, and the last final detail was in place, we all stood back and looked at ourselves being brought into a Hawaiian nightclub-—and it was beautiful. Thanks to many helpers we had; we fulfilled and carried out our plans: to reveal . . . “The Tiki Room Luau” 157 IT’S BEEN FUN . . . When “Life At The Top Of The Hill” was begun it was decided that this page be de¬ voted to all those people who made it possible, for one person cannot do it alone. It was no secret that we had many problems and lost a few people along the way. With a new sponsor as inexperienced as ourselves we had to learn from our mistakes and finally come together in one major effort to produce the biggest and best year¬ book Haysi has ever had. Without the diligence on the part of my staff, this book would be one of blank pages. No one but they can realize what hundreds of hours of work, true devotion to a cause, and self-sacrifice can mean. I owe more to them than I can ever repay. I would also like to thank: —Mr. William Wright, who always took the responsibility for our mistakes and helped us beyond belief. —Mr. Butch Kiser and Mrs. Lana Taylor for allowing myself and the annual staff out of so many classes. —Mr. Erdman Mullins and Mr. Finnis McCoy for being so understanding about our many trips to town. —Miss Patsy Kilgore for taking time out to count and receive our money. —The teachers for being so tolerant of the many classes we interrupted. —The many merchants and businesses who really made this book possible.
