BELCHER We proudly present to you, our fellow classmates, your 1967 THUNDERBOLT. Travel with us through these pages and see that here are your memories,.. your hopes. ..dreams.. .ambitions. ..heartaches. ..successes... failures. This was our high school! Each day that you are away from HHS, may this book keep alive the wonderful memories; and may it draw the friends, who were dear to you, back into your thoughts. “These few brief months will live for us in later years, as we have lived for them today. To be re- membered long after we ourselves have been forgotten. The legacy we leave for all to see, the part of us that remains forever here.” To all those who have labored to make this annual possible--our staff, sponsor, and many others--we wish to express our deepest thanks. J iuxJ d. Z Jm ' Co-Editors Dedication Quietly efficient, self-effacing, always helpful and interested in showing us the way — that is how we, the Senior Class of 1967-- think of you. Because of these qualities and your genuine concern for our intellectual development, we dedicate this edition of the Thunderbolt to you, MRS. VIOLET TARWATER And her love for people. Mrs. Tarwater, hard at work With her love for books... 6 ( )e Safute It seems only yesterday I can remember how you kissed the hurt place to make it well, kept my “sweetheart” a deep dark secret between only us two, laughed with me when I needed laughter, and always I could depend upon your sympathy when things weren’t going quite right. Thank you for the laughter, the friendship. Thank you for the tears and the understanding. Thank you for the love, confidence, wisdom, and as strange as it seems to say it, thank you for the discipline that has guided me as a child and as an adolescent. This is the framework you have so selflessly and lovingly laid- -encouragement, love, discipline, and hundreds of other memories you have given me through these years. May we always steadfastly strive to fill this ftamework in the patient way you have laid it for us. We salute you, MOM and DAD. 7 Sponsor, Clayton Colley; Co-Editors, Gloria Viers, Rebecca Belcher; Business Managers, Diana Taylor, Glenda Mullins; Chief Typist, Linda Powers; Typists, Patricia Sutherland, Dianah Breeding, Joan Ratliff; Artist, Susie Farmer; Classes Editors, Jeanie Ratliff, Rebecca Edwarda; Organizations Editor, Susie Short; Sports Editors, Darrell Harrison, Donald Anderson; Activities Editor, Ruth Ramey. We have striven hard and long to make this one of the best yearbooks that the students of Haysi High ever produced. We hope this edition of the Thunderbolt will provide pleasant memories to all students, not only now but always. Because he has worked so untiringly and given of his ability so willingly, we wish to extend our deepest and sincerest thanks to Mr. Clayton Colley, our sponsor. 8 :S u per in ien cfen s 7 tessape PAUL W. SKEEN received his A.B. from Marshall Uni- versity and his M.A. from Peabody College. I congratulate you on having completed the necessary requirements for gradu- ation from the Haysi High School. I feel it is an honor. It is an honor not given to you, but one which you have earned. I urge you to continue your education after graduation. I urge you to develop your potential to the fullest. I urge you to make the most of every opportunity. Finally, I urge you to do your best in whatever endeavor you may pursue. May you always be the type of person who will bring honor and credit not only to yourself but to those who have known you. Good luck to each of you. PAUL W. SKEEN Principal ' s JlTessape C. C. SHORT attended East Ten- nessee State Uni- versity, University of Tennessee where he received his B. S.; V.P.I. and the University of Virginia where he received his M. A. Dear Seniors, When you entered the eighth grade it was apparent that your class would equal or surpass the records established by the top graduating classes of the past. Congratulation to one and all on exceeding the ex- pectations of the faculty and administration. Success in high school, however, does not insure future success. This is not the time to rest on your laurels. With the major portion of your life yet in front of you, concentrate on selecting attainable, worth- while goals; then apply yourself as you have throughout high school, until your goal is reached. Never be satisfied with “status quo.” Accept and take part in inevitable transition. In todays’ modern world it is not possible to become stationary; either you move forward or slide backward. C. C. Short, Principal I ■ T ylssis anf CPrincipaPs JlCessape LEE DEEL attended Tennessee Polytechnic Insti- tute where he re- ceived his B. S. degree; he also at- tended East Ten- nessee State Uni- versity. It has been five gratifying years working with this Senior group. Y ou have gained a step in your life which is of most importance. I hope your schooling at Haysi will prove to be a key which you can cherish through life. Let your experiences here be ones which will inspire sound decisions and at the same time evade pitfalls of life. Again, you have my congratulations and best wishes. I shall miss my contact with you. You have added much to the school’s program of studies, activities, and athletics. Many of you have been outstanding in scholarship, sense of responsibility, and continuing growth in maturity and knowledge. All of you have formed an integral part in our school program. I am proud of you for having had the stamina and ambition to ascend this far on the educational ladder. You have acquired a great deal of proficiency; there is much more to be learned. May you have the strength of character, the faith of your convictions and a reservoir of courage to face whatever is in store for your future. I shall continue to be interested in your activities, your progress, and your problems. fo(M ES Auicfance Ass s an s Mrs. Betty Deel Mr. Howard Harrison Mrs. Eula Phillips 13 I OCy.G. Coo .
