PRESENTING THE THUNDERBOLT OF 1954 EDITED BY SENIORS OF HAYSI HIGH SCHOOL YEARBOOK HOUSE . . . PUBLISHERS . . . KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI HAYSI PUBLIC LIBRARY HAYQI VinniMIA CLASS MOTTO In ourselves our future lies.” CLASS FLOWER CLASS COLORS Orchid Cerise and Silver CLASS YELL Ram it in; jam it in; Seniors’ heads are hollow. Cram it in; slam it in; still there’s more to fo llow. Sing with us; make a fuss. We are so elated. Say, Good-bye, Haysi High.” Now we’re graduated. To one whose untiring and unceasing devotion to the betterment of our school and the advance- ment of its pupils has made her a favorite among students and faculty alike; To one whose sapient counseling, exalted lead- ership, warm personality and personal sacrifices have endeared her to everyone who has come into her orbit; To one whose guidance and tutelage have been an inspiration to us, we, the graduating class of 19 54, with pride, gratitude and appreciation, re- spectfully dedicate this annual, the Thunderbolt, to our class sponsor, Mrs. Negetha G. Powers. — 3 — Even though you have labored under great handicaps these five years, you have come through with flying colors, and I am justly proud of you. It is my hope that you will continue to go forward to meet the challenge of the hour and may success reward your every effort. This year’s issue of The Thunderbolt is a worthy successor to all the productions that have preceded it, and I am sure that all the readers will join me in hearty congratu- lations to this year’s staff. Best wishes always, M. Tarwater, Principal 4 aaaaa plWiriKTm iaa2!3iBggaiii Our School — its friendly walls hold fond memories of happy hours, cherished friendships, serious endeavor and lasting achievement. We, the last class to graduate from the old building, are happy to complete our courses within the walls that we entered five years ago for there is a spirit and a tradition that lingers and permeates each nook and corner and we feel that we have helped to establish it. SCHOOL SONG In the shadows of the mountains Reared against the sky Stands our dear old Haysi High School As the years go by. Sound the chorus, speed it onward We will never fail Hail to thee, our Haysi High School Hail to thee, all Hail! In thy halls we formed our friendships Dear old High School home And to thee we pledge our hearts Never more to roam. — 5 — ELAINE T. DUTY English, Hist., Science, Radford, B.S. U. of Va. JERRY MULLINS Artist JOE MULLINS Club Editor V Senior Class History August 25, 1949 was a momentous day for Haysi High School. Into its tired old halls trooped 120 rosy-cheeked cherubs, brimming with vitality and energy. The teachers vied with each other for the privilege of working with these youthful savants. The lucky ones were Mrs. Jane Janey, Science; Miss Marjorie Matney, Math.; Arthur Counts, History and Kathleen Cruise, English. Some forty-odd of this group learned so much the first year that they did not report back with the rest of the class when the fall term opened in 1950. There were new faces behind the teacher’s desks this year: Milton Owens, Science; Wayne Ar- rington, Math.; Scott O’Connor, English. Only Mr. Counts had survived the first year’s ordeal. At the end of that year, two of ' the teachers decided that Banking and Dentistry were far more relaxing than H.H.S. and so they left, never to return. Casual- ties so far, five teachers, sixty students. Came August 1951. Again the old cowbell resounded merrily through the halls, and again sixty pairs of feet responded eagerly to its call. By this time, some brave souls had become so acclimated that they ventured across the frail structure which spans the tempestous Russell Fork. Here they sought further knowledge in the realms of Home Ec., and Agriculture, under the capable Miss Browning and Mr. Mullins. Those who were not yet ready to cross over the river” remained on the other side under the tutelage of Miss Janski and Mr. Tarwater (History), Scott (Mutt) O’Connor and Amos (Jeff) Hawkins (English), Mrs. Cain and Mr. Willis (Commercial) and Mr. Robinson (Math.). August 1952 . Juniors! Now nobody but the Seniors could look down on them. It was such fun to direct the eighth graders to the proper room or reprove them for pushing in the halls. They edited The Party Line, they sold magazines to finance the annual banquet and they got a taste of show business” when they presented The Adorable Imp.” Then came the climax of the year, the Junior-Senior Banquet. For the first time in the school’s history, the girls came glittering and lovely in their formals. August 1953 . Forty-five dignified (?) Seniors settled in room 3. There was a great deal to do this year and a little hard to settle down to it. In October there were Christmas cards to sell and the Halloween Carnival to sponsor. In December, there were shiny new rings on every finger, school emblem shirts to sell and the Senior play, Mr. Beane From Lima.” There was the photographer to make picmres for the annual, The Thunderbolt,” bigger and better than ever. There is more to come — The Junior-Senior Banquet, the Senior trip, com- mencement and then ?????? This will writ, on the fifteenth day of December in the year of our Lord, 1953. — 23 — The story you are about to read is true. Only your glasses should be changed to pro- tect your eyes. My name is George Mullins. I’m a cop. I work out of No. 13 on the hoot owl shift. At 1:01 on December 31, 1969, Chief Jerry M. called me into his office. He told me to have a seat, at 1:03 D.A. Ralph H. arrived. The chief briefed me on the situation. U.S. Sec. to the Treas., Bill A., was suspected of defrauding the government of about a million a week. The chief just wanted me to get the facts. It was suspected that Anderson’s sec., Mary M., was getting most of the benefits of the loot. In turn. Miller’s sec., Charles D., all at once began to drive Cadillacs and buy his sec., minks. I hopped a cab down to Ciros. The cab driver, Margie S., a retired wrestler, pulled up to a screech- ing halt in front of the joint. I was glad that ride was over. I just wanted the facts, not a funeral. I stepped through the door and the bouncer, Trulah E., without a giggle, asked me if I were old enough to come in. I flashed my badge and said, I just want the facts, mam.” I stared around the room. The cigarette girls, Dolores R., Miss Chop Suey of 1968, Betty B., ex-Martin Bomberette, and Rachel D., were all lingering close to the table of Jake B. and Joe M., recent multi-millionaire oil men. I sauntered over to the proprietress, Lillian C., and began to question her. She said it was time for the floor show. I ordered a shot of Red eye.” As the bartender, Margaret B., poured it, the floor show began. The orchestra, directed by Lois E., heralded the entrance of the unsurpassa- ble opera singer, Patsy K. After her rendition of Figero,” the incomparable impersona- tor, Louise B., gave a series of imitations, ending with Minnie Pearl. The audience held its breath as Carroll E. and Dolly H. Edwards and Sons did the most pulsative trapeze act of the new era. As the stage was cleared for the next act, I glanced around the room. At 2:07, everything seemed so so; nothing suspicions. Over in one corner, Fayne E. and companion Shirley H., Oscar winners for their performances in ’Romeo and Juliet,” were lighting cigarettes with $100 bills. At the next table, K.R.S., inventor of a new and fast way to age” liquor, sat with Retha M., Patsy O., and Madge E. All three were old maids but still in there pitching. Aha! there he was! The fellow I was looking for. I asked him his name. He said his name was Kenneth O’Quinn. I asked him where he got all his dough. ’’Shootin’ pool, ” he replied. The show began again and in the confusion, my man got away. I decided to watch the show before I went after him. Chorus girls, Sally M., Evelyn Y., Shirley E. and Glechia M., supplemen- ted the dance number of Leamond R., new Fred Astaire, and Betty O., Grable’s success- or. I liked the costumes on the chorus girls. I moved closer. I wanted to get the facts. Then Joyce F., Susie S., Joyce T., and Rose H., played musical instruments that they had devised and named. They had a ukitar, a saxiano, a manjo and a viokiphone. On my way out I bumped into a couple of my friends from the press. Gene Y., and Mary P. They were writing an article on the life of a married T.V. actress and using as examples, Lois A., Lucille B., and Nancy B. I bought a paper at the corner and read the headlines. Joel T., head of the poultry dept., of the U.S., said he had devised a method to get hens to lay eggs already scrambled, feed them Mix-Masters. When I got back to the office, ace detective, Jim C. already had O’Quinn. I asked Jim’s sec., Peggy S., where he had caught O’Quinn. In the poolroom,” she said. I went to see the chief. The D.A. was with him .They were congratulating Church. Chief snarled at me. Fine way to start a new year, ” he said. I just tried to get the facts,” I replied. 24 — Elaine T. In the past years almost every high school practiced softball and had very good teams. But this year only two high schools in the county had teams that played inter-school competition. These schools were Ervington and Haysi. Softball has been declining as a school sport. Haysi’s softball team didn ' t come out on top this year in the two games that were played, but the rest of Haysi High think, their effort was tops. Haysi High knows that the teams are great, and all of Haysi’s stu- dent and faculty are with them all the way. The two most outstanding softball players of Haysi High are George Mullins, shortstop; and Glen Anderson, first base . The softball squad is composed of James Mullins, Travis Tiller, Farley Deel, Lowell Bartley, Glen Anderson, Paul Charles, George Mullins, Joe Mullins, Roger Sykes, Lee Turner, Ronald Sutherland, Wilson Yates, Fayne Edwards, Bob Wiliis, Clinton Fuller, Gene Raymond Wright, Rodney Gene Taylor, Leamond Ramsey, Billy Kilgore, Paul Raines and Mr. Homer Deel, Coach. I 37 — GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAM (Kneeling) Lillian Counts, Madge Edwards, Cleta Hay, Shirley Taylor, Betty Puckett, Shirley Hay, (Standing) Coach, H. David Willis, Lois Arrington, Anna Mae Kilgore, Betty Barton, Patsy Kilgore, Darlene Sykes, Fayne Edw’ards, Mgr. (Absent) Lema Counts, Jeanette Edwards, Jean Hay, Betty Taylor, Lucille T. Belcher. The starting team is Betty Barton, Lucille Belcher, Madge Edwards, forw ards Shirl- ey Taylor, Patsy Kilgore and Eillian Counts, guards. The Haysi girls team won 12 out of 16 games this season. Most teams would con- sider this an excellent feat, but because of the records established by their predecessors, it is looked upon as a mediocre season. Due to bad w ' eather, the girls were lucky to get two days practice a week, thus allowing lesser teams with better practice facilities to sur- pass them. Nevertheless, in only one of the four games lost did their opponents out- score them by more than three points. The girls lost by only twm points in the county finals. In only one game this season were they defeated before the final gun. The girls always played hard and in a sportsmanlike manner and were noted for their ability and fighting spirit. Next year, their coach, H. D., will have to start from scratch, as all the starting team except Shirley Taylor, graduate. This season has been one of the most successful in the history of the school. The boys in pre-tourney and county tournament play have won all of their 15 games. The District Tournament is yet to be played as we go to press. The boys, despite their handi- cap of not having a gym, have beaten such teams as Clintwood, Ervinton, and Clinchco, who have in the past posed an almost unsurmountable obstacle. This year was the first time since 1935 that they have beaten a Clintwood boys team. Although they lost out in the first round of the County Tournament, the students, faculty and fans are proud of the boys and their fine fighting, competitive spirit. The first team is composed of guards. Jack Hay, George Mullins; Eorwards, Lowell Bartley and K. R. Sutherland and center Glenn Anderson. Co-Captains are K. R. and George. On the night of May 8, 1953, the annual Junior-Senior banquet was held at the Royal Cafe. All teachers were present and all Juniors and Seniors except four. A delic- ious meal was served by three alumni of H.H.S. The entertainment was provided by speakers from both the Junior and Senior clas- ses.
