All, with the exception of Bill Clifford, finished their first year here. Beginning our Sophomore year, we found our class diminishing by the loss of Kent Butler and Phillip Rice who transferred to the Agricultural school at Curtis. During this year Howard McHarness joined Uncle Sam's armed forces. Florence Jones moved to Alma and planned to complete her schooling there. Genevieve Pace discontinued her schooling during the second semester of the year. The year passed swiftly and we found ourselves Juniors. In our Junior year we acquired a new member, Ted Hanley, who had pre- viously attended Grant High School. Also, we lost, during the year, llla Hopkins and Wayne Beezley who enrolled in the Wauneta High School. Dick Schneider, due to a hunting accident was unable to return to school. Mark Weston became one of our nations fighting men. During the year, we gave our Junior play, Meet My Wives, a comedy. We entertained the Seniors at the annual Junior- Senior banquet on April the 28th at the I.0.0.F. Hall, with a nautical theme and the decorations in blue and white. - At the beginning of the Senior year we found that we had acquired two new membersg Evelyn Kinney, who was formerly enrolled in the Wauneta High School. Illa Hopkins, a former member of the class returned from Wauneta and has decided to remainwith us. The Senior play, The Eve Of St. Mark , was very dramatic. It seemed to be a great success. It was a play representing life in the armed forces and of the ones at home who waited for their loved ones to return. On Friday, April the 5th, at 2:00 A. M. the Senior class departed from Hayes Center on their Sneak Day. We went to Lincoln, Nebraska. It was fun for everyone. Time passed too swiftly however and the return to Hayes Center came too soon for everyone. We were guests at a banquet April 13, 1946, presented by the Junior class. With a western theme, the decorations were brown and gold to represent our class colors. The waiters and waitresses were dressed in Cowboy and Cow- girl costumes. A very dellcious meal was served. The Baccalaureate service was held Sunday Evening, May 12th with Reverend Vorphal delivering the message. On May 16th, Commencement Exercises were held at the High School, with Herbert Cushing, the President of the Kearney State Teachers College, delivering the address. Now we approach the end of our high school days with a feeling of sadness for we realize that the time has come when we must part from the many friends which we have made through the years as high school students. Al- though we may be separated by distances, we shall ever hold dear, the memories of those comrades who have come to mean so much to us. 5 ,. . 1- . . ., . . -,'?'VFHJ, , gf V 11 H-J' I W .1.,. v. Duane Blxler wills his athletic ability to Vaughn Wilson. LeRoy Fisher wills his extra height to Ruth Carter. Omalea Fornoff wills her mlschievlous spirits to Maydine Potter. Rodney Gallagher wills his safe driving habits to Leonard Nelms. Ted Hanley wills his musical talent to Gary Maucher and his character impersonation to Harold Richards. Ila Hopkins wills her flirtatious manner to Alpha Lacey. Evelyn Kinney wills all her Professional Training to Marjorie Fisher. Dean Lawson wills his easy way with the women to bashful Curtis Bodeman Bill Leffler wills his pitch deck to Robert Repass. Donald Loomis wills his neatly combed hair to Charles Strop. Bob McDonald wills his deep voice to Richard Peterson. Twlla Mintling wills her beautiful red hair to Bonnie Reese and her gift of gab to Iris Pinn. Twlla Richter wills all her housekeeping troubles to Verna Dell Johnson. Arline Roe wills her Cheery smile to Eileen Hopkins. Vonda Wilson wills her excess energy to Jim McDonald. Duane Counce wills his woeful want for watermelon to Bernard Orman. In witness whereof, we have hereunto set our hand and seal this thirteenth day of April, in the year of our lord, one thousand nine hundred forty six. CLASS PROPHECY Recently I was looking through some of my old pictures and happened to run across our class picture. Thinking you might be interested I thought I would write and tell you what each one is doing. Of course you know of Ted's achievement but was I ever surprised when recently, while dancing at Coaconut Grove, the spotlight focused on the saxo- phone player and who should it be but Ted. I guess he is really making a name for himself with his band and all those jlve and Boogie-Woogie pieces. Bob McDonald is a professor at Oxford and so far has been the only man to prove Efnsteln's theory. He is now trying to discover a way to rebuild a split atom. Illa Hopkins is manager of a beauty parlor in the Lone Star State. Her husband is the very famous law enforcing officer and Illa spends a great deal of her time helping him track down desperadoes. Dean Lawson, better known as Man-Mountain-Dean is a famed wrestler ln Madison Square Garden. Having been married three times before, he re- cently married Sadie the Strangler who holds the womens wrestling title. I think she will be able to take care of Dean. C. working for the Secretary of Agriculture. In time I think she will hold that place in the President's Cabinet herself. Duane Bixler sings cowboy ballads over station D. O. P. E. Among the most popular of his original compositions are Round House Nellie and Twenty Years On The Wagon. . Evelyn Kinney made an airplane journey to Spain and while she was there a Spanish Millionare fell for her dark beauty and married her. Twila Richter is managing a chain of restaurants that extend from coast to coast. She especially caters to military personal. Bill Leffler seems to be running competition to Tommy Manville spending most of his time at the stagedoor waiting for the chorus girls. He is now en- volved in a suit for breach of promise. He has engaged the famed attorney, Honorable Rodney Gallagher as his defense Attorney. There is much spe- culation in Washington that the Honorable Gallagher will soon be appointed by the president as a member of the Supreme Court. Marilyn Alexander is a famous bare back rider in a circus. She seems to have designs on the sword swallower. LeRoy Fisher is living in the East and is at the head of THE FISHER UN- BREAKABLE LIGHT BULB manufacturing company. He married an eastern girl and they now have quadruplets. They are all girls and he named them Alice, Gladys, Hazel, and Florence. Omalea Fornoff is in California managing a string of race horses. Her horse, the Hayes County Rocket has made a name for himself by coming in just ahead of Bing Crosby and Bob Hope. Donald Loomis is the six foot six strong man of Iingling Brothers Circus. He is called Little Sampson. In his spare time he paints. He has received many honors in Paris with his paintings. No doubt you have seen Vonda Wilson in the movies. She has been working for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayor for seven years and she has a life contract with them. She says her last picture was the hardest one she had ever made. It was titled True Love. Arline Roe is now working for T. W. A. flying a mail and transport plane from Singapore to Cape Town, Africa. She seems to have a special interest in Singapore because she always manages to be there over the week ends. I have copywrited a new Super Comic magazine that is very beneficial to high school students. If you know of any teachers interested please send me a list of their names. I have already sent copies to Miss Ehler and Mrs. Counce. We hope to see you at our next alumni banquet that is to be held in our new school house. Sincerely, Dwayne E. Its members were to be found in many of the extra-curricular activities as well as carrying the regular courses of English, Mathematics, Latin, and Science. They have shown a fine cooperative spirit in all matters of school affairs and school conduct. While they performed creditibl me ti ul y, n on co d be made of several individuals who were outstanding in one or more activitiesg Athletics, D ti rama cs or Music. Several parties which served as social events were en joyed by all. - As we survey the past school year, we find it to have been one filled with profitable work and study, balanced with many happy associations. CLASS OFFICERS: President, Bob Thompson, Vice President, Mary ' Lou Kinney, Secretary Ka Treasurer Wanda Mosley. SPONSOR: Mrs. Chase. FRESHMEN CLASS Into the,Halls of Hayes County High, came twenty-four little, flustered Hn H I edg ngs on September 4th., 1945. They were destined to become the Freshmen of 1945. Truly they've exemplified the old saying green but growing in the fa ct that they've successfully passed that stage of not knowing what nor where and I dood it to some real accomplishments. For example, there are some promising scholars in the class 5 a good representation of the group are in Chorus and Bandg Leroy Bodemen, Duane Fisher, and Duane Cox have shown great potentiality in Athletics. Beverly Swanson and Dorothy Schuman have done outstand' ing work in dramatics. Some of the pleasant memories of this year which each member will carry with him on through the years are the enjoyable parties which were held in the High School Gym. BASKETBALL The Hayes County Cardinals had a very successful season this year, not so much in scores but in game spirit and sportsmanship. The team had twenty scheduled games and the interclass tournaments. The team was entered in the Class C basketball tournament at Culbertson and was defeated by Culbertson, who went ahead to win the tournament. Grant proved too strong in the Frenchman Valley tournament at Stratton. The first and second teams also were entered in the P.C.A. tournament at Madrid. The first team got the Consolation trophy and the second team won second place in their games. The most hotly contested game of the year was a game with Grainton in which Grainton won with a score of 34-33. Grainton came ahead in the last few seconds with a lucky long shot. The team this year was outstanding in team cooperation and sportsman- ship. All in all Hayes County High is very proud of them. The student manager for this season was Bob McDonald. The following boys played on the first team: Richard F. Peterson, left forward, Duane Bixler as, right forward, Bill Leffler, Center, Ted Hanley, left guard, and Leonard Nelms, right guard, with Harold Sexton and Dwayne Counce as substitutes. ' The second team consisted of Dwayne Counce, Don Loomis, Charles Strop, Harold Sexton, Bernard Kittle, Hugh Larid, Dick Mintling, Dick Counce, and Paul Glgax. The basketball schedule for 1946-45. Many times this year the mixed Chorus and small groups have been asked to perform. Most of these performances have been quite success- ful, but the Chorus faced the supreme test when they competed at the McCook music festival and came out very well. Some of the outstanding selections which were presented throughout the year were the Fred Waring arrangements of The Battle Hymn of The Republic, Let My People Go, ' Set Down Servant, Holy, Holy, Holy, I Dream of You, ' There Are Such Things, and other songs were: The World ls Waiting For The Sunrise, I Had A Little 'ram with The Lord, 'kentucky Babe. Some of the many appearances which we made were at the Commercial Club, on the first Thursday ln March, At the Missionary at the Congregational Church in the latter part of Octoberg Between acts of the Iunior play, by the Mixed Chorus. The musical small groups such as the Boy s quartet, the Girls Sextet, made appearances almost weekly at Missionary meetings and Commercial Club. The band made only one appearance at the annual election of the Bureau of Agriculture along with another appearance of the mixed Chorus which by this time had become a small sensation around town. Great hopes were generally held for the chorus when they went to McCook and they justlfled all hopes. Mr. Hanley tells us that from the existing talent he hopes to be able to develop a few solos and small group for the contest at McCook next year. There is a large amount of dormant talent among the students of Hayes County High that requires only development, and it is hoped that some of it will come t in th ou e music department next year which should be superior even to the one of this season. lm wr-v'wf'1:-f-'mea-f:r5'1f q+'ef ' ' 3,-,L-.lvx ,- 93 ,1halmod.hodul l3lltndllntHualoalulalnuqnll'l' gn 'u -:V U ' 1 all .
