Zx,.: 4- pf fSrimSOrt —-, The 1975-76 TIGER Honors the Past — Challenges the Future TABLE OF CONTENTS In this year when our nation is celebrat- ing its 200th year and our state is celebrat- ing its 100th year, we in Hayden High School are celebrating our 70th year. We honor our past and the first graduating class of 1909 - Gladys Blake Hofstetter, Ethel Wood Monson, Marabelle Shelton Enochs, and Wolcott Hooker - and all those gradu- ating classes down through the years. Classes whose graduates have excelled in all the professions and fields of business. There are doctors, engineers, nurses, edu- cators, lawyers, successful business men and women. We look with pride at our present and the 1976 graduating senior class. We challenge those classes who will come in the future. Let’s take pride in our past; take part in our future. Cover and division pages designed by Elaine Mulkey i Dedication The 1976 Hayden Annual is dedicated to all the students who have graduated from Hayden High School. We of the annual staff point with admiration to our past and the first graduat- ing class of 1909, and to all those graduating classes down through the years. We look with pride at our present and the 1976 senior class. We look with anticipation at those classes which will be coming in the future. Our alumni have added not only to the Hayden community but also to all communities in which they have chosen to live. We hope that Hayden High School has given each and every one the background in educa- tion that enabled them to become successful in the field of their choice and the inspiration to accept ideas and concepts to pursue what ever vocation and avocation desired. It is our sincere hope that all of our alumni, our present graduating class, and all future classes can say with pride that they were a graduate of Hayden High School. The Grandbouches The Hocketts Chuck Signs Pictured above are just a few of Hayden’s former graduates. These alumni and many others have a vital interest in the Hayden schools. Superintendent's Message to the Class of 1976 Dr. Gary Toothaker, Superintendent 0 SfT' fW MJVjS JV Ouvv$d Oo' - % M ySc V roI It seems richly appropriate to blend the past, present, and future into a theme for the Class of 1976 this Bicentennial year. As our country observes this milestone in our history, you might take time to reflect upon how the basis for this cele- bration is related to you. The unique elements of our country’s past are a part of you. After all, you rep- resent what is left of the Golden West. The independence, self-reliance, and the spirit of adventure are qualities that built the West; qualities which are part of your heritage. The present age represents a revival of reawakening and renewal goal-setting. These social processes are taking place with an emphasis upon the importance of successful traditions of the past. Change and difference are two things that can be said about the future. The challenge is determining WHAT should be changed and what should be different. That challenge is your, as is the future. May your choices be based upon wisdom and compassion. - Dr. Gary Toothaker Pf. Toothaker’s office is always open to those who need to see him. He feels that contact with students, teachers, parents, and members of the community i£ vital to having the best school possible. 3 Honor the Past We Point With Admiration to Those Graduates Girls' Basketball Champs - 1926 The Edison School was built in 1900. The Dis- trict was bonded for $2500 which completed the lower floor. The upper floor which was to be the high school was completed later. The building was used until 1921 when the seventh and eighth grades and the high school moved into the Hay- den Union High School. Edison School Haydens's school as it appeared in the 1920's was located where the Redstone Motel now stands. Girls’ Basketball - 1907 Back Row - Edna Hughes, Anna Smith. Who Excelled Hayden Union High School The Hayden Union High School built in 1921 was one of the most modern in all of Yampa Valley. As Hayden’s first water sys- tem was installed in the fall and winter of 1913-14, and the sewer system in 1921-22, the new high school was modern in all respects. It had a swimming pool, an excel- lent gymnasium, a science room, and many large classroooms. There have been many fine teachers and administrators and Hayden schools can be proud of the good scholar, ath- letes and students who have graduated pre- pared to accept the responsibilities of adult life. Pride in the Present Good Spirit at Homecoming Bonfire Victory in Football Art objects done by students shown during the 1975 Art Exhibit Appreciation for a good cook Community football pep rally The Past and the Present Challenge the Future Future Cheerleaders Prospects look good for the future Away with the past to make room for the future The Hayden Union High School was demolished in the winter of 1975-76. The future of the Hayden Schools depends on the continued support of the community and the active participation of administration, fac- ulty and students who accept the challenge of the future. Faculty and Students at Play School is not all work. There are many activities in which students, faculty, parents and members of the community participate. Play is just as important as work, and these pictures show that Haydenites can play. Working on Homecoming Float Mothers Involved in School A Quiet Moment Favorites Mr. and Miss H.H.S. Suzie Barnes and Steve Ball represent our school very well as Mr. and Miss H.H.S. Suzie is a cheer- leader, active in band, accompanies choir and is a member of Honor Society. Steve has been active in football and wrestling and is one of Hayden’s out- standing athletes. It is students like these who make us point with pride at our '76 class. Freshman Favorites Junior Favorites Vicki Morton and Bryan Ward represent the Junior class well, as both are out- standing students. Vicki is a cheerleader, Student Council secretary, active in speech, in Honor Soci- ety, in girls’ athletics, and choir. Bryan was All-Con- ference in football, played varsity basketball, is out for track, and is a member of Student Council. si v Sophomore Fa vorites Our sophomores are well represented by Karen Copeland and Tim Jacobs. Karen is a cheer- leader, is active in girls' sports, Student Coun- cil, and choir. Tim played football, is out for track, and is active in Student Council. These favorites are typical of our freshmen, bright eyed and naive. Carol Montieth, a friendly person, is active in girls' sports, choir, Student Council and Pep Club. David Wyman played basketball. Most Talented Georgiann Sanborn and Jerry Murphy are typical of students at Hayden High School, Georgiann is an outstanding athlete, an accomplished musician, participates in speech activities - plus being fun to have around. Jerry is an accomplished artist, plays piano and guitar, is involved in speech activ- ities, heads the 4-H group, and is always willing to help anyone who needs an extra hand. Miss Spirit Elaine Mulkey certainly is a student who really gets involved in all school activities. She not only has the spirit of an avid fan but also is a leader in many other activities. She is a majorette; a fine artist, designing the cover and division pages of the annual; a pep club member; and a good student. Mr. Sportsman Richard Smith typifies Mr. Sportsman. He was chosen Single A High School Football Player of the Year. But football is not his only sport. He is involved in wrestling, hunting, fishing and the training of horses. Richard's ready smile and happy disposition makes him Shyest These two, Theresa Kagie and Dave Funk, may be really shy, (they tried to hide from the cam- era) but they still add a lot to our school. Theresa is business man- ager of the annual, in speech, active in all girls' sports and in Pep Club. David is active in ath- letics and in band. Friendliest Cutest The smiles of these two, Anne Williams and Bill Henderson, show why they were cho- sen the friendliest. Both are nice to have around. Anne is drill leader of the drill team and president of the sophomore class. Bill is out for wrestling, vice-president of the senior class and plays guitar. You can see why these two, Judi Zehner and Kevin Deatherage, were chosen cutest. They are not only cute but very active in school affairs. Judi is a cheerleader, in band, speech, and in girls' athletics. Kevin is Head Boy, is active in speech, boys' ath- letics and plays guitar. Favorite Teachers Jean Koch and Bruce Yoast with their happy smiling faces show why they are the favorites. Mrs. Koch is not only an artist but also an avid skier. She is always willing to help any- one who she can. Bruce Yoast, a basketball buff and coach, also likes to hunt and fish. His new duties as acting principal of the grade school plus being head basketball coach will really keep him busy. Most Likely to Succeed Linda Rhodes and Mark Signs show why they will succeed. Linda is a top student scholasti- cally. She is interested in commercial sub- jects and president of FBLA and a member of Pep Club. Mark is interested in everything. He really likes math, science and is an active participant in all school activities. He is a member of Student Council and does more than his share in helping run school projects. Biggest Flirts Cindy Irwin and Rocky Bowdish are friendly and like people. They may be the biggest flirts but they are also interested in school activities. Cindy is in band and Pep Club. April Showers Bring May Flowers Theme for 1975 Prom King and Queen A banquet was held and decorated nicely. A large rainbow was behind the head table. The tables were decorated with yellow paper, and bou- quets of orange and yellow carnations in brown vases were placed on the tables. This made up a beautiful color scheme. The band for the prom was Sleepin Dogs of Denver. Raindrops falling from the sky, a fountain, a large rainbow and a fenced garden were the lovely decorations in the gym. Crown bearers were Lewis Wyman and Rebecca Weaver. Prom Royalty Mynon Moon, William Montieth, Rick Rienks, Sherri Haslem, Sherry Nay, Randy McDonald, Cathy Rickerby, Dennis Moore. Dody Brewster (Shayne Reinks) is about to graduate from the small college her grandfather founded, and, as his heir- ess, become the head of the Foundation which supports the college. As Chip Corwin, (Jerry Murphy) the young lawyer, is explaining her new duties, Mrs. Delehanty, (Elaine Mulkey) a kookie old lady appears, begging Dody to remove the Foundation’s support from the college and give it instead to her Institute. Murdock Faversham, (Tom Wyman) who will head the Institute is brought in and conducts a sample seance, during which Dody, participating against her better judgment, becomes possessed! Chip tries every available means to have Dody’s devil exorcised but to no avail. Speaking intermittently with a man’s voice, Dody intends to move the financial support, forcing the college to close - and worse, she has fallen in love with Murdock. Chip counters with desperate measures to save the college and win Dody back. During a hilarious exorcism, several surprising occurrences reverse the course of events. Others in the cast included: Vicki Morton, Dody's roommate: Vance Fulton, Dean of the College: Pat Zabel, a doctor; Joan Montieth, a psychi- atrist; Mark Signs, Dr. Harley Dingman-Batson; Dennis Pourier, and David Temple, his sons; Wendy Hayes, a secretary; and other students at the college, David Hellyer, Lambert Pitney, Bryan Ward, Peggy Rhodes, Penny Rhodes, Shellie Bowland, and Dianna Sumpter. Seniors Is That You, Mom? Efficiency Same To You This Is School??? Oh, You Guys! Really Working Hard! Seniors Go Back in Time One bright sunny day in modern Massachusetts, Mr. Unruh and Mr. Grimes decided they would invent something. They weren’t sure exactly what but just started building. When they were finished, they decided to try this machine out. As it turned out, this machine was a time machine. They had hoped to go forward in time, but instead went backwards, 200 years. After much time has passed in front of their eyes, they ended up in what appeared to be a sheep field. They weren’t sure where they were or at what time period they were in but decided to walk to a nearby farm house to find out. They knocked on the door, and a person that looked very much like Jim Kagie answered. He looked them up and down and told them they looked vaguely familar, like someone in his younger days. They asked him where they were, and he told them they were in Salem, Massachusetts, in 1776. He invited them in and while they were talking, the subject of his old class mates came up. Mr. Grimes and Mr. Unruh were very interested and found out that they were all members of the class of 1976 also. Mr. Grimes and Mr. Unruh decided to move on to see if they could visit some of the class members. Just as they were leaving, they met Jim’s three wives Eve, Valorie, and Della. They bade them good bye and wished them good luck on the world’s biggest sheep ranch. They rented some horses from the Painted Shetland Pony Farm owned and operated by Lonnie Morton. Lonnie has a booming business since people are only 5'1 tall. As they were riding down the road, Mr. Grimes and Mr. Unruh came upon Joe Railsback and Jim Bennett rustling 100 herd of cattle from Camilletti Cattle Association. They found out that Jim and Joe rustle 1000 head a day. As they enter town, they pass by the Henderson Pony Express and Stage Coach Line. Bill is helping John Doolin and Donnie Mann load the safe onto the stagecoach, which is driven by Darla Bowdish, who is the first ’’Women’s Liber” of that time. As they Progress into town, they decided to stop in at the local Red Barn Salon owned by Judi Zehner. As they sit down, two girls come over with their drinks. These girls happen to be Cindy Scott and Ruby Monti- eth. While they are there, they find out that they are having a trial that day. They are trying Linda Rhodes because she owns a black cat and is thought to be a witch. They decide this might be an exciting event and decide to go. Waiting for the judge to enter, they notice that Richard Mulkey is the prosecuting lawyer and the jury is made up of two well-known people. Lonnie Fread, and Pat Smith, and other townspeople. They all rise for the judge, who happens to be none other than Steve Bell, who doesn’t wear a white wig, because it messes up his hair too much. The trial got too boring so Mr. Unruh and Mr. Grimes decide to move along. As they step out into the street, they notice that the army is marching down the street. They get the general’s attention and find out that he is Rick Bowdish. Rick yells at Mr. Grimes for blocking the street and interrupting his march. But he is soon calmed by the sight of his beautiful wife, Georgiann Sanborn. She tells Rick that he isn’t supposed to get mad because the doctor ordered him to be calm. He then apologizes to Mr. Unruhn and Mr. Grimes and asks them what they want. They were chatting when one of the men in blue asked if they could go on because they had to go o a war. Mr. Unruh thought he recognized the voice and went to check. Yes, it was none other than Neil Twite, who was always complaining about everything from the color of his uni- form to the horse he was riding. The army then went on. They noticed a dress shop with a ’’Help Wanted” in the window and decided to investigate what kind of help was wanted. They stepped inside and found Lorraine Johnson at the counter. She was very talkative and suggested a light blue cotton dress would look very nice on Mr. Grimes or perhaps a purple one would be better. Mr. Unruh and Mr. Grimes decided they knew what kind of help Lorraine really needed and decided to leave. As they were walking down the street, they noticed that the local smithy was Richard Smith, who was quite respected in the town because he had become quite good at tackling people. This he had learned from his early career of football. Mr. Unruh became quite thirsty for some good wine, so they went into the wine store which was in joint ownership by Carolyn Williams. Bill Hays, Suzie Bams and Kraig Copeland. They opened up the store when Suzie turned old enough so she could buy the hard stuff. Mr. Grimes dragged Mr. Unruh away from the store and saw that there was quite a commotion going on at Independ- ence Hall. They went over and saw that the Declaration of Indepencence was being signed. They also noticed that Tom Hancock was selling insurance policies on the side. Kevin Deatherage and Kimble Frentress and Randy Booco were trying to sell their 4-H beefalo so they could have some money to invest in a new breed of cattle on which they were working. Mr. Unruh and Mr. Grimes decided they would let the men go on with their political busi- ness. They were walking down the street and saw that Kathy Singleton owned a chest build- ing school. Her motto was ”If people don’t notice something new about you, punch them.” In case Kathy couldn't convince people to try her school, she had Debbie (Smith) Rickman as her body guard. There was quite a commotion on the street and Mr. Grimes and Mr. Unruh went out to see what was happening. They saw that Tom Jacobs and Terry Nay’s yel- low carriage had lost one of its wheels. This had made Tom quite mad so he asked Mr. Grimes if he would like to buy it for a cheap price. But Daniel Gregory came running out and fixed the wheel faster than a whip. He was known as Fast Dan the Wheel Man. Mr. Unruh and Mr. Grimes saw that everything was becoming dim and that they were going forward in time again. When they got back, they were standing in front of their machine which self destructed in five seconds. This junior class has many talented members. They are involved in sports, in speech and in music. The junior-senior prom was fun to put on and an enjoyable evening for all. The junior class play, a comedy, was well received by the audi- ence. They set the school policies which the administration and staff carry out. These men receive no remuneration for their sevices. Their time and talents are spent trying to make Hyden Schools serve the needs of the children of this community. Countless men and women of our commu- nity have served as school board members in the past. Some are still in our commu- nity. One member of this board is a Hayden graduate, Duane Hockett. It is possible that some of our stu- dents of today will be future board members. Citizens such as these are to be commended for the many hours spent and energy given to make Hayden Schools the fine schools they are.
