SCHOLARSHIP SOCIETY The Scholarship Society is an honorary group of students with high scholastic standings. The club is active in promot- ing greater interest in academic matters. Each semester a trip is taken to a local college or university to familiarize the members with institutions of higher learning. Sparked by the fine quarter-backing of Joe Contestabile and supported by strong offensive and defensive lines and a capable backfield, the Cougars ended a spectacular season. Contestabile broke the national record for touchdown passing, by completing 32 passes which broke the existing record of 27 passes with the help of ends Gerald Schweitzer and Phil Murphy. Carmel Pepperdine The baseball teams showed great promise in the spring by exhibiting great strength in the pre-league games. Leuzinger, Torrance, Mt. Carmel and the iunior varsity of Pepperdine College were defeated. During Easter vacation the ball club defeated Puente, Fillmore, Corona and Pacific to capture the 5th Annual Puente Tournament.
