They were: Vincent Aaker, Frank Adomaitis, Don- na Bader, Joan Beaulieu, Tommy Byers, Henry Gluza, Shirley Hvass, Harold Johnson, Theresa Kraimer, Burton Leikvoll, Lois McLella.n, Irene Plaza, Nancy Poore, Annette Potter, Fred Purdum, Russell Shanahan, Carl Sokolowski, Jennie Sokolowski, Mary Swentonowski, Ray Winter, Roy Winter, Mary Lou Wishowski, and Phyllis Zastrow. During the year, three of our classmates left us: Irene Plaza, Fred Purdum, and Jennie Sokolowski. The class offices were held as follows: President ................,...........,......... Annette Potter Vice President .,.... ..,... M ary Lou Wishowski Secretary ............ ,................. P hyllis Zastrow Treasurer ...............................,.,.... Vincent Aaker The main event of the year was the initiation by the Sophomores which we all took as good sports, and in return gave them a party. A tofboggan party was held north of Kennan. Our I-irst year ended with a picnic at Somo Lake. After a vacation of three months, we returned . . . this time as Sopho- mores. We immediately took the opportunity of getting revenge on the Freshmen. That we did, and they didn't look the same jolly Freshmen when it was finished. Our enrollment for this year was as follows: Vincent Aaker, Frank Adomaitis, Donna Bader, Tommy Byers, Henry Gluza, Shirley Hvass, Harold Johnson, Theresa Kraimer, Burton Leikvoll, Lois McLellan, Nancy Poore, Annette Potter, Russell Shanahan, Mary Swentonowski, Ray Winter, Roy Winter, Mary Lou Wishowski, and Phyllis Zastrow. Shortly after school began, Mary Swentonowski left us, but we were joined by Joyce Mandy. The class oiifices were held as follows: President .,..........................,..... Russell Shanahan Vice President ..... ....... M ary Lou Wishowski Secretary ,.,.,.... . .......... Theresa Kraimer Treasurer .............,............,............. Nancy Poore The main event of the year was the initiation of the Freshmen. Time passed and then we came back as Juniors. We were no longer considered lower classmen. Some of our classmates left us. They were: Frank Adomaitis, Henry Gluza, and Theresa Kraimer. This left our happy lot at sixteen The class offices were held as follows: President .,........,....,............... ....... Vincent Aaker Treasurer ..,,,.,.,...,,,.,,,..,,,.,,,,,,.,.., Shirley Hvass There were many activities involving the Seniors during the year. We presented our class play, entitled He Couldn't Marry Five on March 22. On April 14, we gave our Pre-prom dance with music furnished by Howard Sturtz and His Orchestra. The gym was decorated to the theme of Deep Purple. The main event of the year was, of course, our graduation. Our class colors were orchid and white and our flower was the Talisman Rose. Our motto was Not At The Top, But Climbing. Prophecy of 1950 For 1960 Once upon a time, many, many years ago, there lived, in faraway land, a very wise old ugly witch. So wise was she that she could foretell the fu- ture of every person in the world. She lived in an old, tumble down hut, be- neath a large cliff. A short distance from this cliff was a magic caldron around which hung a string of golden bells. Every evening just as the sun went down the water would start to boil, and she would hear these bells, ringing. Then she would hasten to the kettle, to see the future of' many people, in the steam. After a time this old witch died, the magic kettle was not used so often and then only to satisfy some one's curiosity. But as it nears our graduation time, we take the old witch's place, drag the kettle from it's hiding place, set it aboiling and read the future of our graduates in the steam. 1 Annette Potter - - - Disappointed because Russell jilted her, she is now Phyllis Zastrow - Boots Wishowski Nanciellen Poore Ray Winter - - Roy Winter - - Burton Leikvoll - Russell Shanahan Vincy Aaker ----- Shirley Hvass - - Troop Leader of the Boy Scouts. Iunior Class History In 1947, twenty-one Hawkins grade school graduates started their way on a new and different life. They were eager to become high school students, but did not quite know what was in store for them in the form of initiation. Our Freshman class included: from Hawkins, Donabelle Moss, Lois Zastrow, Marlene Zastrow, Mickey Haugsby, Roger Hammer, jack Roy, Frank Sisko, Nelmar Viken, Buster Pickard, Duane Rose, Bill Nelson, Ray Lazar, Buster Baker, Alice Sokolowski, Irene Plaza, Raymond Cabak, johnny Cabak, Andy Dempsey, and Donald Plazag from Kennan, Marlitt Purdum and George Kokstis. Soon after school began Alice Sokolowski dropped out. Buster Baker remained a little longer before moving to Eau Claire. Our initiation produced many funny characters. Among them were Mickey Haugs-by dressed as a little girl, Duane Rose in diapers, Roger Hammer as a bathing beauty, and Andy Dempsey as a pirate. A few weeks later we honored the Sophomores with a return party! at which we played games and served a delicious lunch. Freshman class officers were: President ................... .... M ickey Haugsby Vice President ....... ............. J ack Roy Secretary ............ .... M arlene Zastrow Treasurer .................................... Roger Hammer ' Entering high school for our second year, we felt much better about the initiation of the Freshmen. This year we would be on the giving end instead of receiving it. Our '48 Sophomores included: from Hawkins, Donabelle Moss, Lois Zastrow, Marlene Zastrow, Irene Plaza, Donald Plaza, Raymond Cabak, johnny Cabak, Rayrnond Lazar, Mickey Haugsby, Roger Hammer, Jack Roy, Bill Nelson, Nelmar Viken, Frank Sisko, Andy Dempsey, and Buster Pickard. Marlitte Purdum was our only classmate from Kennan. Our initiation of the Freshmen was the most important event of our school year. Humorous costumes were wom and various rules were given the Freshies to obey. The Freshman return party was high-lighted by a treasure hunt that involved the whole town. Soon after initiation Marlitt Purdum dropped out of school. Irene Plaza and Buster Pickard left us during the First semester. Before closing our Freshman class history, we wish to express our most sincere gratitude to the upper classes for their attitude of co-operation toward our class. Through living up to the principles laid down for us, we hope to return to our homes better fitted for citizenship in a free and democratic America. Initiation On the morning of September 14, eleven trembling but defiant Freshman were escorted by the Sophomores and Mr. Farrey on a tour of the town. The lipstick smeared faces and somewhat ridiculous costumes of the Freshies brought quite a few laughs and caught many an eye. Upon arriving again at their Alma Mater, they continued bowing and kneeling to the Sophomores as they were requested to do, for the rest of! the day. That evening the final steps of being initiated were taken in the grade school gym.. The Freshies were led into the gym blindfolded and barefoot, one-by- one. From a delightfully cool pan of water, onto flypaper and rice, to the. lunch table they went. There they were served dainty tidbits such as marsh- mallows soaked in vinegar, a ball of pepper with a trifle Qabout a teaspoon- fulj of peanut butter holding it together, a little chunk of dry bread literally dripping with horseradish, mustard, a little swallow of pure lemon juice, and to top it all off, a gay, sparkling earthworm cocktail. Then the Freshies decided Cwith a little persauasion from the Soph- omoresj to entertain the guests. So Bud Potter, with the utmost sincerity, held Dorothy Zahurones' hand and proposed to her. Next, janet Mandy and jerry Sokolowski entertained. They got down on their knees at one end of the gym floor, and proceeded Qin a most joyful mannerj to push thistles across the floor with their noses. Susan Banyai, Dorothy Dempsey, and Donna Cronk sang that famous, well-known, most-celebrated composition, Three Blind Mice. Then janet Mandy was informed that she was tired and had better get some rest, so jerry Sokolowski cuddled her in his arms, and rocked her to sleep. Dorothy Dempsey and Bud Potter received the prizes for being the best sports. To end it all, a lunch was served by the Sophomore lunch committee. fb 5 if xv Q25 6? j X f W QE W' ffl Q Trophy Case Another welcome addition to the appearance of the school is the new trophy case. We especially appreciate it because it was given in part in memory of Mickey Krings. The boys determined to bring home a fitting trophy and went on to win first place in the Flambeauland Con- ference. The grade school added their laurel ---- the trophy they won in the tomament at Tony. In the future, we hope this collection grows tre- mendously. n- - at al - -A--e -aaeqqiv we-My ...v ,.....,,.--- Score Board With twinkling red buttons our new scoreboard came to life on basketball nights to rack up winning scores for the Hawkeye team. Though it ar- rived late in the season, it was nonetheless W e l c o m e. The added attraction of this flashy visitor is that no longer does one have to risk a strained sacroiliac in order to discover the score. Next year we hope to keep the board busy flick- ing up those winning scores for the Hawkins cagers. x v Q FJ 'X BASEBALL First Row: fLeft to Righty Mickey Haugsby, Vincent Aaker, Roger Hammer, Frank Sisko, john Check, Russell Shanahan, Donald Plaza, Second Row: Bill Nelson, Nelmar Viken, Harold johnson, Richard Poore, Coach Hilliard. Nine lettermen and last year's B team returned plus a couple of freshmen. Returning letter- men included .Vincent Aaker, Elgin Krings, Russell Shanahan, Nelmar Viken, Roger Hammer, Bill Nelson, Mickey Haugsby, Frank Sisko, and Harry Johnson. After a few weeks of practice, the first ten were picked. They were: Mickey Haugsby, Bill Nelson, Andrew Dempsey, Frank Sisko, Harry johnson, Vincent Aaker, Elgin Krings, Russell Shanahan, Roger Hammer, and Nelmar Viken. The first five included Viken and Hammer at guards, Shanahan at center, and Krings and Aaker at forwards. Our team was well rounded out with every man a scorer and a feeder. The team averaged 5 feet 9 inches and the starting five average 5 feet 10 inches, Hammer being the tallest man at six feet and Haugsby being the shortest at five feet six. Our first game was held at Winter, November 15. We scored an over- whelming 62 to 29 triumph. Everyone saw action that night with all of the men getting into the scoring column except Nelson who was injured in the first half. Shanahan at center led the scoring with 17, Hammer collected 14, and Krings rang the bell for 10. The first home game was held November 28. We engaged the Draper five and came out victorious 51 to 33. Hammer and Shanahan led the attack with 11 points each. We traveled to Weyerhauser December 2 and played our first conference game. Weyerhauser fell under our attack 37 to 26. Vicken was high with 11 points. He was followed by Aaker and Shanahan with 9 each. We held Gilman to three field goals when we traveled there and downed! their team 45 to 15. Shanahan set the pace with 16, followed by Aaker with 12. December 8 found us at home again, playing Glen Flora. This win was by a 56 to 33 count. In one of the best games the Hawkeyes played, Shanahan was high with 17, closely followed by Hammer with 16. Winter came here December 10 for their return game. Again we conquer- ed Winter, with Shanahan durnping in 24 points and Aaker 9. A 24 pointf margin separated the two teams at the end of the game, the score being 55 to 31. Hawkins made it seven in a row when they dumped Hannibal 56 to 22 on the court at Jump River. Shanahan led the attack with 20 points, followed by Krings and Hammer with 12 each. December 20, we traveled to Tripoli and were dropped from the ranks of the undefeated 41 to 37. With Viken out of action and the breaks against us, we couldn't match the classy Tripoli five. Shanahan led the fallen Hawk- eyes with 23 points followed by Johnson with 8. Tony came to Hawkins undefeated in conference play, as were the Hawk- eyes. Hawkins came through with a hard earned victory 43 to 33. Shanahan and Hammer led the attack with 15 and 10 points respectfully. This gave Hawkins undisputed first place in the Flarnbeauland conference. Gilman came to Hawkins on january 10, to fall before Hawkins 60 to 31. It took Hawkins quite a while to get going and as a result were behind 12 to 6 at the end of the first quarter. Shanahan had 16 points, followed by Hammer and Aaker with 13 and 12 respectively. .january 12, we traveled to Holcombe and trounced them 56 to 31. With Viken still out of action, Sisko played and stood out as he dumped in 18 points. Hammer followed closely with 16. Weyerhauser traveled to Hawkins january 19 and tasted defeat 47 to 16. They played a stalling game, but Hawkins finally got rolling with Shana- han and Sisko leading the attack with 16 and 13 points respectively. january 25, Holcombe came here only to go down to defeat 52 to 36. Hawkins took an early lead and never was headed. Shanahan set the pace with 25 points. Aaker followed with 10. We traveled to Glen Flora, january 27 and came home with a 43 to 25 victory. But it was only after a close scrape and only by holding Glen Flora without a point in the last quarter that we were assured of victory. Sisko and Hammer led with 12 points each. We hit the road again, traveling to Draper and defeating them 33 to 23. Behind at halftime by 3 points, the Hawkeyes settled down to business and played lb-all in the second half, coming throughhwith a hard earned victory. Aaker was high with 10 points, Shanahan next with 9, and Sisko with 7. February 3, Hannibal came here and fell by the wayside 70 to 13. Hawkins started fast and furious, taking a 25 to 4 lead at the quarter. Fed by all nine men, Shanahan set a new conference scoring record by dropping 47 points through the hoop. This was also a state record for the year. Tripoli came here February 7 and the Hawkeyes tasted sweet revenge by defeating them 44 to 40. The scoring was very well divided, Shanahan get- ting 12, Aaker 10, Hammer 9, Sisko 8, Viken 4, and Krings 1. We traveled to Tony February 9 and returned with another one under our belt. Final score, 'Hawkins 50, Tony 32. Sisko and Shanahan paced the winners with 16 and 14 points respectively. We wound up the season with a 49 to 30 victory over the Bruce boys. Hammer led with 12 points, Shanahan followed with ll, Krings got 9, Aaker 8, Sisko 7, and Viken 2. This finished our regular season with 18 wins and 1 loss. All told it was a very successful basketball season. The Hawkeyes were champions of the Flambeauland conference and set three new records in it: Most points in one season .................... ...................-.... 5 10 Most individual points in one game Cshallahanl ....-....... 47 Most individual points in one season CShanahanj ..,..... 177 Flambeauland Play-Off Hawkins, while defeating Tony twice during the regular season just beat Tony and that was all. Tony took an early lead and was ahead until the official time out. Hawkins stalled the last 255 minutes. The final score was 38 to 37. Shanahan paced the Hawkeyes with 19 points, followed by Aaker with 8. Phillips Tournament February 23, we traveled to Phillips and met Tripoli. Behind at half-tirne, the Hawkeyes came through to outscore the Tripoli five 30 to 9 in the second half. When the final whistle blew, Hawkins was ahead 45 to 25. Shanahan was high with 17 points, Hammer next with 8. We traveled to Phillips for our second game of the tournament and were defeated by Rib Lake. It was all tied up at the first quarter 15 all. The final score was 39 to 36 in favor of Rib Lake, who went on to win the tournament. Shanahan led with 14, Aaker followed with 7. Hammer and Shanahan were placed on the all-toumament team. Basketball Tecim Goes To State Tournament Due to the generosity of the people of Hawkins, the basketball team got a 3-day trip to Madison as a very fine finish to an excellant basketball season. The team saw some very fine games and learned many things which will help to improve their style of ball. The trip was very enjoyable as well as educational. They stayed at very fine rooms and enjoyed them-f selves very much even if they did have some trouble finding their way around the city. Hawkeyes l95O Basketball Record Name P G FG FAT FTM PCT. Being on the short end of a 26 to 30 score, we received' the second place trophy. We are quite proud of our season and wish to thank Mr. Hilliard for his excellent coaching and everyone else for their fine support. The cheer- leaders also deserve much credit for their grand performances at the games. Opponents Winter . .. Draper . .... . Weyerhauser Gilman . .... . Glen Flora . Winter . .... . Hannibal . .
