The '58-'59 hoop season was a tough one for the Hillies, a green squad competing in a league of teams who had starters with a year's experience in varsity competition. In the first part of the season, the team was hampered by injuries and illness. However, as the season progressed and the team improved, it became evident that even with- out the services of injured co-captain Tony Kazukonis, who was greatly missed because of his shooting ability and ball handling, had these boys had the advantage of another year of experience, they would have commanded a lot of attention in the Essex County League. The Haverhill club made its first appearance at the second annual Andover High School Alumni Jamboree, on the new Andover court, where it defeated Woodbury High of Salem, New Hampshire in a close contest. The final score, after two eight minute periods, was 22-21. In this game, John Palmieri, a transfer student from Waterville, Maine, showed great promise, scoring eight points with four shots from the floor. A week later, the Hillies ap- peared at the annual Gloucester Jamboree where they were defeated by Lynn English in thirty minutes of run- ning time. At the Jamboree, Coach White got a look at the powerful squad which his team was scheduled to meet five days later at Haverhill. Despite Coach White's efforts to curb the visitors' at- tack, English succeeded in copping their first victory in the opener at Haverhill, This win started them on the road to a very successful season which saw them capture the league crown for the second successive year, and se- cure a Tech Tournament trial berth. The Hillies then suf- fered a series of three defeats by Lynn Classical-in a game lost in the last two minutes of play-Gloucester, and Beverly. However, on January 7, the Hillies made a great comeback, defeating Saugus in a completely one-sided con- test. Coach White was able to substitute freely in this game, and used a two platoon system which enabled him to capitalize on the shooting ability of Jim Carifio and forwards Joe LaMore and Dave Court, while alternating fast guards Bobby Schena, Vaughn Paddock, Ron D'Ar- cangelo, and John Palmieri.
