Earle H. MacLeod, our principal, is one man who will not easily be forgotten--neither by the class of '59 nor by the previous twenty-two graduating classes. The theme chosen for our 1959 classbook of- fers an apt description of our principal, for Mr. MacLeod is a man who, for the past twenty-three years, has been going places and doing things for the good of Haverhill High School. Never satisfied with anything less than the best, Mr. MacLeod planned academic pro- grams to meet our varied needs and to give us the best possible preparation for college, for careers, for worthwhile living as members of our community. Still he found time to partici- pate in our many extra-curricular activities. It was not at all unusual for us to arrive at a football, a baseball, or a basketball game and find Mr. MacLeod there before us, cheering enthusiastically for our team, demonstrating his interest in us. His appearances at special assemblies, his unexpected visits into the class- rooms, as well as cheery hellos to all who passed him in the corridors, will always stand out in our memories as part of our enjoyable stay at Haverhill High School. Like a castle on a faraway Scottish hill, the sand-colored stones of H. H. S. formed for twenty-three years the manor house of the Earle tofu MacLeod. From this fortress of knowledge, he sent forth troops of young men and women to battle ignorance and indolence. With pride in having been his last legion, the Class of 1959 affectionately dedicates to him this classbook. Receiving Bon Voyage wishes from the fac- ulty. We fill our days with activities that include mixing up strange, evil-smelling concoctions in chemistry, strug- gling with complicated physics problems, transporting ourselves to Paris, Rome, Ma- drid, or Berlin in our foreign language classes, and exploring the world of imagin- ary numbers, parabolas, and hyperbolas in math classes. In addition, we try to recon- struct America's past in United States His- tory classes, and we explore areas of art, science and history for our long themes, the highlight of our Senior English classes. Such exams as the Mathematics Association of America tests, Follege Board Aptitude and Achievement tests, and National Merit Schol- arship Tests prepare us for college. Furthermore, we learn the art of cooking for well-bal- anced meals ,and often plan menus for such functions as the National Honor Society Teas and faculty luncheons. Our spring fashion show held in the audi- torium highlights our activities for the year. Eighth-grade girls and their teachers come from all over the city to see us model the clothes designed and made by us. For each meeting the girls in- vite a different speaker who tells about procedures at various hospitals and ex- plains diiferent phases of nursing. Besides the regular meetings, the future nurses take three or four trips to hospitals each year, to see how the hospitals are run, and to learn the various aspects of nursing. Visiting hospitals and lis- tening to speakers have truly helped some girls to make the final decisions on their careers. Seated: N. Tatro, T. Johnson, M. Lawson, M. Sztucinski, J. Wright. The band is hard at work under the direction of Mr. Sarkis Kurk- jian preparing a program for the annual Northeastern Massachusetts Music Festi- val in Belmont, as well as a program for a special exchange concert with the Ames- bury High School Band in March. At the Amesbury concert, in addition to the per- formance of the full band, a smaller con- cert band, made up of members of the regular band, will also play special con- cert and dance band arrangements, which promises to have a popular appeal. By the end of the year the band will proudly display snappy new brown and gold uni- forms, obtained through the efforts of band members and their parents. Haverhill High's other instrumental The money for this Magnavox stereophonic high fidelity record player was raised by the Chora- leens from such projects as rum- mage sales, whist parties, cake sales, and a Christmas Bazaar. The record player will help the Choraleens to enjoy good music as well as help them to perfect their own singing. Shown around the record player are Mrs. Sztucinski, Choraleen motherg Linda Perleyg Mary Ann Sztu- cinski, Rose Marie Fortuna, and Patricia Foisy. A group, the orchestra, also under the direc- tion of Mr. Kurkjian, continues faithfully to supply music for all school assemblies, as well as for special performances at the Trade School's annual Christmas program and its graduation exercises. The school vocal groups-the Chora- leens, the Festival Chorus, and the new- ly-formed Boys' glee club-perform un- der the able direction of Mrs. Selma Perkins. Highlights of their musical cal- endar include such events as participation in the Northeastern Massachusetts Music Festival at Belmont, and a special per- formance singing with the Commonwealth Skating Club in the Boston Arena in March. Despite penalties totaling over 100 yards, our highly spirited team downed the Witch City eleven, 20-7. Both teams deserve credit for a well played game. A stubborn Medford club almost upset Haverhill's well conditioned team, when the. Hillies went there for the game of November 8. Although faced with defeat, our boys pulled this one out of the fire by scoring twice in the final quarter to defeat the Mus- tangs, 24-14. The game of the year was played on Sun- day, November 16. Over 20,000 payees and wall jumpers came to see the game which de- cided the Class A championship between the Hillies and the Lancers from Lawrence. The game was truly one of championship teams. Although our boys played their hearts out, the better team won 30-12. The final game for the LaMore and White co-captained squad came on Thanksgiving Day when they traveled to Manchester. There, a thoroughly chilled crowd saw Haverhill completely outplay the Granite State champs. The final score was 22-6. This Thanksgiving Day game ended the season for the Hillies on a successful note. Their fine record of seven wins, one loss, and one tie, disproved the predictions of armchair quarterbacks. Haverhill Harriers taking the lead against Reading. Because of strong competition and a slow start, the 1958 Haverhill High Harriers, under the leadership of Coach Charlie White and Co-cap- tains Bob Watt and Dick Thurston, could come up with only a 1 to 5 record. However, the team improved with time, as they put on a late season spurt in the last three meets. The Hillies lost a close meet to Read- ing, trounced Lawrence High for their only victory, and closed the season losing a toughie to Revere under poor conditions. In addition to their reg- ular schedule of meets, Haverhill High entered in two post season meets, the Essex County meet and the Middlesex County meet. Despite steady rain and sloppy conditions, the boys from the castle finished fourth in the Essex County meet. Some of the runners who deserve mention are George O'Neil, Ron Grant, Bob Grant, John Campbell, and Bob Faraci. Although the 1958 cross-countrymen didn't have a brilliant record, the future certainly looks bright. A glance at the results of the meets shows that the majority of Haverhill's finishers were underclassmen. All the outstanding runners of 1958 with the exception of Bob Grant, will be returning in 1959. This group will form a nucleus of a strong veteran team led by Captain John Soupy Campbell. The biggest thrill for any G. A. L. member is the Awards Day on which she receives her H Sweater, the major G. A. L. award, which symbolizes four years of participation in girls' sports. This year marks the thirtieth anniversary of the League which was first started in 1928 to give girls an oppor- tunity to participate in various after school sports, such as basketball, softball, badminton, bowling, and square dancing. For their participation in this program, the girls win points which make them eligible for such awards as shields, numerals, or minor H's, and finally the sweater. A highlight of the program each year is the selection of the Brown and Gold teams. Every member who is chosen for this team treasures always her Brown and Gold letter. The '58-'59 hoop season was a tough one for the Hillies, a green squad competing in a league of teams who had starters with a year's experience in varsity competition. In the first part of the season, the team was hampered by injuries and illness. However, as the season progressed and the team improved, it became evident that even with- out the services of injured co-captain Tony Kazukonis, who was greatly missed because of his shooting ability and ball handling, had these boys had the advantage of another year of experience, they would have commanded a lot of attention in the Essex County League. The Haverhill club made its first appearance at the second annual Andover High School Alumni Jamboree, on the new Andover court, where it defeated Woodbury High of Salem, New Hampshire in a close contest. The final score, after two eight minute periods, was 22-21. In this game, John Palmieri, a transfer student from Waterville, Maine, showed great promise, scoring eight points with four shots from the floor. A week later, the Hillies ap- peared at the annual Gloucester Jamboree where they were defeated by Lynn English in thirty minutes of run- ning time. At the Jamboree, Coach White got a look at the powerful squad which his team was scheduled to meet five days later at Haverhill. Despite Coach White's efforts to curb the visitors' at- tack, English succeeded in copping their first victory in the opener at Haverhill, This win started them on the road to a very successful season which saw them capture the league crown for the second successive year, and se- cure a Tech Tournament trial berth. The Hillies then suf- fered a series of three defeats by Lynn Classical-in a game lost in the last two minutes of play-Gloucester, and Beverly. However, on January 7, the Hillies made a great comeback, defeating Saugus in a completely one-sided con- test. Coach White was able to substitute freely in this game, and used a two platoon system which enabled him to capitalize on the shooting ability of Jim Carifio and forwards Joe LaMore and Dave Court, while alternating fast guards Bobby Schena, Vaughn Paddock, Ron D'Ar- cangelo, and John Palmieri. aunty Cfircuit .., . i Look man, I'm comin' through! Vaughn drives for two vs. Saugus. In a visit to Salem on January 113, the Hillies resumed league play after dropping one to Manchester Central of New Hampshire. It looked for a while as though Salem was not as strong as had been predicted, and with Jon Woodman grabbing the ball off the boards, it seemed as though the game would go down to the wire, but the Hil- lies could not match the shooting of the Witches in the second half, and this game went into the books in the right Column, On Friday of the same week, the Peabody Tanners came into town, As was expected, the game was a close one with Haverhill ending up on top. On January 20, the llillies again met the uncontainable English five as the league went into the second half of competition. Throughout the season, the Hillies improved steadily, and the line perforinance of high scorer Jim Carifio, board- men Jtlll Woodnian, Leon L'zdavenis, and Dave Court and back court men Dick Maguire, Vaughn Paddock, and Bob- by Schena made possible the upsetting of Gloucester on January 28, and Salem on February 11, The Salem vic- tory inarked the first time the Haverhill club has beaten the Witches at Haverhill since 1951. 1 ,ig PQ' 1 I l X KX -txxxag 5-- xcyi ' X . Run, run, and keep run- ning was the order of the day from Coach Charlie White, and the squad responded quickly. The old form came back and spirits soared. The George Bejian led squad were out to cop the Essex County League crown which they had so narrowly missed the pre- vious year, but lady luck seemed to have other plans for the Haverhill High Track Squad. All looked well when Coach White's charges met Methuen in the lirst meet of the season. The squad was in great shape and spirits were high, factors accounting for the impressive score of Haverhill 57, Meth- uen 20. The future didn't look very rosy though when Haverhill met its next opponent -Salem. The Witches had many surprises for the Hillies and turned the tables, 66-20. A break in the regular schedule came when the cindermen took part in the Essex Coun- ty Meet. Clouds again began to form when the locals met their old enemy Lynn English. The Englishmen got the best of the Hillies 'and swamped them 64-31. Neighboring North Andover was not so neighborly when they encountered the Hillies. As a matter of fact, they were quite stubborn and the Hillies met defeat again by the score of 57 1X3- 19 3f4. Beverly soon followed suit with her southern friends by walking over Haverhill 64-22. Seeking win number two of the dis- appointing season Coach White restored the spirit of the squad and in a real traditional Haverhill - Lawrence thriller, Haverhill downed the Mill City sprinters 48-47. With an assist from lady luck, the record of the '59 season will be more impressive, for the Hillies tracken are out to revenge their losses of last year. Vic Legault shot putting against Beverly. It was Beverly who upset the apple- cart with a 6-0 win over the Hillies on May 27 on the three-hit pitching of Ralph Terry. Ending the season on May 29 with a 5-2 victory over Lawrence, the Hillies finished with an 8-7 record, one game behind Glouceste1', 9-6, and 25 games behind the league leading cham- pions, Lynn English 10-6. Vaughn Paddock, Ritchie Esposito, and Pete Bracci banged out the team's home runs and Buzzy Basile led in doubles and triples. Pete Bracci was a key factor in the Hillies' climb from seventh to third place. In the first half of the season, Bracci had a l-fi record, and he came back strong with four wins against no losses.
