'l'he past is safe: but these are perilous times, so uncertain and dangerous that many people - some of us perhaps- who have always heretofore taken the perpetuation of Democracy for granted. now for the first time seriously question the Future to know if our way of life, well symbolized by our free educational system, can withstand the storms that beat about it. 'lihat the fate of this school is indissolubly linked with that of llemocracy, we know. If the school is the guardian of democracy, so is democracy the guardian of a truly free educational system. lVe can have no illusions as to the character of our High School under a totalitarian government. The dictators who, in their own countries, have debased education to unworthy ends have repre- sented not themselves but an ldeal - a philosophy of life. It is not a Hitler who is to be fought but a concept of human relationship. It is not a man, no matter how great he may be, who will defeat that concept of life: it will be defeated by a philosophy of living far greater than any one man-The Democratic Ideal stirring the heart and steeling the sinews of millions of men yet free. Phrases from the immortal address of the Great lfmancipator stir our hearts - Now we . . . war . . . testing whether this nation . . . long endure. lledicate . . . Rather for us . . . dedicate ou-rselves . . .
