Flilllll' F00'I'llll UI IIERME BREAK IlEC0lllI A sensational year in track completed one of the most outstanding years in Haven High's history as the Wildcat cindermen copped six meets, scored one second place, and tied for second in another. With only five returning lettermen remaining from the '54' squad, chances of a successful season were very slim. After finishing a dismal second to Conway Springs in the Cheney invitational the Wildcats surprised everyone, includ- ing themselves by tieing for second with Conway Springs at Anthony. With enthusiasm at an all time high, the Cats couldn't be held down as they captured the Haven, K, U. , Beloit, Hutchinson Invitational, Mid-Kansas League, Hutchinson Regional and finished second to Gardner in the State meet, In winning these six meets, the local thinclads erased six school records. Dave Dutton, senior, broke three records, those being the broad jump, high jump, and the 880 yard run. The old record in the broad jump was 22'2 held by Dutton in 1954, the high jump was 5'9 1f2 set by Arnold Krenke in 1951. Dutton posted the new height at 6'. Dutton's other record came in the 880 yard run as he ran the distance in 2:01, bettering the old time of 2:05. 9 set by Marvin Valdois in 1953. The other two individual record breakers were Darrel Tucker and Larry Haines. Tucker heaved the shot put 47 feet to better the old mark of 45'2 set by Floyd Rathbone in 1940, Larry Haines voulted 12'1 3f4 to better his own mark of 11'6 earlier in the year. l-laven's speedy 880 yard relay team, composed of Dave Dutton, Larry Haines, Gene Heim, and Jim Hayes lowered the time of 1:34.4 to 1:32. 1. The old record was established in the 1944 State meet by Charles Dickerson, Sam Collins Wayne Morgan, and Lyle Koontz. Coach Hill will have eight returning lettermen next year to form the nucleus of the Wildcat thinclads. 5 4, x LEFT: Dave Dutton leaps into the air and comes through with another record breaking jump. WILIICAT ATHLETE lllllll I E I 'I'0 Il CL B Under the supervision and guidance of Coach E. V. CPeteJ Albright a lettermen's club was organ- ized for the first time in the history of Haven High School. When the charter was drawn up the H Club consisted of 15 members but as the various sports progressed the ranks swelled to a total of 19 members. While the club's main purpose was to promote interest in high school athletics the organi- zation found time to sponsor a dance which was enjoyed immensely by all those who attended. The style show was of particular interest. Since this was the first year for the H Club the organization was not too powerful in the school but with experience and Coach Albright's capable guidance the club should develop into one of the leading organizations in HHS, Club officers were: I. Hayes, presidentg Don Standley, vice- presidentg and Chuck Elvin., secretary-treasurer. Pictured below are members of the H club. KNEELING, LEFT TO RIGHT: C. Elvin, D. Standley, J.
