WILIHIAT RACK I' E VIABLE MGE REUUHII With two regulars returning from the championship Wildcat team of '53-'54, all probablities were pointing toward a very successful cage season for Haven High School. The Cats got off to a rather slow start loosing a total of three games by the middle of the season. In the season opener Haven journeyed to Halstead to meet the ever powerful Dragons. After a hotly contested battle, the Wildcats emerged victorious for their first of 25 wins. Following week the Cats championship chances were struck a severe blow, when Haven dropped a double over time contest, 64-62, to the Inman Teutons on the Inman hardwoods. Coach Hill's men got back into the win column the following night in an exhibition game, against Claflin at Mc- Pherson. Haven also downed Mr. Hope, Nickerson, Burrton, and Pretty Prairie, before loosing a heart breaker to Moundridge, 29-30. With moral and enthusiasm at an all time low, Haven barely downed the scrappy Buhler five, 55-51 V Next on the Haven schedule, was the annual Tournament of Champions at Dodge City, an event the Wildcat squad had been looking forward to all year. The Wildcats shook off their early season jinx, downing Class AA Dodge City and Class B Alma to earn a crack at the championship. In the title game the fighting Cats were downed by the Hays Indians, a powerful Class A team, in an over time 51-49. From that point on it was Haven all the way as Coach Hill's crew defeated Halstead, Nickerson, Inman, Burrton, Pretty Prairie, Moundridge, Sylvia and Buhler, After drawing a bye in first round play of the District Tourney, Haven trounced to assure the Wildcats a place in the Regional Tournament. In the finals of the District play, Haven emerged victorious in the lowest scoring game of the year for Haven, 12-'7 against Partridge . In Regional play Haven continued to play terrific basketball as the Cats downed Cunningham, Halstead, and Sedg- wick in the finals, no gain a berth in the State Tourney, in Emporia. This was the first Haven team to enter the State Tourney since 1941. At Emporia Haven defeated Glasco, and McLouth to fight their way into the State finals against the neighboring Inman Teutons. After a hitterly contested game, Haven defeated the tough Inman, five, 67-62. for the State Class B Championship of Kansas. The Wildcats ended the season with 25 wins and 3 loses, almost unbelievable record. PICTURED AT LEFT: Wild- cat varsity watching re- maining moments of hotly contested B team game.
