Haven 24, Halstead 0. WILHUAT HHIHHHHS HAVE SUUUESSFUL SHASHN With only two regular lettermen returning from the champion Wildcats of 53-54 Haven was expecting only a mediocre season on the gridiron. Much to the disappointment of all M.K. L. teams the local Cats developed very rapid- ly in the opening two weeks of practice. In the opening game against the rival Cheney Cardinals the Wildcats showed a smooth running offense in downing the visitors 26-0. On September 12 the Wildcats journeyed to Nickerson to meet the ever powerful Nickerson Panthers in the league opener for both schools. After 47 minutes of ver rugged football the Haven team struck pay dirt with 10 seconds remaining in tHe game for a 20-14 victory. Haven, seeming to grow more powerful with each ame, con- tinued to rol over M.K. L. foes, downing Pretty Prairie, 40-63 I-Halstead, 24-03 Burrton 20-6 before being routed by a rug ed Moundridge eleven, 48-13. The Cats, their spirit somewhat broien, lost their next encounter 27-12 to Buhler. Haven regained their form the next week when they slaughtered In- man 4l-0. The following week Haven traveled to Mt. Hope to meet the Pirates in their annual clash. Haven pushed across two touchdowns while holding Mt. Hope scoreless to win 13-0. This game marked the close of the high school careers for seven Seniors who composed the nucleus of the Wildcat eleven. They were backs: Dave Dutton, Jim Hayes and Phil Kinast. Lineman were: Gary Engweiler, Darrel Tucker, Jerry Carmichael and Charles Elvin. Other Seniors were Darrel Rawlings, Mel Schrock and Howard Lehner. A. B.
