ELGHANAYAN LYNCH TILNEY 320 kklazc-A SA oo! C obechca fiom CAPTAIN RUFUS KING The mark of a schoolmaster is his own enthusiasm for his work and his ability to create that enthusiasm in others. It is his chosen task to devote himself to encouraging boys to their best. both in the classroom and beyond its walls. They must learn that in all they do, the true reward for doing that which is worthwhile is in the art of doing it. To a man who understands this principle and who is eminently .successful in bringing his boys to its un- derstanding, the class of l9ol dedicates this book. An able teacher, and a loyal friend--This is Captain Rufus King. 6 K QL? lC'CLfl0ll JAMEs E, STONIIER We can have nothing hut admiration for a man who for thirty-eight years has generously devoted his talents to his students. On the playing fields, in the classroom and in his home, he works twenty-four hours of every day helping those of us who have need of his knowledge and experience in solving our problems-both from our text hoolzs and in our lives. At our impressionable age we seek the ideals upon which to pattern our lives. Sometimes we do not immediately recognize those ideals, as it is only through long and close asso- ciation that they are reflected in the strength of a persons character. We the class of 1961, dedicate this book to a man who has refreshed our minds with superior teaching and our souls with his warm philosophies of life. A competent coach, a patient instructor and a deeply interested and sympathetic mentor- This is James E. Stonier. 7 xjwleaclm cw fern MR. and MRS. R. ROBERT MARR X x Llf f . Although Hatch failed to win any games this year, the season had its bright moments. The Saint Sebastians game was a hard-fought closely-con- tested battle in which Hatch lost by a score of S to 18. After the game the coach of an undefeated Saint Sebastians team commended the Hatch eleven on their strong play. Even though the team was unsuc- cessful in competition, there was some real football talent on the field. This became evident when several players were placed on prep, county, and state' teams. These all-'star players were Tom Kavanagh, Mike Klein, Pete Biehl, Cruger Thomas, Jed Dolce, Barney Boardman, and Billy Rabb. Witli the help of some promising underclassmen, next year's team should enjoy a far more successful season. Cruger Thomas J 'll wvvv-4.,f , - V' it ' 48 rLj.,V7 V 1 . Upon returning from Christmas vacation the wrestlers were faced with a formidable schedule. For many, the opening match with St. Georges was the first time they had ever seen a wrestling match. Witli the exception of the co- captains, none of the team members had ever wrestled before. This ex- plains the record of eight losses and only a single win. Furthermore, all the teams we wrestled were strong and experiencedg La Salle was the winner of the New England Champi- onships as well as being state cham- pion. Tabor was runner-up for the state championship last year. Despite such strong opponents Hatch man- aged to win three individual matches in each meet. Bob Martin always managed to come up with a fast pin except at Priory where he fought an extremely skilled and experienced opponent. Peter Hawes and Esh Lun- ken usually came through with five points. In the last match, the tables were finally reversed. Hatch beat a team which was its equal in experience and depth. This was the best way we could have ended our otherwise dis- appointing season. The closing match augers well for next year's team, for only the co- captains, Peter Hawes and Bo-b Mar- tin, are seniors and with more ex- tremely competent coaching from Mr. Campana, the returning members will be a strong and seasoned group, and great things can be expected from Lunken, Rabb and Saunders- all fine wrestlers. . How- ever, this is not indicative of the teams performance on the floor. Many of the games were decided by a small margin. Typical of these games was the battle with Tabor Academy. Midway in the fourth period Tabor closed the gap and moved into a tie with a tiring Hatch team. Wfith six seconds remaining in the hnal period Pete Moran scored the two points which gave Hatch the game. lt then became evident that the team was capable of a good performance when the pres- sure was on. Another highlight of the season was the game with Rivers School. The Hatch team, paced by Mike Klein, smothered their opponents 70- 40. Klein broke the school scoring record for the most points scored in a game with 33. Hatch's captain, Tom Kavanagh was another standout in this game with his sensational re- bounding and play-making ability. The starting five for Hatch this year were: john Hale, Mike Klein. Tom Kavanagh, Pete Moran and Briggs Carroll. Other members of the team who saw a great deal of action were: Jed Dolce, Bill Lynch and Refi Berent. Coach john Young predicts a strong Hatch team for l962. . is i --.'.-, , a .,. W 5 zz: rf if I .N Sf 5 . . '. 4 'a Y fs. f l ij i.
