Senior Class - that's what this years seniors showed throughout the year, not only in their conduct, but in their sportsmanship, citizenship, and all-around friendship to every- one. Sure, there were some bad times and some times when living up to all those qualities wasn't very easy but on the whole this year was made better, not worse, by their con- tributions. Being a senior holds a lot of dif- ferent emotions for a lot of people. In trying to sum up their senior year in a few words the seniors said, power, Happy and sad, a lot of growing upf' Searcy, one big party, enjoyable, and memo- ries. All of them are appropriate but the memories are what we'll have forever, tucked away in a spe- cial spot in our hearts. -.W Julie McCready goes ape over Curt Clowe in the halls. By the looks on the faces of these girls, whatever the latest news is must be unbelievable. Seniors on the bridge plot their next skip day. if ff. 'X A Y rf ff av- Juniors Pla Leading and Supporting Roles The Co-Stars of the 1976-77 year were the juniors who were always ready to show their class spirit. On 50's Day they had the most people dressed in those roaring 50's styles. During Spirit Week juniors could be seen in their spirit-raising outfits. For instance one of the ju- nior boys won a pineapple for the most original costume on Islander Day. A couple of others won the best dressed on Teachers Appre- ciation Day. Still others participated in the H.H.S. sports programs. Not only did the guys get involved but the gals did their fair share, also. The gals were Tigerettes, Mat Maids and locker pals. Girls sports activities were also a concern of many girls. It was a relief to become a juniorg you were no longer a sophomore fresh from the crib but also you wer- en't an almighty senior ready to be abandoned out in the cold, cruel world. Time was theirs and they used it well. They took the initiative, no longer imitating the ways of their upperclassmen but instead chosing their own way. The next 13 pages are dedicated to that junior class of '77. I Living up to Mark Twain's philosophy on education, the motto of these juniors seems to be: I have never let my schooling interfere with my education. Dave Sypherd braveg the hallg without 3 pass. No, this is not a chorusline from some Las Vegas showroom, but only a group of those talented junior girls struttin' their stuff. igffw Chris Knoedler works diligently on her yearbook. Many an- swered an enthusiastic yes but some answered with a nervous uno . The sophomores got up to HHS and realized it wasn't so bad after all. lt's true their first battle cry was a failure but the Class of '79 quickly caught on to the Tigerland spirit as they became a part of Hastings High. At first Tiger activities seemed strange, but with Homecoming, Spirit Week, Twirp Week and many athletic activities, sophomores soon proved to the upperclassmen that they would be terrific Tigers also. The sophomores eagerly took part in such organizations as Student Council, Flamingos, Band, athlet- ics, music and many more. Getting involved in these activities meant lots of hard work, a chance to earn a letter, and especially the chance to meet the seniors and juniors. One sophomore said, s'We sopho- mores played our part well, but I must admit that the seniors are the stars of it all, the juniors are the co- stars, and we sophomores are just happy to be in the picture. Their first performance was a combined half-time show with the Kearney High Band. They also went to Grand Island for the Harvest of Harmony parade and field competi- tion, followed by the Hastings Col- lege Melody Round-up, and the State Marching Festival in Lincoln. For the first year, eight Flag Girls were added to the band. The girls marched in parades and were fea- tured in the Hastings-Kearney half- time show. The Pep Band performed at all home boys basketball games, and played at three out-of-town games. They also provided spirit for a girls basketball game, girls volleyball, and a wrestling meet. The Stage Band, and newly formed Lab Band performed, at the Hastings College Jazz Festival, and at the Spring Concert. The Concert Band played at three concerts, and took part in the dis- trict music contest. A highlight for the year was going to Kansas City Worlds of Fun, where they performed and also lis- tened to the bands. The students worked hard at various projects to raise money for their trip. A select 12 students were in the NMEA Band and Orchestra, at Omaha Westside. At the district music contest ll students played solos, and five stu- dents took part in the Hastings Hon- or Band. The Hastings High Band received much support from the parents, school board, administration, and will be wearing new uniforms next year. Orchestra ndertakes Difficult New Music A Concert for All Seasons could have been the theme of the 1976-1977 orchestra. The orchestra, under the guidance of second-year director Mr. Hugh, performed in the Fall Concert, the Winter Con- cert, and the Spring Concert. The orchestra presented their Fall Concert in late October, performing six pieces including Carmen Suite No. 1 by Bizet, Ballet from Petite Suite written by Debussy and Hay- Up Hoe-Down by Grundman. The group also played a few se- lections preceding the choral groups at the Christmas Concert. The Spring Concert was present- ed by the orchestra the last week of April. The concert was a joint pro-- duction of the orchestra and band. Some arrangements were performed featuring string orchestra. Senior Mary Fishel played a violin solo. The orchestra also played at Bac- calaureate in May. Ten Hastings High students were included in the Nebraska Music Educators Association clinic orches- tra. The students were chosen through individual tryout. The State Music Clinic was held in November at Omaha Westside. Seniors repre- senting Hastings were: Terri de- Backer, Mary Fishel, Miriam Eckb- lade, Mike Johnson, and Jill Goehr- ing. Juniors Deb Mortensen, Ann Throckmorton, Sherm Johnson and one sophomore Sue Veburg made the trip to Omaha. The District Music Contest was held at Hastings College in April. Musicians spent their own time to prepare solos or small ensemble numbers for the contest. The presen- tations were judged by profession- als. The orchestra rehearsed twice a week for eighty minutes. Sectionals for individual instruments were re- quired for one mod a week. Mr. Hough reflects on the year, We worked hard on the music and I feel the students learned a lot about many different styles of mu- sic. Mr. Hough and LeAnn Ore iron out some rough spots in an arrangement. Mary Fishel works on her music intently, showing the dedication which has helped her become a highly accomplished violinist. , , t .mm ,.1w.t.,ww ,, , . , ,, ,.,,,,4, V . 5 ,ix J V , V ' Q' f f H , gig, N my is Senior instrumentalists are often instrumental in Forming strange ensem- bles in the orchestra as Tom Bruna and Scott Carstens can attest to. These girls were filmed hard at work spiking, setting, and volleying under the direction of Coach Betty Walters. Supporting actors for the varsity team were Shelly Spilinek, Annette Jasch, Mary Houtz, Suzanne Hartmen, and Andrea McCoy. Special guest appearances were made by several juniors and sophomores on the ju- nior varsity consisting of Kathy Smith, Christy Moorhead, Cindy McDaniel, and Lori Weber. Sopho- mores who had an acting role in this year's team were Jan Donahue,Jill Christensen, Sally Sneller, Laura DeJonge, Any Foote, Nancy Dimler, Becky Minnick, Connie Petzoldt, Renee Schwab, and Kathy Watson. These girls were assisted by Coach Kay Payne. The girls started out their season by losing the first two games and followed the losses up with a re- sounding win over the 1975 state champions from Lincoln High. This box office winner seemed to put the Tiger netters into good spirits for they defeated Fremont, Lincoln S. E., G. I. Northwest, and G. I. In the district playoffs, under the direction of both coaches, the varsi- ty girls produced a win in the game against Kearney, but failed to make such a performance against the eventual state champs from Scotts- bluff. The 1976 girls' volleyball team failed to make an appearance at this year's state tournament, but despite that fact, both coaches and the play- ers felt satisfied with the all around team effort. They ended up the sea- son with a record of 6-6. Miss Wal- ters and the returning players are hopeful for an experienced team and a strong season next year. The Columbus game from the ref's view. Girl's Track Team Ends Season uch mprovedg Send Two to State The 1977 girls track season was filled with improvement and excite- ment. Mile standout Sally Sneller thrilled fans by breaking the school record four times and establishing six meet records. She placed third in the Nebraska Class A mile. Captain Lori Coulter demonstrat- ed leadership and strength while twice breaking her school record and placing in most meets. Lori nabbed eighth place in the Nebras- ka Class A shotput and discus. A The mile relay team of Mary Houtz, Lori Coulter, Kathy Smith, and Sally Sneller ranked high in al- most every meet. A meritorious per- formance was also turned in by the 440 relay team of Leslie Bigley, Vicki Sinner, Pam Jones and Missy McDaniel when they captured sixth place in the district meet. Overall, Coaches Randy Lawson and Ann Henry were quite pleased with the way the season finished. They are counting on several return- ing tracksters for the 1978 season. 1977 Girls track team: J. Tiger Footballers Post Disappointing Year The grid season in 76 was a prom- ising one with many starters and rookies to the varsity scene looking strong in preseason. They just never molded into the football machine ev- eryone expected. Injuries hindered the Tigers greatly this year in their quest for Big Ten superiority. Knee injuries were the main ones to befall our gridders, either straining or tearing ligaments. If injuries weren't enough the Ti- gers seemed to be jinxed in the fourth quarter, probably the most memorable game for Hastings was the heartbreaking loss in the final minutes to eventual State Champion .c Lincoln Southeast. Hastings had things well in hand until the final ten minutes when in a seven minute span Southeast scored three times to overtake Hastings and claim the contest. Queenis Night had to be the most heartbreaking loss of the year for the Tigers as they led Lincoln Northeast at times by as much as seventeen points, but the Tiger de- fense couldnlt hold back the potent Rocket attack, but neither could the Lincoln team stop Hastings' offense, So in the end it was a battle between offenses with Northeast coming up victor in a hard fought game, 31-29. The Tigers also won all of their games in fourth quarter surges against Kearney and Norfolk, Scott Christensen came out the hero of the Kearney game as he kicked the winning field goal in the final sec- onds for Hasting's first win of the season. The Tiger team was the hero My Q . of the Norfolk game as they all came through in the final quarter when Norfolk had a commanding lead of 14-0 and Hastings came back to win 16-14 with fine defen- sive play and outstanding offensive line play to move the ball down the field for the winning touchdowns. The most disappointing perfor- mance by the Tigers' this year had to have been the game in which they played Grand Island. The offense looked like they were trying to march through one foot of mud for a whole half until in the second half they got on some dry ground and began moving. The usually staunch Tiger defense could not contain the explosive Islander offense as they scored at will against them. The fi- nal score was a disappointment, but not the spirit which carried the Ti- gers through their disappointing season leaving next year's Seniors something to build and improve on. l A I VARSITY FOOTBALL: Left To Right - G. Their 13-8 record, their winning effort at District, and trip to State drew recognition as a tremendous team effort. Starting out the season beating Lincoln High, one highly-rated team be- fore the season started and one of the State finalists, people knew that Hastings was back again to make a run for Big Ten Honors, Trans-Nebraska, and the chase for State Champion. Coach Larry Ribble molded together one of the finest teams that Hastings has put on the court. The main obstacle the Tigers confronted this year had to have been Grand Island. The Tigers met up with the Islanders three times this year and lost all of the confron- tations. Hastings was led all year by the slick floor leader, Senior Rick Rader an the rebounding strength of Senior forward Steve Theesen. Both players made All East Big Ten along with Junior Zac Lowe. Rader and Theesen also made the honorable mention list for Class-A All State. The Tigers were involved in a new District this year consisting of teams from North platte, Kearney, McCook, Scottsbluff, and Alliance. The main opposition they encountered for a return trip to State was Kearney whom the Tigers had met earlier in the season and beaten in the final seconds by a pair of free throws from Rick Rader. They had Kearney down by a few points before the Bearcats fought back. The Tigers then took charge of the game and went on to win District by beating McCook for the privilege of the trip to State. Hastings was matched against Papillion in the early game at the Sports Complex to start the Class A tourna- ment. Steve Theesen and Rick Rader came up with a big game for the Tigers. However, Papillion won by ten points. The finals were played by the seventh and eighth seeded with the eighth seeded team winning the state title. 114 l Senior forward Bob Reichert shoots high over a Columbus defender. Coach Don Nelson's Junior Var- sity squad made up for their lack in heighth by their hard work and de- sire to win. The long practices and hard scrimmages molded a fast but deliberate offense which proved to score a lot of points. Brad Osborne was the team lead- er on the floor as he led the potent offense in scoring and play making. Bret Johnson, Jeff Steinke, Robb Woodward, and Sherm Johnson made up the rest of the starting five for Coach Nelson,s team. Scott Christensen, Dean Goings, Rick Krull, Jeff Marsh, and Darryl Clinton made up the bulk of the re- serves that came off the bunch to give the starters a reak and show what they could do. The experience gained this year will help the varsity team to another trip to State next year. Bret Johnson goes up for the opening tip-off against Lincoln East at the final home game Forward Scott Harris goes through the Islanders for the layup as Mike Hinrichs looks on. Coach Congrove's squad started the season slowly, losing their first four games before getting on the right track and ended the season with a 6-6 record. After winning their first game they dropped their next before catching fire and winning five out of their last six games. Scott Harris was the team leader as he led in his defensive skills and he was the leading rebounder. Monte Engebritson and Jeff Kister helped the sophomore Cubs to their .500 season. Players who saw considerable ac- tion were Shane Surface, Shawn Mullen, Rod Rader, Mike Bohlen, Steve Willy, Ray Brown, and Mike Hinrichs. Many of the pictures shown in the newspaper during the year and in this yearbook were made possible by the Photo Staff. They worked long hours in the darkroom and took time out to capture the year in pictures. The movie theme portrayed in this year's yearbook took many class periods and extra time by the staff in order to have it before school started. The partnership of the two editors, Cathy Norman and Rick Minnick, supervized the staff mem- bers making sure they did their work. The Tiger Cub, made up of 13 members, produced 15 issues of the bi-monthly paper during the school year. Receiving this years' Out- standing Staff Member award was Curt Clowe. Thanks to the efforts of these three staffs the 76-77 school year was informative and entertain- ing. ni While Brent Robinson supports Garland, the rest of the crew prepares him for his debut on the newspaper staff. 137 Debate Team Argues Their Way to Victory The 1976-77 Debaters put a lot of hard work into their season, improv- ing with each meet. Which season is your favorite - Winter, Spring, Summer or Fall? If you came to the 1977 Flamingo show you would have enjoyed them all. A Song For Every Season, was the theme for this year,s Fla- mingo show with many delightful acts to fit each season. Winter', was expressed with the snow escapades of four junior snow- men and four seniors who made the audience visualize an Aspen winter. Sophomores and Juniors showered the crowd with Spring raindrops. With acts like Pieces of April and Raindrops Keep Fall- ing on My Head, an aroma of Spring had to be present in the air. Summer days brought crazy ways and lots of clowning around. The routine was created by Senior Soloist Lauri McElhinney. Lauri, selected by her fellow Flamingo's portrayed a tired clown out for his Morning Swim. With all the effects of Fall the Seniors took everyone on a Mid- night Express through the seas of autumn. These were just a few of the highlights of the '77 show. Supervising Flamingos was Mrs. Carol Lewis, sponsor, and Preciding over the group was Sue Riggins, President, Holly Mudd, Vice-Presi- dentg and Bev Reichert, Secretary- Treasurer. In order for the Flamingo show to be presented they have two money making projects a year. A pie sale early in the year and another project near the close of the school year. Their spirited efforts helped to pull xt the Flaminl Babies' Senior girls through a victory. Miss Irwin was 7 pleased with the turnout of girls wanting to participate, and the en- ff thusiasm of everyone. This year's Intramural Leagues were dominated by the National League teams as the teams in that League tore each other apart to see who could play the victor of the American League. The final game of the year in the National League between the team captained by Mike Harris and the eventual league champs, the Home- growns, was the climax of a hard fought season for the National League teams, as the Little Franks waltzed to the American League Championship. The final game was anticlimatic to most as the Homegrowns rolled over the Franks with ease cutting off their fast break attack and counter- ing back with their own attack to win in the final game of the 76-77 Intramural Season. The theme of this year's Junior-Senior prom was Young at Heart . Enter- ing the front doors the couples walked across a wooden bridge with a stream flowing underneath. The walls leading into the gym were cov- ered with streamers and tin foil and large tissue flowers. In the gymnasi- um there was a poem dedicating the prom to the senior class of 1977. In the center was a mirrored ball with different colors of lights reflecting. Streamers went from this center to the various corners of the gym. Un- der this was a wishing well where many stopped to make a wish. On one side there was a swing in each corner and park benches between. The refreshment table was made to look like a child's lemonade stand. This year's colors were yellow, or- ange and green. Serving as student chairman was Junior Representative Barbara Hurt.
