So it was with us when we, the staff, chose Hiawatha as the theme of the year book. There is probably not one of you who has not heard of Hiawatha, the primitive folk-hero, a kind of Prometheus, Beo- wulf, and Menabozo all in one. He was the teacher and defender of his peopleg he had human and super-human attributes, he knew medicine, magic, and all the se- crets of nature. He talked with the birds and beasts as with his friend. Especially have we chosen Hiawatha for our theme because of his nobleness and high ideals, which make'him an outstanding figure in literature. He came to his- people to supplant love for hate. He loved honor, and punished fraud severely. He loved, and was loved by all in return. He represented the ideal Indian man- hood, which we can also take as our model. The four classes: Seniors, Juniors, Sophomores and Freshmen, depict the four stages of Hiawatl1a's life. We have him as the mature warrior, as a youth, as a small child, and as a baby. For the rest of the book we selected lines from the ' Song of Hiawatha , which we thought were well suited to the various divisions. It is our hope that you enjoy the theme. .-18.-
