ERWIN NATHANIELT GRISWOLD Dean and Langdell Professor of Law Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, in 1904, Dean Griswold received both an A.B. and an A.M. degree from Oberlin College in 1925. At Harvard Law School he compiled one of the highest averages ever attained and served as President of the Law Review. He was graduated in 1928 and was awarded an S.j.D. in 1929. After practicing in Cleveland, Dean Gris- wold served as an attorney in the Cihce of the Solicitor General of the United States and as Special Assistant to the Attorney General from 1929 until 1934 when he was .1 appointed to the Harvard Law School Fac- ulty, becoming Dean in 1946. Dean Griswold teaches Federal Taxation and has taught Trusts, Conflict of Laws and Administrative Law. He is highly recognized in these Helds, having written two editions of Spendthrift Trusts and various articles. He compiled Cases on Federal Taxation and co-edited Cases on Conflict of Laws. In 1942 he was consulting expert to the Treasury Department and he has been an adviser to the Restatements of Trusts, Restitution, and Judgments. Puyw f'If'1wr1

A native son, President Conant was born in Dorchester in 1893. He specialized in chemistry at Harvard College, graduating in three years with high honors in 1913. Receiving his Ph.D. in 1916, he served as Instructor in Chemistry until 1917. During World War I he worked With the govern- ment, and later was commissioned a Major in the Chemical Warfare Service. Returning to Harvard in 1919 as an Assistant Professor, he became an Associate Professor in 1925, a Professor in 1927, and in 1929 Sheldon Emery Professor of Organic Chemistry. In June, 1933, he was elected President of Harvard University. War serv- ice called him again in 1940 and until 1946 he was Chairman of the National Defense Research Committee. He became a member of the General Ad- visory Committee to the United States Atomic Energy Commission in 1946. Among President Conantis other honors, he is an honorary fellow of Emmanuel Col- lege, Cambridge, a member of the Amerign Chemical Society, the American Academy of Sciences, the Massachusetts Historical So- ciety, the American Philosophical Society, and the Royal Society of Edinburgh and England. He is one of the World's outstand- ing authorities on education, and has Written many books on the subject including On Understanding Science, Education in a Di- vided World, and Science and Common Sense.

Zechariah Hluzfee, fr. UNIVERSITY PROFESSOR Professor Chafee came to the faculty of the Harvard Law School in 1916 after three years of practice in Providence, and became Langdell Professor in 1938. His studies have been chiefly in the fields of Equity and Negotiable Instruments, but his writings reflect his varied interests. Free Speech in the United States, Gov- ernment and Mass Communications, Weathering the Panic of '73, State House vs. Penthouse: Legal Problems of the R. I. Race Track Row, and others including the recently published Some Problems of Equity. In 1936 he drafted the Federal Interpleader Act and was in 1947 and 1948 a member of the United Nations Sub-commission on Information and Freedom of the Press. This year he is teaching Unfair Competition and Equitable Remedies. In addition Professor Chafee is giving two courses in Arts and Sciences: Fundamental Human Rights and Legal Protection of Literature and Art. Born: 1885 in Providence, Rhode Island. LIVINGSTON HALL Vice-Dean and Professor of Law Upon his graduation from the Law School, Professor Hall entered private practice in New York City and in 1931 was chosen to serve as Assistant United States Attorney for the southern district of New York. He returned to the Law School in 1932 and was appointed Vice-Dean in 1939. During the war years he served as regional attorney for the O.P.A. in the Boston Area, and later with the Army Air Force in the Southwest Pacinc. His published writings include numerous contributions to legal periodicals and a case book on criminal law co-edited with Pro- fessor Glueck. This year he is teaching Agency and Criminal Law. Page twelve RALPH JACKSON BAKER Weld Professor of Law Professor Baker began teaching Law as an Assistant Professor at the University of Pennsylvania in 1911. From 1914 to 1932 he practiced law in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, leaving there to join the Harvard Law School faculty. He was an adviser to the American Law Institute's Restatements of Trusts and of Restitution, and has been an adviser in the drafting of the part on Investment and Instruments of the Com- mercial Code prepared by the Institute and the Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. He has edited with Professor Dodd, Cases on Business Association. This year he is teaching Corporations II and Trusts. Born: 1888 in Octoraro, Pennsylvania.
