DAVID EIDE WATTS Assistant Professor of Law Professor Watts entered the army in 1942, and after a brief initial period in anti-aircraft artillery, served with military intelligence until 1946. Following graduate study at Columbia, and prior to joining the Harvard Law School Faculty in 1949, he caught at the law schools of the Universities of Iowa and Pennsylvania. He teaches Property. Born: 1921 at Fairfield, Iowa. A.B., 1941, J.D., 1942, University of Iowa. KENNETH CULP DAVIS Visiting Professor of Law Professor Davis began the practice of law in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1934, and except for interruption for government service has been a teacher of law since 193 5. He has been professor of law at West Virginia University, the University of Colorado, and the University of Cali- fornia. In 1939-40, as a member of the Attorney General's Committee on Administrative Procedure, he investigated various federal agencies and wrote monographs. He is the author of a dozen or more articles in legal and other periodicals in the field of constitutional law and admin- istrative law. ' This year he has been teaching Administrative Law. Born: 1908 in Missouri. A.B., 1931, Whitman College, LLB., 1934, Harvard. Page twenty-eight CALVERT MAGRUDER Lecturer on Law After serving as secretary to Mr. Justice Brandeis for the 1916-17 term, Professor Magruder joined the Army as an Infantry Lieutenant. Later he returned to Washington as attorney for the United States Shipping Board. In 1920 he became an Assistant Professor in the Law School, and in 1925, Professor. He was on leave of absence in 1934-35 serving as general counsel of the N.L.R.B., and again in 1938-39, serving as general counsel of the Wage and Hour Division, United 'States Department of Labor. In 1939 he was appointed to the United States Circuit Court of Appeals for the First Circuit, and since 1942 he has served as a judge of the United States Emergency Court of Appeals. Professor Magruder is co-editor of Crane and Magruder, Cases on Law of Partnership. He is teaching a course in Torts. Born: 1893 in Annapolis, Maryland. WILLIAM EDWARD MCCURDY Professor of Law After graduation from Harvard Professor McCurdy was secretary to Mr. Justice Brandeis in 1922-23. He has been on the Law School faculty since 1923, and has also taught at the University of Wisconsin, Cornell, North Carolina and Texas. He is a member of the American Law Institute's Groups for Rrsiatvmrnts of Contracts, Restitution, and Torts. In 1945-46 Professor McCurdy was Special Adviser to the Director of the Legal Division, U.S. Group C.C. Qlater Ofhce of Military Gov- ernment fU.S.j for Germanyj and Chief of the Legislation Drafting Section. From 1947-49 he was successively Chief of the Legal Advice Branch, Associate Director and Acting Director of the Legal Division, OMGUS. He is the editor of Cases on Persons and Domesiic Relations and Cases on Sales fwith Professor Willistonj. Professor McCurdy is now teaching Contracts. Born: 1893 in Augusta, Georgia. HAROLD JOSEPH BERMAN Assistant Professor of Law After receiving his B.A. from Dartmouth in 1938, Professor Berman studied for a year at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He then went to Yale, where he received his M.A. in 1942. From 1942-45 he served overseas with Signal Intelligence, and during that time learned Russian. He received his LL.B. from Yale in 1947 and was then appointed Assistant Professor of Law at the Stanford Law School. For 1948-49 he was appointed Associate Professor and given leave of absence to teach at Harvard. He is the author of numerous articles on Soviet Law in various law reviews. In addition to teaching Comparative Historical Method and Soviet and American Law in the Law School, he teaches a course and a seminar on Soviet State and Law in the School of Arts and Sciences under the auspices of the Committee on International and Regional Studies, and is active as a research associate with the Russian Research Center. Born: 1918 B.A., 1938, Dartmouth, M.A., 1942, LL.B., 1947, Yale. ARTHUR T von MEI-IREN Assistant Professor of Law After graduation from the Law School, Professor von Mehren was for a year secretary to the Honorable Calvert Magruder, Judge of the United States Court of Appeals. In 1946 he was appointed Assistant Professor of Law and sent abroad to study the continental systems of law, studying at the University of Zurich, 1946-47, and the University of Paris, 1948-49. He took a leave of absence in 1947-48 to serve with the Legal Division of the Occupation Military Government QU.S.j in Germany. Professor von Mehren is now teaching An Introduction to the Civil Law Systems, and a seminar on the French Legal System. Born: 1922 in Albert Lea, Minnesota. LOUIS BRUNO SOHN Lecturer on Law Mr. Sohn has served as research assistant to Judge Hudson of the Permanent Court of International Justice since 1941. He was the secretary of the Legal Subcommittee on Atomic Energy for the year 1946. At present he is editing the department on the Development of International Law in the American Bar Association Journal. In 1948 he served as a consultant to the Legal Department of the United Nations Secretariat. 1941 Mr. Sohn was Winner of the Addison-Brown Prize for an essay dealing with Interstate Torts. He is the author of numerous articles in legal journals, and this year is teaching World Organization. Born: 1914 in Lwow, Poland. LL M Di l Sc M 1935, John Casimir University, Lwow, Poland, . ., p. . ., LL.M., 1940, Harvard. GEORGE MINKIN Assistant Dean HARRISON STEELE DIMMITT Secretary of the Law School After graduation from the Law School, Mr. Dimmitt was for five years engaged in the practice of law in New York City. In 1935 he was appointed assistant secretary of the Law School and the following year became secretary. He entered the Army in 1942 and was discharged as a Lieutenant- Colonel in February, 1946. He was attached to the staff of General Devers' Sixth Army as a G-5 officer and later served with the United States Group Control Council in Berlin. Born: 1898 in Denver, Colorado. A.B., 1920, Princetong LL.B., 1925, Harvard. Mr. Minkin was born in 1920 in New Bedford, Massachusetts. He received his A.B. degree from Harvard in 1941. In that year he entered Harvard Law School, and after an interim of service in the Army, received his LLB. in 1947 and his LL.M. in 1948. In 1947 he was appointed Faculty Assistant in Charge of Ames Competition. In 1948 he was appointed Assistant Dean. Page twenty-nine
